PARK JIMIN WAS UTTERLY EXHAUSTED, in every way possible.
his exams had taken his brain, blown a hole through it, and then fucked the hole, and his sleeping schedule had been violently beaten up in an abandoned warehouse by the one thing every student dreaded: revision. so when he finally returned to his apartment on the last exam day, after working two hours at a café, he collapsed onto the sofa.
jimin let a long, drawn out groan escape his plump lips, staring at his ceiling with weary eyes, smiling weakly when his cat, a small calico named noodle, jumped into his lap, meowing and padding at his stomach with soft paws. she curled up on his chest, and although jimin just wanted to stay on the couch and decompose forever, he needed to shower, and desperately.
his shower only lasted around ten minutes, and he definitely felt less close to dying once he stepped out. he dried off his orange hair and glanced at the inscription on his wrist, like he always seemed to do after a shower. a small tattoo, not one he got willingly, one he gained when he was five, as result of the stupid soulmate concept his society revolved around. any two people could be soulmates, if their tattoos a) matched or b) completed the others.
jimin's wrist had a simple yet infuriating sentence: "i am in". every time it was on display, jimin found himself staring hopelessly at his wrist, praying for an explanation to pop out of thin air. it was why he wore long sleeves to exams and tests, so he'd never get distracted by the neat black hangul on his skin.
it was unfair, jimin thought, as he dressed himself. his best friends, hoseok and namjoon, had easily found their soulmates; namjoon and his boyfriend yoongi - yeah, namjoon being gay was a shocker to everyone - both had a kendrick lamar lyric on their collarbone, while hoseok and jin had a half each of a disney quote from mulan, their favourite movie. all while jimin was stuck with this goddamn "i am in". what could it be?
" maybe it's 'i am in your heart'?" namjoon suggested as the group slaved over math revision in the local mcdonalds, a pile of fries in the middle of the table. jin shook his head, and hoseok mumbled a 'nah', writing down the correct answer to a question.
"doesn't make sense. it's gotta make sense," the eldest muttered, writing down an algebraic formula and grabbing a handful of fries. "maybe "i am in love"?"
"too sappy," yoongi shook his head, mint strands of hair shaking into his face.
"look, yoongs, just because your soulmate tattoo says "sit down, lil bitch, be humble" doesn't mean that other people's ones can't be sappy!"
jimin shook his head at the thought of his friends stupid suggestions, heading to his kitchen and grabbing some leftover takeaway from the fridge. he settled himself on the sofa, noodle sat beside him, and turned on the tv, letting some k-drama he'd never watched before play.
"it's easy for you, noodle," jimin sighed, scratching the cat's belly. "you don't have to deal with fugging soulmate tattoos. although, maybe i should get you a friend. just so you don't lonely when i'm at school," the cat purred as if in agreement. jimin nodded. "right, that's sorted. i'll get you a friend tomorrow. but first, i'm gonna binge watch this until i figure out what the fuck is gonna on."

JIMIN'S SATURDAYS were days of peace, days where he'd lie in and drag himself out of bed at a good hour. now that exams were over, he had the whole weekend off, and man was he looking forward to it. he and the boys had made some plans for sunday, but jimin had his own intentions for his saturday. saturday after exams was a decided 'treat yoself' day; jimin had had it planned since before exams started.
he woke up at half past nine, feeling like he'd actually gotten enough sleep, and then went to make himself a breakfast for the gods; eggs, bacon, toast, pineapple juice, and blueberry waffles topped with cream. he ate all of it, downed a cup of coffee, fed noodle, and then went to his bathroom, for what jimin liked to call "park jimin's spa-from-home experience". soft lo-fi beats played from jimin's speaker as he stripped down to his underwear, slid on a black silk robe and sat on the edge of his bathtub, ready to begin his pampering regime.
a facemask was applied, legs were shaved, nails were clipped and carefully painted in the softest shade of peach, eyebrows were shaped to perfection, feet were soaked and dead skin was removed. jimin removed every blackhead on his nose, every unwanted hair on his chin and upper lip, and he exfoliated and hydrated his skin until it was baby soft. noodle came and rubbed herself up against his shaved legs, loving the smooth feeling, and he smiled lovingly.
"hey baby," he cooed, picking her up and cuddling her like a parent cuddles a child. "i'm gonna go get you a girlfriend from the pet store today, yes i am! you're not gonna be all alone anymore!"
noodle purred like an engine, licking at jimin's apricot facemask flavoured skin, making the boy giggle. "ah, noodle, did i even need that face scrub? your tongue could remove my dead skin for less money!"
jimin laughed sweetly and placed noodle back down, beginning to tidy up his beauty products. the pet shop would be open by now, so jimin went to get dressed, choosing a simple and stylish outfit. stonewashed black skinny jeans, a pink sweater with 'babe in trouble' written in bold across the front, and a leather jacket to top it all off. noodle miaowed at him as he laced up his vans, and he smiled sympathetically.
"hey, you know i'd bring you along babygirl, but you hate when i put you on a lead, and i can't just let you loose." he scratched noodle's chin with a smile, before leaving his apartment.
jimin's earbuds played a playlist of pretty chill music, ranging from day6 to lil uzi vert, and he felt pretty content as he walked down the streets of the city. he felt well pampered, smelling faintly of his apricot facemask and his honey and coconut shampoo, and well relaxed, relieved now that he didn't have to revise anymore. he turned a corner and saw ms chwe's pet menagerie, the exact place where he was heading.
"hey jimin!" hansol, ms chwe's son and new owner of the store, greeted jimin as soon as he walked in. "how's noodle?"
jimin had purchased noodle from the pet shop two years ago, when she was just a kitten, and he still remembered the very first time he held her. he grinned at hansol.
"hey hansol! she's fine, i've actually popped in to get her a friend," he explained. hansol nodded.
"well, you know where the kitty counter is! hope you find a cat you like."
jimin nodded thankfully, going down a few aisles of pet food and supplies before he found where all the cats were. there were around ten adults, split into males and females, in a spacious glass walled enclosure, while the kittens were in a big crate, there being only seven of them. jimin cooed at a small ginger kitten, scratching his head with a fingernail and laughing fondly as he yawned. but he couldn't adopt a kitten; noodle was too old for that. he needed an older female cat, so he could be sure she and noodle would get along.
the female cats were beautiful, elegant; there was one grey, with bright blue eyes, and two tabbies, one shades of orange and the other greys and browns, and the remaining two were white, one with black splotches and one without. jimin stroked all of them, loving the attention he was getting; cats had to be his favourite animal, and he would've had twenty of them if he could.
"cute." jimin heard a foreign voice say, and he looked up quickly, taking his attention away from the cats.
a boy had come out of the kitty corner supply closet, a soft smile on his face. he was taller than jimin, with brown hair, that had green highlights in the fringe area, and he had the most amazing chestnut eyes. he wore a baggy crimson top with white english writing across the chest, and black jeans, with startlingly bright blue doc martens. he was undeniably attractive, especially with that smile on his face.
"sorry?" jimin asked, a polite smile on his face as a cat headbutted his palm.
"the cats. they're cute," the boy replied, smiling still. "and so are you."
jimin felt his cheeks heat a little, looking at the cats as to avoid eye contact. the white one seemed to be the one who liked him the most, licking at his fingers and purring as jimin stroked her head.
"thanks, i guess," jimin replied to the boy, who walked over to the enclosure and sat crosslegged, barely two metres away from jimin. "you work for hansol?"
"yep. started last week," the boy replied, carefully picking up the grey cat and placing her in his lap. she settled down easily, purring as he stroked her. "the cats love me."
"i can tell," jimin laughed. "what're their names? i really wanna get a new cat, but i like to know names before i adopt."
"well, this pretty lady here is duchess," the boy smiled at the grey cat in his lap. "our grey tabby is thunder, her orange sister is solar. your lovely white one is ying, and the splotchy one is lady."
jimin smiled; he loved cats with quirky names. "and can i know their pretty best friend's name?" he joked, glancing up at the pretty boy, who was grinning. his grin was nice; his mouth turned seemingly rectangular, and his eyes sparkled.
"i'm kim taehyung," he smiled, reaching a hand out for jimin to shake. "can i know your name? i've been referring to you as 'cat boy' in my head for the last five minutes."
jimin laughed. "i'm park jimin. nice to meet you," he was stroking ying with two hands now, having taking a liking to her. "i think i've found the lady i wanna take home."
"ah, lucky ying!" taehyung beamed, placing duchess back into the enclosure and standing up. "well, i'll get you a box for her, mr. park. will you need any food, or toys or anything?"
"i need to pick up cat food anyway, but could you fit her with a flea collar?" jimin asked, standing up. taehyung nodded.
"consider it done." he disappeared into the supplies closet, and came back out with his sleeves rolled up, carrying a cat box. jimin noticed a tattoo on his wrist, and managed to read it while taehyung opened up the box.
taehyung's tattoo was as simple as jimin's: "i am complete". the ink was still black, meaning he hadn't found his soulmate, otherwise it would've turned blue. jimin felt intrigued, and conversed with the boy as he gently loaded ying into the box.
"hey, what do you think your soulmate tattoo means?"
taehyung shrugged. "i have no clue, honestly. my best friend wonho's is so simple, it's one half of a freaking friendship bracelet, and he's been in love with his friend hyungwon for years! whereas mine is just "i am complete"! like what the fuck? what's yours?"
jimin rolled up his sleeve, about to read it out, when he choked on air and wasn't able to speak.
the ink had turned blue.
he glanced at taehyung, whose expression hadn't changed. the ink was blue! the only person who could be his soulmate was either hansol (unlikely, considering he was straight and already had a soulmate), or taehyung.
"t-the ink's blue," jimin stuttered out. "i-i... check your tattoo."
taehyung looked at his and went pale, showing jimin his wrist. the words "i am complete" were now written in the same azure colour as jimin's tattoo, and both boys stared at each other.
"w-what does yours say?" taehyung asked. jimin showed him, and he nodded.
""i am in" and "i am complete". i am incomplete," taehyung chuckled, shaking his head. "fancy that. well... shall i deliver ying to yours, take the day off and consider that a date?"
jimin thought it over, and, honestly, it didn't sound like a bad idea at all. "that sounds amazing."
