Part One
I narrowly dodged swiping claws, springing sideways quick as a rabbit. Two tumbling cats fell screeching in my path, forcing me to turn sharply to avoid tripping over their twisting bodies. A grey tabby spied me, leaping towards my torn and bloody back. The she-cat and I collided, falling in a snarling, spitting heap. My flailing class tore at the she-cat's ears, my teeth biting into her paw. Her deadly claws dug into my shoulders, back paws scraping my practically unprotected stomach. I screeched in familiar but still fiery pain, tufts of my dark fur being ripped away. Suddenly, the heavy weight was gone, replaced with welcoming air. As I stood, slightly disorientated, I noticed a cream tabby tom had pinned the she-cat down, slashing his claws across her belly. He raised a blood-soaked paw and I turned away. The she-cat's screeches fell silent.
"You okay?" I felt a warm breath on my shoulder. Despite my bleeding pelt and dizziness, I nodded slightly. Birchfrost swiftly pressed against me, pulling away and racing back into battle. I briefly admired his unwavering courage before finding myself against yet another injured but furious cat.
***
I had been spirited away by Redsong to have my many wounds treated, though I insisted other cats needed her help more than myself whilst silently begging StarClan to heal my pain. Redsong's soothing voice and herb poultices quickly sent me back into the fray, maroon claws freshly cleaned of fur. I sliced and slashed at rogues while running between fights, lips drawn back in a permanent snarl. While crunching my current opponent's back leg between my aching jaws, I noticed a brown tabby she-cat stumble over an outstretched body. I watch her bright eyes widen in horror as she saw the young cat lying dead beneath her. Oakwhisper gently touched her nose to Dustypaw's head, eyes closed as she murmured a goodbye to her nephew. My own eyes widened in horror as a lithe black tom crept towards the grieving she-cat, and I tried to shout out, to untangle myself from the cat I was fighting with, to warn the warrior that death was stalking her, but I was just too far away. A strangled cry left my throat seconds too late as the black tom pounced. His sharp claws tore into her neck, leaping nimbly from her body. Oakwhisper collapsed onto Dustypaw, a mess of limbs and blood.

I extended my neck forwards, front claws digging into the bulky cat whose back I was clinging like a burr too. I churned my hind paws against the cat's hindquarters, teeth meeting his throat. I felt little remorse as blood filled my mouth, salty and warm. I jumped from the body, grimacing at the taste in my mouth. Clouds moved swiftly above me, clean and white. The breeze ruffled my fur, tugging at my whiskers. I relished the feeling of freedom, the sense of happiness and hope that the wind gave me. That safe illusion was shattered with a blood-curdling cry from Sunspirit crouched over a mangled body. Not wanting to relive past deaths, I ran over to her, worry creasing my face. As I got closer, it became apparent to me why she was sobbing as the body belonged to Haysong, her brother. I panted to a stop beside her and comfortingly pressed my muzzle to her shoulder, grief weighing me down. Not just for eight moon old Dustypaw, Oakwhisper whom I could have saved or Haysong who had been savagely ripped apart, but for every cat, living and dead, and for the losses we have and will suffer. I raised my muzzle to the sky, eyes narrowed. BlizzardClan will survive, we will win against these bloodthirsty rogues. I swore by my ancestors that no more of my friends would die today as I tackled a tabby rogue to the grass, claws darting across his fur, ripping into his skin. BlizzardClan would live.
***
"We can't win this!" Birchfrost yowled to me, three rogues having trapped us against a bramble thicket. Thorns dug deeper into my pelt as leering cats drove their claws into me. Birchfrost was right. The rogues had reinforcements who came to their aid just when we thought we were winning. Another cruel trick to demoralize us- and it had worked. I nodded and, like we had practiced so many times as apprentices, charged together at our attackers. We barreled into them, racing from their fallen forms and towards where Applestar was fighting. An apprentice sized cat sprang onto my back, causing me to instantly drop on my side. I urged Birchfrost to go help Applestar and leave me to deal with the young rogue. I sprang to my paws after crushing the grey and black patched she-cat, raising a paw to strike. My harsh gaze softened as I saw her cower in fear.
"Go," I growled, " and stay away from my family." With a final glance over her shoulder, the she-cat fled.
"BlizzardClan, fall back!" I heard Applestar's commanding voice yowl. "Stop fighting!"
Cats looked around, some in shock or relief, and BlizzardClan warriors began to retreat to where Applestar stood proudly, flank bleeding from a bad wound. I padded over to join them, fangs bared in the direction of the smug-looking rogues. A rift divided the grassy battlefield, drawing a line between the two sides. A bulky black tom stepped forward from the ranks of the rogues, menacing yellow eyes narrowed. Applestar took a step forwards.
"Let us collect the bodies of those who gave their lives." Applestar stated, glaring with unconcealed hatred at the tom. The rogue purred slightly, "We have won this battle, and claimed the territory from your border to the tree line behind you. You and your cats have lost. You have no right to take the bodies, they belong to us."
His words were met with outrageous yowling and screeching from the BlizzardClan cats. Birchfrost shouldered his way to the front to stand beside Applestar, claws unsheathed.
"Those cats deserve a burial for sacrificing themselves to save others. Not even a foxheart like yourself can deny what they did. Unless you eat crowfood, you have no need for their bodies. As it is, they will attract foxes and badgers, creating problems for everyone. Will you let your pride cause suffering in your group, weakening you?"
The dark tom growled but signaled with his tail for some rogues to come forwards. He spoke softly to them, and with a nod, they began to collect the corpses. Finally, the rogues dragged all of the dead in front of Applestar, quickly leaving to stand with their own cats. I hurried forwards with many of my clanmates, reaching the body of Cloudleap, his white and grey fur clumped with drying blood. Minnowheart joined me, and together we lifted his body, the cats of BlizzardClan making a sombre procession back to camp, the victorious howls of our enemies at our backs.
Part Two
Shocked gasps woke me from my thoughts as those who had not fought saw the massacre that had occurred. Familiar pelts mingled with the injured, relieving them of their burdens. I dragged myself to the camp wall, collapsing against it in an ungainly heap. I closed my eyes, burying my muzzle in my paws and curling my tail around myself. I drifted off.
The rhythm of someone's tongue grooming my pelt awoke my from the clutches of slumber and I turned my head to see Birchfrost pressed against me, cleaning my fur. The strong scent of lavender washed over me in calming waves from his own messy pelt, and, purring slightly, I began to groom him. We relished in each other's company, enjoying the quiet before the storm.
Not long after, cats began to assemble in the middle of camp, gathering around the fallen warriors. Birchfrost and I stood up and joined them, the grief of death replacing my serene happiness and I bowed my head. Five cats lay on the ground before me, five cats whose lives were stolen. Haysong, one of the Clan's Advisors, ginger fur cleaned of blood, Nightshine, an Elite, an ear missing from her head, a brave, serious she-cat, Cloudleap, a loyal tom with a great personality, Oakwhisper, whose body lay next to Dustypaw's with her brother Duskfoot sitting between them, grieving for his sister and son, and Dustypaw himself who had so much potential to be a great warrior, they were all dead. With a defeated sigh, I settled down next to Oakwhisper's body to wait out the night.

I stumbled wearily to Brackennose's side, awaiting orders from the tabby deputy. He began to assign patrols, putting me with Pondwhisker, Sparrowbreeze and Cherrypaw on a hunting patrol. Pondwhisker took the lead, tail flicking from side to side as he walked. I followed at the back of the patrol, head down but alert to every snapping twig and rustling fern. After a while of walking in almost complete silence, Cherrypaw whispered she could see a shrew. Sparrowbreeze nodded, whispering something to her apprentice. Cherrypaw dropped into a crouch and carefully made her way to the small furry body beneath some fronds of various plants. She made the catch and carried her prey to the foot of a nearby oak, burying it quickly.
"Maybe we should split up." suggested Sparrowbreeze. "We've been out for a while and the only thing we have to show for it is the shrew."
Pondwhisker nodded somewhat reluctantly.
"You have a point," he sighed, "but the rogues are still here. We need to be careful. They'll kill us without hesitation."
At his warning words, Cherrypaw's tail dropped and her entire spirit deflated. Dustypaw was her brother, her sister being Sparkpaw. Noticing, Sparrowbreeze gently placed her tail on the young she-cat's shoulder, eyes soft. This seemed to make up Pondwhisker's mind for we stayed together and continued hunting. As sunhigh drew closer, we had caught a total of two mice, the shrew and a pigeon, and we started making the way back to camp when an unfamiliar cat tumbled out of some bushes. Dropping my prey, I sprang on the cat, unsheathed claws digging into the stranger's shoulder.
"Please! I mean no harm!" the she-cat cried out fearfully. I narrowed my eyes- too many had died for me to release my grip. Pondwhisker approached her suspiciously, his claws unsheathed as well.
"Who are you?" He asked.
The unknown she-cat swallowed before answering. "I'm Honey, I was with the Truthseekers but escaped with my kits when Rage threatened to kill them." She explained.
"Truthseekers?" Sparrowbreeze questioned harshly.
I took a step backwards, fur bristling. The white and dilute tortoiseshell climbed unsteadily to her paws, light amber eyes wide.
"That's what the rogues you're fighting call themselves." She explained hastily. "Can I please go now? I need to get my kits to safety before they find me."
This caught my attention. The she-cat, Honey, seemed desperate to get as far away as possible from the rogues but she sounded defeated. It was like she expected to be found and her only wish was to get her supposed kits somewhere safe before it happened. As I opened my jaws to ask her, three bundles of skin and bones hardly recognizable as kits ran to their mother, Honey instantly dropping her head to their level. I had seen enough. Honey was covered in scars across her face and shoulders and her kits were clearly starving.
"Come," I said kindly, "I'll take you to camp and get you and your kits something to eat. Are they old enough to eat meat yet?"
Honey looked very surprised by my change in attitude but, seemingly reassured by my warm smile, nodded her head.
"They're two moons old." She said softly, gently curling her tail around her kits, drawing them closer to her body. Pondwhisker looked at me strangely and I glared at him, daring him to challenge me.
