Stage fright is a very common feeling everyone has had at least once in their life, even the most confident of people can get stage fright. Whether it was before a presentation or during a performance, it haunts everyone's nightmares. That sudden tight feeling in your chest as you become aware of all the judging eyes staring directly at you was bone chilling. Not to mention the racing of your increasing pulse as all your confidence and self esteem began to run a marathon when you need it most. The trembling of your knees, the clamminess of your hand, that sinking and uneasy rock in your stomach was all too much for one nervous person to bear.
But stage fright was nothing to be ashamed of because everyone became overly anxious about something at one point in their life. That's what Jeongin kept telling himself though, to make himself feel better about his constant nervousness and crippling phobia of failure. He couldn't help but feel this way all of the time when he was surrounded by a... very peculiar group of people, all with many unique and beneficial talents that made him seem a lot smaller than he actually was.
Don't get him wrong, he loved all the people he was associated with very much. However, it gets very difficult when they're very formidable and dangerous people who he simply struggles to match paces with more often than not. And don't even get Jeongin started on how much they coddle him on a daily basis either! Being the youngest out of eight people wasn't as much fun as it sounded, trust him on that.
The sound of footsteps rapidly approaching the boy him off guard for a moment though, light like a rabbit's foot as they attempted to sneak up behind him. Jeongin glanced over his shoulder to try and catch the culprit, his eyes darting around the hallway he stood in quickly to try and find them. Yet all he saw behind him was the long corridor he had been walking through, the marble covered flooring, and the red carpet on top seemingly untouched by any sort of presence.
The walls of the corridor weren't suspicious either, simply untouched yet expensively painting of foreign locations and people who weren't important to the modern day. Jeongin cocked his head like a dog as he turned around completely, taking one last survey of the room as he tried to figure out where the quick footed steps had come from. It seemed to have appeared at one moment and then disappeared the next. Suspicious and disturbing to say the least, Jeongin didn't exactly know what to think next.
"Too slow!" A chirpy voice exclaimed, their tone almost singsong-like as Jeongin felt a pair of arms wrap around his neck tightly. The boy yelped in shock as their arms got a good grasp of his neck, pulling him down to the floor by shifting all of their weight into one side of their body. Despite the initial panic that had arisen in his psyche, he could tell that there was no malicious intent behind the culprit who had tried to manhandle him. Their grasp was tight but still loose enough for Jeongin to breathe without any trouble, not to mention the rather bubbly aura they radiated at the same time. "Honestly Jeongin, are you always going to have your guard down? It's so easy to sneak up on you."
"You're trained to be quiet and sneaky and you're my friend," Jeongin complained, wrestling with the older boy in an attempt to escape his grasp. The boy fought back against it with an annoying smile on his face, his smile almost blinding Jeongin as he continued, "It's kinda hard to not have my guard down around you!"
"That's no fun!" The boy argued, achieving his attempts to thwart Jeongin's escape and trapping him into a friendly headlock. He playful ruffled up the boy's carefully styled hair, shoving black bangs into his eyes and ruining the more "adult" look he was going for. "You're the one who said not to go so easy on you all of the time when training. That means I get to take my chance at messing with you at every hour of the day. To help you train, of course," He explained, quickly added the end part.
Jeongin frowned, still struggling to free himself from the boy's grasp. "Helping me train and nearly giving me a heart attack," He began, threatening to bite his hand. The older boy let out a squeal of surprise, successfully terrorizing him into freeing Jeongin. He smiled triumphantly as he began running his hands through his hair, trying to salve the mature vibe that had been ruined. "Isn't the same thing, Hyunjin! You just like bullying people!"
"Why would you say such a thing?" The older boy gasped, placing his hand over his head dramatically as if he was going to fall at any given moment. "I don't bully people, do you think my absolute adoration and love for you is bullying?"
"Yes." Jeongin quickly responded, his tone rather dead and matter of fact.
"Ouch, who decided to add spice to your sugar?" Hyunjin mumbled in response, pouting at the boy's attitude. He wasn't expecting an answer from him as he spun around on the heel of his shoes, beginning to make his way down the hallway like a playful child. "Oh, I forgot, the whole reason I came over here is that Jisung and Changbin did what they needed to do, so it's free range for us from here on out as long as we follow the task given to us."
"Alright decoy infiltrator," Jeongin mocked, taking a moment to glance down towards the boy's clothing of choice. The two were dressed rather similar to each other, both wearing their own suit and tie to match the ambiance of the building they were currently in. Though Hyunjin looked specifically more dangerous than him, but not in the harmful and menacing type of way. It was meant to entice those who spared a glance towards him, leading them into a sense of intriguing security for Hyunjin to take advantage of. "Go do your job."
Hyunjin laughed, grabbing the hands of the younger boy and dragging him along so they could pick up the pace. "You're here for a reason, you realize that? You're under Minho's watch and lead for this operation, so in a sense, you're going to be coming with me."
"Minho?" Jeongin complained, groaning as Hyunjin forced him to follow through the corridor and towards the main hall. As they approached the sound of flittering chattering began to echo through the hallways, signally that the main hall was more likely than not filled to the brim with people inside. While that was good for them to easily blend into a crowd they don't belong in, it was also a huge disadvantage on their part as well. "Every time I'm supposed to be watched by Minho he doesn't pay attention to me, he's too busy being bothered with literally everything else instead."
Jeongin was a spy, a special agent if you would, and the youngest of eight of them that were currently present in the building. He had been specifically handpicked as an aspiring trainee to fill a role in his agency's special agent unit, to work together in harmony and create a bond so strong not even death could stop them. It was an honor to be a part of a unit like the one he was in now and Jeongin couldn't have picked a better group of people to begin that journey with. However, he wasn't exactly at the beginning of his journey.
For two years he's been in this unit and he's watched his peers grow into fully fledged and formidable special agents for their agency. It's been two years and Jeongin still was being constantly monitored, tested, and trained because he struggled to keep up with the unit he was placed in. Sure, he had been brought on countless missions and operations but only to shadow them and watch. He couldn't partake in the missions because he wasn't "experienced" enough to partake in the true action without getting direct orders from who he was shadowing or his leader.
It was embarrassing to watch the action from afar, to be so close to the real operation but forced to sit out because he may cause the mission to be compromised. And all just because he didn't have as great of an aim like Minho? Because he wasn't proficient in technology like Changbin or Jisung? Because he wasn't silvered tongued and quick witted like Hyunjin? Jeongin was average at all of those things, maybe a bit below average in some areas, but average nonetheless! He thought he could be useful without the constant eyes watching his back to make sure he didn't trip and fumble by accident.
"Oh come on, it's not that hard shadowing Minho. When I was under Minho's watch he had always made sure I was with him," Hyunjin insisted.
"That's because you had anger issues and were trigger happy before you had become a full fledged agent!" Jeongin hissed, frowning at Hyunjin's attempts to console him. "Minho had to watch over you or you'd literally compromise a whole mission just because someone looked at you funny! If anything, he was at the peak of his abilities making sure you don't turn into the enemy."
Hyunjin could only smile sheepishly at his words because Jeongin wasn't all that wrong. As the unit's residential surveillance specialist, it was Minho's job to follow and observe people. Usually, his abilities pertained to those who were identified to be the enemy, but it was also very helpful when watching over unit members who couldn't defend themselves very well. Though in Hyunjin's case it helped to keep the boy in check at all times.
Hyunjin stopped in his tracks once they reached the middle of the crowd, perfectly blended in with the atmosphere around them. "Listen, we can't really deal with this right now okay? It's not like it's your first time shadowing Minho, so can you just suck it up and deal with it one more time?" He whispered, trying not to attract any attention to their conversation.
"But, Hyunjin—" Jeongin whined, the older boy quickly intervened once again.
"We have to focus right now, but once we get back to the agency we can talk about switching who you're shadowing... okay?" Hyunjin proposed, trying to appeal to Jeongin's needs. He didn't even get a chance to respond to suggestions though, as Hyunjin simply ruffled his hair one more time before turning on his heel and disappearing into the crowd.
Jeongin watched him go, his shoulders drooping in frustration as he lost sight of the older boy. He didn't even know where Minho was, how was he supposed to shadow a person he couldn't see?
"I hate this job," He mumbles to himself, turning around like a spinning top as he tried to find anyone he knew. Yet the room was so big and the crowd was so large, filled to the brim with people he didn't know, that it was a little difficult to spot any of his unit members. All the men in the room wore nearly identical suits to the one that the unit was wearing as well on top of his worries, so Jeongin was stuck, to say the least. "I really hate this job."
Knowing Minho, he was probably off doing something more than watching over Jeongin. They were on a mission right now and his skills were much needed for the task that had been given to them.
A powerful corporate executive by the name of Shin Daehyun was present in the building with a walking target in his back. From what Jeongin had overheard from their leader, he was a very dangerous man. He knew a lot more information than he let on and did a lot of dirty work behind the mask that his company provided. The unit's agency had finally been able to pinpoint his current location which sent them deep into the heart of Seoul and into a banquet with people who had as much, if not more, power as Shin Daehyun.
Unbeknownst to the man in question, however, he was being tailed by seven people who had the intention of taking him down. Seven excluding Jeongin— of course— because he wasn't allowed to take part in apprehending the corporate executive. Knowing Minho's large skill set and what he specialized in, he was probably right on Shin Daehyun heels which were a place that Jeongin couldn't go.
"If you really hated this job you wouldn't be walking around trying to find Minho," a very familiar voice spoke, their voice just below a mumble with static like noise following their statement. Jeongin winced at the screeching sound, plugging his ears in an attempt to drown out the noise as laughing followed right after it. "Nice try, Jeongin! I'm with you forever, you can't get rid of me that easily!"
"I can if I take this stupid earpiece out," He whispered, recovering from the fumble and beginning to follow the crowd. Jeongin tried to slip back into his disguise, walking in the same direction as one large group seemed to be going and blending in with them almost seamlessly. As long as he made it look as though he was talking to someone in the crowd, no one would suspect him of anything. "If Minho was just going to be doing something important for this mission, why did I have to shadow him?"
"Because Bang Chan noticed how much you liked to be out in the open," the voice responded. "It may not seem like it, but he watches over you a lot and tries to make you feel as included as possible. That's why you're out there with the rest of the group and not in the CCTV control room with me. I mean, would you rather want to be up close and see the action for yourself or be stuck behind a screen watching?"
Jeongin huffed, putting his hands behind his back as he began to survey the room for any of the members again. "You know either I'd rather be in the action than being in the audience at all, Changbin." He grumbled.
"We can't have everything in life, can we?" He responded, making Jeongin roll his eyes at the statement. "You see those stairs leading up to the second floor on the side of the wall? Last time I saw Minho on the surveillance cameras he was heading in that direction after talking with Bang Chan. I think they said they were going to corner the target from the rest of the crowd."
"Who else is there?" Jeongin asked as he began to make his way towards the stairs, slipping in through the small gaps between people and murdering an empty apology as he passed by. "Is it just them?"
"I believe Felix was heading in the same direction as well," Changbin confirmed after a few moments of silence, probably from searching the various screens that gave him a view of the entire building. "Hyunjin and Seungmin are together on the floor you're currently on, gathering as much information on the target as they can get. It's best not to disturb them while they're going what they do best in person, so I'll let them know that you're going to be following after the others upstairs."
"Wow, so useful," Jeongin teased, a wide dimpled smile appearing on his face as he did. Changbin complained in response, but the boy had completely tuned him out despite the boy being right in his ear. His eyes were focused solely on the stairs to the upper floor, trying to scan the area for their target or a member of their unit. His smile grew even larger when he caught the sight of blond hair quickly bobbing and weaving through the crowd, heading the same direction he was in just being a little faster than him. "Felix," He mumbled to himself, picking up the pace to try to catch up with the older unit agent.
"Excuse me, young man!" A feminine voice called, though quite shrill on the ears. Jeongin pivoted around after being called, a frustrated expression contorting onto his face as he turned towards who had interrupted him. At a large round table covered in a white silk cloth was a group of women, much older than him in appearance, all staring at him expectantly. One of them was holding an empty wine glass and smiled at him as she held out her glass to him, tucking a strand of her behind her ears as she spoke. "I don't mean to be a bother, but can I refill? I had a Chardonnay."
Jeongin blinked his eyes in bewilderment, frozen by her odd request as he stuttered out, "Oh... uh, I'm so sorry but I don't work here. I'm a guest," He explained, gesturing towards the formal attire he was in.
The woman nodded her head in response, placing the wine glass on the table as her original wide smile dropped into a half smile. "I was simply just trying to grab your attention that's all. You see, my colleagues and I couldn't help but notice you and that other handsome young man walking into the room earlier," She explained, mentioning Hyunjin's quick appearance and then disappearance from earlier.
"Kim Dojin," Changbin spoke through the earpiece, he must have quickly looked up her profile once he had noticed Jeongin had stopped moving. "Age, thirty-seven. Occupation, secretary of Moon Hyunwoo. Hyunwoo is a shareholder in the target's company, so this woman is a potential danger to you." All Changbin needed to do was stop at her age and Jeongin would have gotten the clue that he was in potential danger.
"I'm really sorry ma'am," Jeongin quickly interjected, trying to end the conversation as quickly as he possibly could. "But I'm in a slight hurry right now, I can't really sit and chat with anyone."
The woman's smile fell completely as if she was disappointed by the answer he had given her. "That's a shame, truly," She commented, turning to the other women who were sitting at the table with her. They all nodded their heads in agreement in unison with each other as the secretary turned back to Jeongin. "However if you could just spare a moment, that would be perfect. My colleagues would love to get to know you and your friend a little more, there's just something so intriguing about you too, I'd like to know more, maybe have a drink or two?"
"Uh oh," Changbin blurted, immediately recognizing the severity of the situation. "This is a code red Jeongin, you gotta get out there. This isn't some harmless conversation she's trying to have."
"I'm sorry ma'am, but I'm a minor," Jeongin continued, trying to ward the woman off from him. "As much as I love to stay and chat, I can't and don't really want to drink. My apologies, sincerely."
"That's never stopped me before," The woman pressed on, trying her best to persuade him over. "Come on, it can't hurt to try new things."
Jeongin froze in place, unable to think of any sort of rebuttal to save him from the sinking ship that was this situation. All he could do is blink his eyes in dumbfounded shock, opening and closing his mouth constantly as he struggled to form any sort of words in his mouth. The woman in front of him laughed, watching him struggle in amusement. "Is that a yes then?"
"Both Bang Chan and Hyunjin are on their way," Changbin explained, trying to send him help as quickly as he could. "Hyunjin is on the opposite side of the room and Chan is upstairs so it might take him so time to—"
"Secretary Kim!" A rough, masculine voice greeted, loud, and booming over the noisy crowd. "It's so nice to see that you could have made it, Moon had told me you were debating on not coming as his plus one." A few heads turned towards Jeongin, their eyes glancing at who was behind him rather than the boy himself. The woman's expression flickered from annoyance to delight as she stood up out of her chair, stepping away from Jeongin and greeting the person behind him.
"Mr. Shin, it is lovely to see you again. How long has it been? A couple of months maybe since we've last been in the same room together?" The woman exclaimed as Jeongin turned around, his eyes finally laying on the man behind him.
The man towered over Jeongin like a grand oak tree, casting this incredibly large shadow that he didn't even believe was possible. His skin was rather pale and wrinkled from age, a few skin blemishes dotting his face here and there. His hair was slicked back with a few hairs that refused to lay down but simply adding to the unruly and dangerous aura that surrounded him, not to mention the velvet red suit he wore was a stark contrast to the black and white attire of the rest of the men in the room.
"Shin Daehyun," Changbin clarified, a slight tone of dread in his voice. "Why the hell is Shin Daehyun here? I thought I saw him on the second floor, Bang Chan had even said he spotted him up there..."
The target turned their head towards Jeongin, giving the boy a curious glance before smiling at him. Though there was something about the man's smile that felt sickening, making the boy's stomach twist and turn with distrust, which did make sense. After all, Shin Daehyun was his mission's target for a reason. "I see you've found yourself a new plaything, Secretary Kim. Though your choices are," He stopped, looking Jeongin up and down, "Questionable. Tell me, young man, what's your name?"
"I... Y... Yang." He answered, using his last name as a last minute answer. Jeongin didn't have time to make a fake name to keep his identity hidden, he was face to face with a man who could kill him if he ever so desired! He didn't have time to think straight.
"Yang..." the target repeated, breathing in his name like it was the air itself. After a few moments of lifting the name linger in the air, he smiled down at Jeongin again, holding his hand out to the boy to shake. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Yang. Tell me, are you the son of another executive here? I mean, that's the only way I'd believe someone as young as you would find their way into this banquet as I thought I made this... an adult-only space."
Jeongin shrugged in response, a nervous smile donning his face as he replied. "Of... course. You know how fathers are! With wanting their sons to... inherit the.... the family business and everything. Coming here would give me... more experience in the business world?" Where in the world was Changbin as his backup? He was struggling to find the right words to fool Shin Daehyun, and by the widening smile from the target, he wasn't doing the greatest job.
"I understand completely, don't worry. I remember when my father passed down the company down to me. It's a very frightening and hard job when you're so young and free," He reminisced, placing a hand on Jeongin's shoulder as if to console him in his fake responsibilities. "Come, Yang. I will personally tell you all I know about running such a company, knowledge from those who are older and have more experience in you will come in hand for the future."
"But Shin—" the woman began, shock sparking against her features as she tried to intervene.
"Not now, Secretary Kim," the man ignored, his grip on Jeongin's shoulder getting even tighter as the seconds passed. "The boy has a lifetime of challenges ahead of him, he must be properly prepared for the life of an executive chief. Now come, Yang, let us go somewhere quiet so that we may discuss together."
Jeongin shook his head vigorously, trying to decline the man's offer as fast as he could. He didn't know what the target would do if he was alone with him and the boy had a feeling that he didn't just want to give him advice on how to run a company as a young entrepreneur. "I really don't think that is necessary. I'm actually kinda in a rush right now trying to find my... my father so I think it's best if I go back with him."
"No need to worry!" The target explained, turning his head towards the crowd of people around them. "Your father can come along even. Now where is he, I'd love to meet the father of such a fine young man."
"Hey Jeongin," Changbin suddenly echoed in his ears. "Duck."
"Duck?" he repeated.
"Duck!" Jeongin dropped to the ground, covering his head to protect himself from whatever dangers were threatening his life. A loud gunshot echoed through the room, causing pure chaos to break out as everyone screamed in panic and terror. The guests scattered about the room in an attempt to escape, trying to find a place to hide before a shoot out suddenly happened. Without missing a beat, however, Shin Daehyun grabbed Jeongin by the wrist, forcing him up on his legs and giving him a malicious glare.
"Oh no," Jeongin mumbled, being forced to look Shin Daehyun in the eyes.
The man's lips began to spread into an arrogant smirk as he took a hold of the boy's shirt collar, his grip so tight that he might turn his knuckles white. "So Yang, did you still want to have that talk?"
"Ow... ow! Seungmin that hurts!" Jeongin whimpered, jerking his body away from the boy's hands. The operation with Shin Daehyun didn't end so well for him, seeing as he was practically unharmed when the target had malicious approached. The boy needing saving after being taken hostage by the man used as a weapon against the first of the unit, and flung around like a doll. Though Hyunjin and Bang Chan had sprung to the boy's rescue, he did end up suffering a few wounds from the skirmish.
They weren't severe wounds at least, nothing that made the unit flock to him like an injured dog. He just had a sprained ankle, a busted lip, and a knife scar on his throat covered up by a bandaid; don't forget the several bruises that dotted his face and back. While Jeongin didn't think these injuries were all that important or serious, Bang Chan still had appointed Seungmin to look after him in the infirmary. He was the only one on the mission who didn't have direct contact with their target at all, so it felt best to have him watch over Jeongin while they were gone.
The rest of the unit went to talk to their boss and the drafter of their previous mission. Due to the events that had transpired while they were at the banquet they had run into some... complications with the target. Complications that their boss wasn't too happy about, one of those things being Jeongin used against them in a hostage situation. So Jeongin was forced to sit back and wait for the rest of the unit to return, left picking and peeling at the hello kitty bandaid on his neck, and swung his foot off of the side of the infirmary bed as his eyes were glued to the door.
Seungmin sat beside him on the bed, holding a cold compress to his ankle as he peered towards the other fresh bruises that were scattered about his body. "How is it that in every mission you go on, your wounds seem to increase?" He questioned, curiously reaching his hand out towards the boy's busted lip. Jeongin instinctively jerked away from him but stopped in mid-movement when he felt his ankle twitch and ache in sudden pain. "I mean, for your first few missions when shadowing everyone you came out perfectly unscathed. And now it seems like you're constantly moving up the severity scale."
"It wasn't my fault!" He complained, trying to defend himself as he laid his head down on the infirmary bed. "I was supposed to shadow Minho and he was almost nowhere to be found. He wasn't even searching for me! He was supposed to be my form of self defense since someone didn't want me handling a weapon of my own."
"Hey," Seungmin scowled. "You're the one who has terrible aim. It wouldn't be so hard to believe if while you were on that mission you would have shot yourself on the foot."
"Jeez, can you have some faith in me? Besides Hyunjin and Minho have been taking me out to the shooting range to practice my aim and I've gotten significantly better from when I first started!" Jeongin remembered the first time he picked up a pistol as a trainee, determined to show off that he was just as capable as the other trainees who were eager to be placed in units or become solo agents. Though the boy wasn't the malicious type and nearly shot their instructor with a bullet, it didn't make it any better that the kickback nearly sent him flying backward as well.
It was embarrassing, to say the least, but Bang Chan seemed to find his determination quite enduring. Next, he knew he was training with a group of seven to become the agency's next special agent unit.
"We're back!" Felix's voice exclaimed as the door to Jeongin's temporary room flung open, revealing the relieved yet anxious looking unit members on the other side. "The good news is the drafter isn't mad at us so in turn, the boss isn't mad at us either!"
"That's great!" Seungmin replied, a smile donning his face as he turned towards the rest of the members. If the drafter of their operation weren't mad at the results, then the boss had no choice but to be okay with it as well. That man was always a suck up to the clients that would come in ask to create a contract with the agency since they paid a hefty sum of money to get their jobs done. "And the bad news?"
"The boss is mad at us," Jisung shrugged, grabbing the cold compress that was placed on Jeongin's ankle and putting it on his head; falling into the infirmary bed without a second question. He pushed Jeongin to the other side of the small bed, forcing the boy to share the space with him whether he liked it or not.
"What do you mean he's mad?" Jeongin questioned, snatching the cold compress away from Jisung with a scowl. "You just said he wasn't?"
Bang Chan pulled up a chair from one side of the room, falling into it with a heavy thud and distressed sigh. "The drafter wasn't mad at us for not completing the operation, he was a lot more sympathetic with us when he had realized how young we were and what had happened during the operation. So he ended up striking an agreement to pass the contract along to one of the older groups with more experience. So that makes this—"
"—unit mission number ninety-nine that has failed," Hyunjin finished dejectedly, pouring his lips at no one in particular. While the group of boys was rather talented in their own ways, they weren't the smartest group of people together. The unit struggled to complete missions given to them because either something would happen to Jeongin and he became their top priority, or their teamwork for that day wasn't as good as it could have been.
Every mission given to them was a test to prove their worth as a special agent unit for the agency and nearly every time they failed to bring anything to the table. More often than not, their boss would split them up into small groups of duos and trips to try and put them to use while they could. Those tended to be more successful than their unit missions when they paired with the right members to work in unison.
"With our current win-loss ratio, it's a high possibility that the boss will break up the unit as a whole," Bang Chan commented, his facial features contorting into one of worry and frustration. The entire unit broke out in protest, all trying to counteract their leader's claims of the possible future. "I mean, I'm just being realistic! We've got ninety-nine mission failures, if we mess up one more time as a group who knows what the boss will do? He's got all the proof he needs that we work better one day than the current way we do now."
"Then... we go on another mission," Jeongin suggested, though getting skeptical looks from those around. "And we don't retreat until we complete it correctly and get another win against our current loses."
"Easier said than done," Changbin chimed in, leaning up against the backrest of Bang Chan's chair. "It's most likely that we won't be sent on another unit mission for a while like we've been sorta... temporarily banned from doing so. Plus, when we were in the boss's office he had specifically stated that he had a couple of trio and duo missions for us to complete in that stead."
"For now, let's just sit back and relax," Chan advised. "Take this time to heal from wounds of the Shin Daehyun operation and train yourselves for the next unit mission the boss hands us. The next time we go on a mission, we have to bring all of our skills together and attempt to complete it to the best of our abilities. But for now, let's just... take this time to reflect. Okay?" The leader's words were followed by a collective dejected nod of agreement, the members of the unit unwillingly complying with their leader's words and taking this time to heal. Or in Jeongin's case, begin to start using the brain in his head.
