Prologue

*Somewhere in South America*

A fierce storm roared in rage, anger flashing, striking down the forest, rage building to create a blazing inferno. Within a battered cement building a middle-aged man with brown hair and stubble worked furiously. His hands flew over the keyboard, eyes darting quickly as he typed.

...ing almost complete. 13 days left. Received shipment. Need more Plorrons-3. Rogers missing for 4 days. Davidson ill, symptoms- heavy sweating, laboured breathing, spasms, headaches-

"Professor!"
A woman with tousled red hair and hazel eyes flew into the small room in which the man sat. The expression on her face was one of shock, horror and, incredibly worryingly, fear. Mainly fear.

"Miss Lawrence, speak!" the man spoke urgently.
"The newest test subject escaped! It was twitching uncontrollably and snarling and according to Castles it was in serious pain, then it kept charging into the door until it broke it open-"
"are you telling me it figured where the door was and broke it down when you were watching it?"
"No sir, Castles was watching it whilst getting his equipment stored safely."
"Alright, now finish telling me what happened."
"It ran out and escaped through a window-it was bolted down- and disappeared into the jungle."
"We need that back. Organize a search team and find that thing. Also, how did it get out out of a bolted window?"
"I do not know sir."
The man waved his hand in the air.
"Just worry about finding it."
"Sir, the weather will kill us if we go out there."
"You know just as well as I do that we cannot under any circumstances let our studies, experiments, escape into the world. It would cause utter chaos."
The woman paused, her freckled face showing only deep reluctance. She opened her mouth and sighed, "Very well Professor."

Somewhere within the jungle, a loud, pain-filled screech was heard.

Chapter One

In the gathering darkness in the ruined city crouched a child in the lengthening shadows. Her arms were bare, her feet were filthy, her hair was a tangled mess, her face was dirty, her clothes were torn, her ribs showed, her eyes were dull, her stomach was empty, her teeth were chipped, her throat was parched, her heart was broken, her father was dead.

Mom, Charlie, Ben, now Dad. I am alone in this world. Maybe it would be better if I joined them...

A scuffling noise made her lift her sorrow-filled gaze to where a boy was standing. He looked to be around 18 years old with neat blond hair, brown highlights, scruffy jeans and a faded black shirt. He was wearing really nice boots, dark red in colour, she noticed. She wanted boots like that. He turned his head in her direction and she couldn't help but gasp when she saw his eyes, a stormy blue colour like the ocean... like her mother's eyes. Not that she had ever seen the ocean, but her mother had described it to her often enough.

"Hello? Is anyone there?" asked the boy cautiously.
The girl ducked behind a pile of rubble in fright. She didn't like strangers, especially strangers that she was watching, finding her.
