Chapter One- Hollykit

The breeze tugged at their fur, trying to drag them away from their clanmates. Rain pelted down, splattering every cat in icy coldness. The cries of starving cats was as constant as the pounding rain. They walked in misery, blinded by wind and water, mud clinging to their pelts. A tortoiseshell queen struggled with her two tiny kits who were wailing balefully, completely sodden. One, a grey-patched tom, suddenly disappeared with his mother, leaving his sister, a brown tabby, alone in the mud. A ginger tom gently grasped her in his mouth, carrying her away.

Hollykit jolted awake, heart pounding erratically. The warm moss surrounding her in the dim light of early dawn in the nursery did nothing to comfort her. Her fur was drenched, weighing her down, and she was covered in mud up to her neck. She could still smell the rotting leaves, could still hear the desperate, hungry cries. Frogstripe noticed that she had awoken, her warm greeting turning into a horrified expression when she noticed the grime covering the black she-kit.

"Hollykit! Why are you so filthy? Did you sneak out of camp? Hollykit, you're-"

Frogstripe was interrupted by the timely arrival of Twigpool, the young Medicine Cat quickly silencing her. He stood in the nursery's entrance, his yellow eyes meeting Hollykit's blue ones.

"Hollykit, can you please explain what happened?" He asked kindly.

By now, the other kits had woken up and looked around inquisitively. Knowing that their eyes were on her, Hollykit grew hot under her shaggy fur. She ducked her head in shame, flattening her ears. Twigpool's gaze softened and, gently, he picked Hollykit up by her scruff, carrying her to the medicine den, away from the curious stares. He set her down on by the den's back wall.

"What happened?" He asked quietly, tail curled around his muddy brown paws.

Hollykit looked up at the brown tabby almost fearfully, fur slick with mud.
"I-I had a dream..." She began nervously. "There were lots of cats walking in the wind and rain and they were hungry and sad... there was lots of mud. I don't know how I got covered in the mud. It was just a dream."

Twigpool looked at her thoughtfully, whiskers twitching slightly. "In my experience, not all dreams are dreams..." He paused for a moment, as if making a decision. " I'll talk with Antstripe about it- don't worry," he said quickly, noticing the alarm spreading across her face, "you aren't in trouble."

"Let's get you cleaned up."

Hollykit exited the den into a shaft of bright sunlight, slicing through the sky like a golden claw. She blinked her eyes closed in the dazzling light, the brightness hurting her leafy eyes. The sound of rustling leaves filled her ears, as if non-existent trees were whispering secrets to each other. The sound faded along with the bright light, leaving Hollykit standing in front of the den, completely confused.

Hearing Sheepkit call her name, she bounded towards the nursery, forgetting the strangeness of the morning.

Chapter Two- Juniperkit

It was strange, he reflected, strange how the clouds contorted and merged, forming new shapes. It was strange how he could see a hunting cat, a startled rabbit and a leafy tree in the sky. It was all very strange, he thought. The way light shining through leaves created patterns, how sunshine on water sparkled, Juniperkit enjoyed these things.

What was strangest of all were the voices.

Juniperkit tilted his pure white head, his black patch covering his right amber eye. The tom sat quietly at the edge of the camp, ignorant to the game of moss-ball taking place a fox-length in front of him. Ryekit tossed the moss-ball to Hollykit who batted it swiftly to her other teammate Honeykit. The young tortoiseshell and gold she-cat's outstretched paw missed the ball by a claw, the moss thudding to the ground next to Juniperkit. He considered the object before him, black tail flicking sideways. Sheepkit raced up to him, blue eyes shining in exhilaration. Smiling, Juniperkit gently rolled the ball to him, watching as they continued their game.

Shadows of the clouds scudding by contrasted with the bright, sun-soaked ground, leaving Juniperkit a puzzle of light and dark to discover.

********************************************

The sun sank below the horizon, withdrawing its tendrils of warmth. The night was Juniperkit's favourite part of the day. A crisp Green-leaf breeze flowed through the camp, ruffling Juniperkit's fur. Cricket song filled the air. The night was cool. Far above him, stars began to appear. The wind caressed his fur, and Juniperkit closed his eyes, enjoying the feeling.

The rustling of a thousand leaves filled his hearing, the voices whispering their gentle tunes.

********************************************

Mist swirled low to the dewy grass, covering the draping ferns and bramble thickets. Countless eyes winked high above the clearing, shedding their light across the winding rivers and lush forests. Puddles lay scattered like shining tears, reflecting the half moon. A large silver pool was nestled amongst smooth pebbles and fern fronds, a quiet waterfall flowing down its side.

Emerging from a patch of bracken, a slender silver tabby appeared. Her white chest fur was covered in dew. She padded to the pool's edge, staring into its clear depths, deep in thought. Some time later, she was startled out of her thoughts by the arrival of an imposing brown tabby tom with black paws and reddish ear tips. Despite his bulk, his luminous yellow eyes held only warmth. He silently sat beside the she-cat, curling his tail over his paws. They did not speak for several minutes.

"How did you find this place?" The she-cat asked.
"I found it about two moons ago while hunting, it was completely accidental. I actually tripped over a branch and fell into this place."
The she-cat was quiet for a moment.
"Why are you here?"
A purr rumbled in the tom's throat as he answered. "I'm here because I needed to find you."
"You're just as infuriating as when you where an apprentice." She remarked.
The tom laughed, ear twitching. "Thank you, that means a lot."

Silently the two cats rose, padding into the forest.

Chapter Three- Dapplekit

"It's been a quarter moon already!" Dapplekit exclaimed. "Why can't I be an apprentice now!?" The white and tortoiseshell she-cat was pacing outside the nursery, looking irritated. Frogstripe sighed loudly, slightly annoyed at the four and a half moon old kit.
"I've told you, cats can't become apprentices until they are six moons old."
Dapplekit frowned, face creasing unhappily. Stomping a paw in anger, Dapplekit exclaimed in frustration "But I want to be an apprentice now!"
"You've said that already," Frogstripe snapped, "now go outside and leave me in peace!"
With a hurt look, Dapplekit fled from the nursery.

Honeykit and Hollykit were sharing tongues next to the den while Juniperkit scraped lines into the sandy patches of camp. Garlicpaw, white fur ruffled, was explaining the hunter's crouch to Ryekit, Sheepkit and Rainkit, who were watching him eagerly. Dapplekit growled to herself, eyes narrowed.

It's not fair! I want to be an apprentice like Garlicpaw, Goosepaw and Beepaw!

An idea began to blossom in her mind, and Dapplekit let a small purr. She had a plan. She would be an apprentice soon!

She glanced around fugitively, making sure no cat was looking in her direction. Satisfied, the tortoiseshell she-cat snuck towards the camp wall, flattened to the ground. She quickly made her way to the thorny barrier, experimentally poking a paw between some tendrils. Squealing, she swiftly retracted her paw, a shallow scratch across her forepaw. Several droplets of blood welled up from the cut, Dapplekit staring at her injury.

"Whatcha doing?" A curious voice asked.

Dapplekit leapt straight into the air with fright, fur fluffing out instinctually. She whirled around  to face her sister Honeykit, fangs bared slightly.
"You scared me! I thought you were a warrior or something!" She grumbled.
Honeykit looked at her strangely, as if comprehending the scene before her. Realization flashed in the tortoiseshell's amber eyes.
"We're you trying to sneak out of camp?" She asked in a soft voice, ears pricked warily to listen for other cats.
"Yes," Dapplekit hissed back to her, "if I can catch something big, Sedgestar will have to make me an apprentice!"
Honeykit gasped loudly, eyes wide. "But that's mouse-brained! You could get hurt!"
"You aren't coming," Dapplekit said as she lashed her tail in irritation, "so you have nothing to worry about."
Honeykit glared at her, the usually sweet and caring she-cat looking at her menacingly. Honeykit turned around and stomped off, leaving a slightly confused Dapplekit staring at the spot she had just been.

Dapplekit had gotten back to work, slowly and painfully creating a gap in the camp wall. Several cuts sliced her skin but she ignored them, determined to complete her task. With both front legs entangled with some spiky tendrils, Dapplekit was caught completely off guard when a pair of jaws closed around her scruff, pulling her away from the protective thorns. She swung around, the cat being revealed to be none other than Adderstorm, her father. He carried her to the nursery, dropping her next to a cross-looking Frogstripe. They were silent.

Adderstorm looked Dapplekit in the eye as he asked. "We're you trying to sneak out of camp?"

Dapplekit gulped.

Chapter Four was supposed to be from Honeykit's point of view but I never got around to it...
