part 1: the unforgettable reunion

jeon youngha is incredibly stupid. as she stares at the size of her car, she comes to the realization that perhaps she isn't the brightest tool in the shed a little too late to save herself from the ridicule she was sure to experience soon enough.

"you thought you were really going to be able to fit six people in your car with suitcases when your car is the size of a mini cooper?" claire yoon, one of claire's best friends and resident mother figure says with her hands on her hips.

"in my defense, i forgot that jay and jake study abroad," youngha says, pouting as she examines the size once more. "and don't knock my car; she's fit the six of us before."

"first of all, forgetting that jay studies abroad is understandable to some extent, since he's always here for every break he gets. but jake only comes back for the summer so how did you forget about that one? not to mention the fact that your car is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but we only fit the six of us in there because last time, our parents brought all of our luggage." youngha has nothing to say to claire's logic so she just pouts as she tries to come up with a solution. the two of them were on gimpo airport duty (picking up jay and jake) since the other two members of their group were already in seoul and still getting ready, which meant that it was really far too late for them to try and figure out and logistics now.

"i still can't believe that they're letting us stay in the pohang house by ourselves for the entire summer," youngha sighs dreamily, already conjuring up visions of herself laying on the beach and spending time with the locals of pohang that their families had gotten close to over the years of vacationing there.

"what i can't believe is that they all booked a trip to europe without us! for the whole summer!" claire harrumphs, folding her arms over her chest. youngha looks over at her with a silly smile, shaking her head.

"can you blame them? they're probably sick and tired of us for staying and living at home even when we're all grown up and going to college," youngha says with a twinkle in her eye, checking her watch to make sure that they weren't missing jake and jay's arrival.

"we're korean," claire deadpans. "they'll be living with us even when we have our own kids."

"it's the thought that counts," youngha says with a laugh. the pair of them start to make their way from where they had parked to inside the airport to receive jake and jay, discussing all of the plans they had made while waiting for the summer throughout the school year.

a refreshing gust of cool air swept youngha's hair back as she stepped into gimpo airport. no matter how many times she came to this airport (a total of maybe twenty times, since jay always preferred that youngha picked him up - as if she never had anything better to do) (she usually didn't), it always amazed her to see just how big and grand it was.

korea had seen hardships in its past and seeing progress in places that youngha had forgotten progress could be seen always made her throat jump with a proud smile.

"did you check the schedule to see when the flight from australia is landing? the american flight landed ten minutes ago," youngha says, furrowing her eyebrows as she checks the time that she had haphazardly scribbled onto her hand when jay called her to make sure she didn't forget to pick the two of them up.

"yeah, jake told me that the flight was supposed to land...twenty minutes ago," claire says, checking the memo she had left on her phone.

"well, that means that jay probably still has about ten minutes before he makes it out here but jake should already be here by now," youngha says, scanning the growing crowd of people around them. she's about to pull out her phone to call him to check where he was when claire lets out a blood curdling scream next to her, causing her to drop her phone in panic.

"OH MY GOD!" claire screams and it's clear from the shock on jake's face that he didn't intend for his surprise to be so...surprising. "YOU CAN'T JUST SNEAK UP ON PEOPLE LIKE THAT ASSHOLE!"

the older people around the three of them give claire a nasty look to which youngha smiles apologetically and bows to them, mouthing that it was a reunion after a long time for whoever was staring a little too long.

"yo, chill out, claire bear. i was just messing with you!" jake says, but his ears are red hot with shame - and it's obvious to anyone with eyes that he feels bad.

claire huffs, blowing her hair out of her face. "don't call me claire bear if you're going to give me a heart attack."

youngha rolls her eyes as she checks her phone once again to see where jay was, only to realize that her phone was no longer in her pocket.

"looking for this?" says a voice behind her. youngha turns excitedly to see jay holding her phone in one hand, duffel bag slung over his other shoulder.

"jay park! took you long enough," youngha says, accepting her phone and then punching him in the shoulder. jay winces and pretends to keel over in pain, to which jake laughs at and high-fives jay.

"glad to see the girls are still the girls," jay says, lopsided smile on his face. claire and youngha exchange a look before crossing their arms over their chests and harrumphing.

"we drive all the way out here to pick you guys up and this is the thanks we get?" claire says haughtily, with her nose turned upwards.

"you're so right," youngha harrumphs, linking arms with claire. "let's leave these losers right here!"

the two of them are about to march away dramatically when jake taps claire on the shoulder, sticking out two cadbury chocolate bars as redemption.

"come on, what if i pay you guys for your service?" he says slyly, and jay joins in, offering a half-empty bottle of sprite as well.

"you guys drive a hard bargain," youngha says, grabbing a cadbury bar. "next stop, sunghoon's house!"

"really? it only takes you a singular chocolate bar to sell out?" claire says, but she grabs the other chocolate bar anyway, making jay and jake laugh.

"whatever. call kang seoyeon and tell her that i'm on my way to sunghoon's and now she's not allowed to bring more than two duffel bags because we don't have enough space," youngha quips, the four of them making their way to her car.

"you think that kang seoyeon, miss 'i'm going to create the next chanel' is only going to bring two bags to pohang?" jake says incredulously. "that's like asking jay not to bring his guitar! or asking sunghoon not to bring three different travel perfumes to go across down!"

"yeah, i think that they get the point, jake," jay says, slinging his arm around jake's shoulder, wrapping it so that his hand was covering his mouth.

"anyway, we all have clothes there so i don't know why everyone's making a big deal about not having enough space in the car for their bags because technically, none of us really need bags," youngha reminds them. the four of them stop dead in their tracks to reexamine the trunk once youngha pops it open, which was already about halfway full because of the random things youngha had in their as well as the duffel bags that youngha and claire had stuffed in there.

"we're going to have to take sunghoon's car," jake and jay say in unison.

"damn it."

the reason why youngha usually hated having sunghoon drive was the fact that park sunghoon liked to keep his car at subzero temperatures at all times. it was like the man didn't believe in summer or heat or anything other than temperatures that didn't support life.

sunghoon also never played the pop songs that the girls liked listening to either - it was always some hip hop or old elvis song that he would play on loop until jake or jay tries to throw him out of his own car.

and above all, youngha and sunghoon were polar opposites. even though their parents were actually the pair of best friends that started this whole 2nd generation friend group thing in the first place, youngha and sunghoon couldn't more different. they got along well enough, especially in front of their parents, but at the core, they were very different people - or at least, the same difference between a golden retriever and a black cat.

youngha loved summer - she loved surfing, getting tan, staying on the beach until she became one with it, tropical smoothies, light colors, and generally being a ray of sunshine. sunghoon loved winter - he was an ice skater, loved dark colors, the cold, speaking very little, having a snarky sense of humor, and generally loved tormenting youngha.

example one was right now, as youngha sat in the passenger seat of sunghoon's car, glaring at him through the corner of her eye as she was shivering from the air conditioning being fully turned up.

"sunghoon, can't you turn down the air conditioning, just by like two degrees?" youngha says, clasping her hands and shaking them in front of him. sunghoon waves her off with a childish grin.

"just focus on the directions, youngha, and you won't even feel the cold. the exit is coming up soon and i don't want to miss it," sunghoon says cattily and youngha has never wanted to smack someone in the face more in her life.

that was false, actually. she did smack seoyeon in the face once when the six of them had gotten drunk for the first time - but that was only because she kept insisting that roo'ra was better than h.o.t and anyone with a pair of ears knew that h.o.t was better.

"oh i hate you," youngha growls and she slumps back in the seat, shaking the map in front of her to block sunghoon from her line of sight.

"if you guys are done flirting up there, how much longer until pohang?" claire asks, yelping when youngha reaches back to smack her on the thigh.

"we're not flirting!"

"yeah, and jay's not going to fall asleep the second we arrive instead of sleeping in the car, now. anyone else have a stupid statement to add?" jake says, rolling his eyes sassily. he and jay are sitting all the way in the back row of sunghoon's van so youngha's unable to smack him but it's alright because jay carries out the action for her.

"you know you guys act like an old married couple, right?" seoyeon adds, looking in her compact mirror as she adjusts her lip gloss. "it would be cute if it wasn't so gross."

"for someone who really hates love, you sure are perky."

"shut up, jake. i just broke up with seojoon so i'm a little sensitive. can you blame me?"

"what happened to sehun?"

"dude, that guy was three boyfriends ago."

"i hate all of you."

a/n: and the chaos of the six begins! i'm not going to lie, i've never watched the summer i turned pretty but i'm seriously getting those vibes right. plus maybe fresh prince of bel air? we'll see!
