"but I'm only human
and I bleed when i fall down
I'm only human
and I crash and I break down..."
"She had inhaled a lot of water. Thankfully the paramedics resuscitated her successfully. She should wake up any minute now."
"Thank you so much, doctor."
"We're going to have to run some blood tests too. Are you aware of her abusing drugs? Or alcohol?"
"No- No. I've known her since forever. She's never done drugs. And she's not a heavy drinker."
"Okay. We'll check, just in case... You know, miss Celine, this type of bathtub incidents are common among the suicidal individuals. Is there any chance-"
"No. No way. She'd never do something like that, doctor, I assure you of that."
The bright fluorescent light from the hospital lamps burned painfully through my retinas, making tiny white spots appear before my eyes. I tried sitting up, but the rupturing pain in my head cut sharply through me, causing a low grunt to escape my mouth.
"Y/N!" I saw Celine's form almost leap towards me, grasping the bed's backrest. "Don't push yourself too much." She warned me, putting her small palm on my shoulder.
A young tall man stood beside her, dressed in a long white coat, a black stethoscope on his neck. He had dark brown hair and round glasses that gave him a very authoritative and important look. I started wondering how could such a young person be a doctor. He looked like he had just graduated.
"Hello, miss Y/N." He greeted me calmly. "My name is Dr. Jackson Wang. May I ask how you are feeling?"
I tried to give him a smile but literally all the muscles in my body felt too weak to move.
"My head hurts a little bit." I replied. "But other than that I'm fine."
"Okay, we'll get you something for the pain immediately." He reassured me, the tone of his voice calm and comforting. "Do you know why you're here?"
I felt Celine's intense and worried eyes pinned to my face.
I pinched my nose, trying hard to gather all my memories. What happened? I remember someone screaming. And then I couldn't breathe. That was all.
"It's okay if you don't." The doctor says, obviously having noticed my struggle.
"I'm sorry, I really can't." I offered him an apologetic glance, feeling guilty. Celine cleared her throat.
"Y/N, me and Jimin found you in the bathtub." Her features hardened as she pushed her lips into a thin line. "Unconscious." I felt my friend shiver as she pronounced that last word.
Her eyes glistened with tears but she shook her head.
I frown at her words, having absolutely no idea what she was talking about. In the bathtub? I never take baths. I prefer long showers.
"I really don't remember that." I mutter, getting more and more confused with every second.
"Excuse me for interrupting." The doctor politely joins in the conversation, fixating me with his eyes. "Miss Y/N, have you ever had episodes that you have no memory of?"
I gulp loudly as my hands unwittingly grab the hospital bed sheets.
"Actually, yes." I admit quietly. "I used to sleepwalk when I was a child."
The doctor nods understandingly, sucking on his teeth sharply.
"Yes, that is common among children and young people with restless minds." He explained slowly, glancing both and me and Celine, whose eyes had widened at my confession. "This condition exacerbates intensely when the individual is under a lot of stress. Have you been feeling slightly overwhelmed recently, miss Y/N?"
Well, to say that I was slightly overwhelmed would be the understatement of the century.
I bop my head into a nod.
"Yes, you could say so." I replied darkly.
The doctor smiled softly, playing with the pen in his hand.
"Okay then. To me, it looks like this was an unfortunate episode of sleepwalking. We'll prescribe you some pills for that, but the essential is that you don't stress out as much anymore, Y/N. Because to be honest, you were lucky that your friends were there to save you tonight." He pointed towards Celine with his chin. She grabbed me by the hand, squeezing a little bit too hard.
"Now excuse me as I go take care of my other patients. Have a good rest now, we'll talk again later." The doctor excused himself, quickly exiting the room.
"You dummy! Why didn't you tell me you were sleepwalking?" Celine hisses at me the moment the door closes, digging her nails into my forearm.
"Damn it, Celine!" I yank off my arm, flinching from the pain. "I'm in a hospital, for fuck's sake. Take it easy."
"Do you know I almost had a heart attack?" Celine's eyes start watering once again, this time she lets out the tears make their way towards her cheeks. "You freaked me out!"
"I'm so sorry." I mumbled under my breath. "I thought it had passed. The doctors said I'd grow out of it. It hasn't happened in a while." I shudder at the memory of my last sleepwalking episode where I was lucky that Jungkook was there to stop me from going out in the night.
"You really don't remember anything?" She asks, inhaling deeply. I shake my head.
"Nothing at all. I remember coming home exhausted and crashing on my bed still in my clothes." I blurted out, sparing her the details of my visit to Hoseok. "I must have fallen asleep and...." My voice disappeared towards the end of my sentence.
Celine put her hair behind her ears, lowering her gaze nervously.
"Uh, by the way, don't freak out, but there's something you should know." She leaned towards me, lowering her voice. "Taehyung's here."
A quiet gasp leaves my lips as I straighten myself up in the hospital bed.
"Taehyung? What is he doing here?" I whisper-yelled at her.
"He called Jimin and he told him what had happened." Celine let out an exasperated sigh.
"Well," I clench my jaw, "why didn't you stop him?"
"Oh, what was I supposed to do?" She whisper-yelled back at me, rolling her eyes. "Excuse me, Y/N, but I was too busy freaking out that you might actually die!"
"You have a point." I muttered wryly.
"Besides, the poor boy's been here for almost five hours. I felt so sorry for him, I couldn't possibly tell him to leave." Celine pursed her lips, crossing her arms in front of her chest. "He's been genuinely worried, asking the doctor whether you'd be alright every 20 minutes."
My heart ached at the thought of Taehyung and how I had behaved towards him during our last conversation. I buried my face in my palms out of embarrassment.
And to think that he had come here after that, almost made me cry. I felt like such an idiot.
There I was, getting overwhelmed again.
"Should I tell him to come in?" Celine suggested, shrugging her shoulders. "He'll ask me about you when I go out. He most probably already knows that you're awake."
"Okay." I groan with a tormented look on my face, wondering how I would look Taehyung in the eyes.
Celine disappears somewhere behind the door for a couple of seconds and the next moment Taehyung shows up at the doorway, his face pale and worried, his hands clutching on a small teddy bear.
He steps towards the hospital bed very cautiously as if he was afraid that I'd explode and tell him to leave again. That only made my heart break even more.
"Hey." He softly says. "How are you feeling?
"I'm okay, thank you." I give him a weak smile, then look at the teddy bear in his hands. "Is this for me?"
He looks down upon the plushie as if he has forgotten that he's carrying it.
"Ah, yes." He hands it to me and I take it in my lap, squeezing it tightly.
"I love it." I grin, glancing towards him. He sits on the other side of the bed with somewhat of a relieved look on his face.
An awkward silence fills the room as we both stare at the ground, unable to think of what to say.
"What happened?" Taehyung utters at last, tapping with his long slender fingers on the side of his thigh.
"I'm a sleepwalker." I explain, trying to maintain the tone of my voice as nonchalant as possible, as if it isn't a big deal. "Turns out I decided to take a bath while sleeping."
"I had no idea." Taehyung raises his eyebrows, surprised. "Jimin told me he and Celine found you unconscious in the bathtub." His whole body shudders at those last words. "Maybe me coming here was a mistake. But I just had to know that you're okay."
His big orbs stare right into my soul, making all my defenses go down.
"I am." I offer him a reassuring look. "I swear I didn't try to kill myself, as opposed to what the doctors might think." I try to brush off the last words and make them sound as light as possible, giving him a faint smile.
"I never thought you did." Taehyung smiles back at me. I can't help but notice how tormented he looks, probably from standing in a hospital hall for several hours, waiting for me to wake up.
His face features were darker, making his already wide eyes look even more prominent.
A feeling of guilt starts crawling in the back of my mind, enhancing the already intense headache I was having.
"Look, Taehyung, about before," I puff my cheeks, exhaling loudly. "I think I owe you an apology. I was so rude to you, you didn't deserve to be treated like this. I feel like a complete idiot." I blurt out the words out of my breath. "You- you've been so nice to me. And I-"
Taehyung cuts me off, placing his warm palm lightly on my thigh.
"We can do this later. For now, all that matters is that you're okay." He whispers and all my instincts tell me to touch his hand back, to hug him, to throw myself into his embrace and let him hold me.
Instead, I stay as still as a statue.
"Mhmm." I hum quietly, my voice trapped in my throat.
"There's something you could do for me, though." Taehyung grins widely, lightening the mood in the melancholic hospital room.
"What?" I raise my eyebrows, glancing at him questioningly.
"Let me drive you home tonight. I heard the doctor say they can let you go if your test results are okay." His eyes linger on me, offering me a pleading look.
My gut ties in a knot, realizing that after everything that has happened, Taehyung still wanted to take care of me.
"Okay." I agree, pursing my lips together. Taehyung stares at me under his eyelashes, his sharp expression softens after hearing my reply. "Yes, you can drive me home."
