CHAPTER ONE
••••••••••••••••••
To say that teachers these days are overworked and underpaid would be a gross underestimation in my current situation.
"What do you mean you refuse the job?"
Looking at the Master of the school with the most disbelieving expression I could muster. "I already have two jobs at this school and you want me to pick up a third one? I'm a goddess not a miracle worker."
"Eurydice, I understand you already have a lot on your plate, but you are the best choice for the job." Rhian said calmly, still attempting to coerce me into accepting.
"Rhian, I am The Reaper of Souls, The Guardian of Innocents, The Keeper of The Balance, and I teach The Journey of Life here at Ever, as well as The Voyage of Death at Never. I have so many responsibilities that it would drive an average mortal to insanity.
The notion of even considering to take the job of doing your job but without any of the pay, is absolutely ridiculous. Ask Clarissa, I'm sure she'd be more than honored for another opportunity to lick your boots." I retorted with an eyeroll.
"Now if you'd excused me, I have students to see." Having finished with the conversation, I quickly made my way out of the tower and down the invisible steps.
As I entered the main hall, I caught sight of one of the only other people in Ever who don't buy into the bullshit.
"You look like your about to sick a Hellhound on someone." Professor Marcus Hood commented with a small chuckle. "What happened?"
"Rhian wants me to take on another job on top of everything else." I grumbled, not bothering to mask my frown.
"Which job, Flower Power? Head Groundskeeper?" He joked, trying to lighten the mood.
"Assistant School Master, he wants me to do his job so he can screw around more than he already does."
"Oh shit..." Marcus muttered with wide eyes, grasping how insane it was.
"Mhm, I refused." I informed, my brown eyes scanning each of the students, as we awaited for Dovey and Lesso to make their grand entrances. "I don't have the time or the patience to take on another job."
"I imagine Rhian was disappointed?"
"I didn't give him much of a chance to show it." I responded with a shrug. "I left before he could get another word out."
"Pity, I would have loved to see him pout about it." The Professor of Magical Histories joked with a wide grin.
"I suppose we should stop gossiping now, Professor Hood." I changed the subject, hearing the familiar footfalls of my associates.
"And why is that, Professor Skiá?"
"Because I can hear Dovey and Lesso approaching." I quipped, pointing to the doorway, just as the two deans entered the room.
"How do you do that?" Marcus chuckled in disbelief, gesturing between myself and the entrance I had just predicted.
"Deity hearing." I replied, pointing to my ears. "It's out of this world."
"Was that a pun? Did the Heiress of the Underworld just make a pun?"
"Yes, I did. Now shut up and pay attention, before we get chewed out for being bad influences again." I muttered, as I saw Dovey eyeing us with disapproval.
With the conversation brought to an end, we watched as the boys did their beginning of term showcase. Halfway through, young Tedros made his ever so dramatic entrance.
Having known the boy since he was an infant, I can say that he definitely gets his urge to show off from his father.
Arthur had tried to get me to train the young prince, only to find that my methods were a bit harsher than the boy needed. However, a surprising friendship was formed between myself, the king, and his adviser Merlin.
At one point a cyclops boy from Never stood and started to fight Tedros, much to the faculty's amusement. Once Tedros started to use Excalibur against the Never boy, I lit his battle axe with hellfire to even the odds. Lesso laughed with an approving smirk, while Dovey glared my way.
"I'm the Keeper of the Balance, dears." I chuckled towards the Dean of Ever. "It's in my job description to ensure a fair fight."
"That it is!" Lesso cackled, as the fight continued.
Unfortunately, the poor cyclops boy lost a hand by his own axe, causing me to wince at the sight.
As usual, Dovey gloated and Lesso verbally lashed out. I shook my head and made my way towards the Never.
"This will hurt a bit, so just focus on your breathing." I told the young cyclops before healing him. The Never let out grunts of pain as I used my magic to slowly regrow the hand, leaving but a few scars.
"Why are you helping me?" He asked curiously, as I pulled him to his feet.
"Let's just say that being the daughter of the god of death, has a tendency to give someone a bleeding heart." I joked, helping the Never boy back to his seat and ignoring the stares of the new students.
"Thank you, Professor Skiá." Rhian acknowledged as I made my way back to my place beside Marcus. "Our new students will need all of their appendages to make it to graduation."
I simply nodded, before tuning out the rest of his speech. Up until the Readers stood up and both exclaimed.
"But what if we got dropped in the wrong school?!" The Blonde Reader shouted from her side with the Nevers.
"Or there's been a mistake and we have to go home immediately?!" The Reader with the gorgeous curls added on.
I raised an intrigued brow, awaiting Rhian's response as everyone went silent.
"There are no mistakes in the School for Good and Evil! So....have a nice semester." Was all that was said before he dramatically and quickly made an exit.
Rolling my lavender eyes at the typical bullshit response that was given to the girls in an attempt to save face.
This was going to be interesting.
