11. muddy encounter

The rain poured down her hair, slowly freezing her entire body. She didn't mind, though, so she carried on staring up to the sky. The girl's fragile, pale face looked disturbed. She could feel their soul coming closer.

The puddles all around her reflected not the sky nor grass, but strange grey shapes and busy shoes hurrying through them. Ah, humans. As long as they would hurry and try not to die, they would never live properly. This concept had fascinated her for a very long time, back in the good old childhood days.

Her father would tell her stories about all of those wasting their lives away unknowingly. He said they were nothing to be scared of, only tiny objects to despise. Vampires, mermaids, goblins, to their contrary, were the best creatures to exist.

And so, she hoped the soul she felt so strongly wasn't of the human kind.

Felix climbed up a tree, his hands nearly slipping away from the wet wood every time he took a hold of it. His crisp pants showed various signs of neglect: tiny holes, wet and dark, muddy spots, raffled tissue.

Miss Jeanne wouldn't be too pleased. He could already feel her cold hands slapping his cheeks, the disappointed stare, her hard discourse. But his day had been long and boring. He needed adventure in order to relax.

Once at top, he took a tiny pipe out of his pocket along with some herbs he found, abandoned near a puddle on the street. His cousin had told him every natural green plant ever would be relaxing him if he inhaled them, and the time to test this out had come.

It took him some time to light a fire with the miserable matches he had stolen, but he ended up with a clumsily made cigar stacked in his mouth, inhaling smoke. The whimsical taste of it felt weird on his tongue, and soon, the urge to cough it all out appeared, but the teenager persisted.

Felix's mind began drifting away. Vague dreams and vision engulfed his vision, until he fell off the branch. The trip to the ground took longer than expected, but that might as well have been him hallucinating. He ended up landing with a loud thump,

He barely had time to open his eyes before getting his nose crunched up by a pointy thing.

Celeste Crimson didn't usually get scared. However, the sudden wave of energetic attraction engulfing her activated a well-hidden defence mechanism: an immediate foot kick.

She felt no remorse, but she still sank to her knees to check up on this mystery person, wetting her favorite dress even further. She would have to wash it that evening, she reminded herself. That was if she didn't have to take care of the Elected one.

She didn't inflict that big of a damage on them: a broken nose, a bit of blood and a scratch on their cheek, yet she took out her pristine handkerchief and slowly brushed away the blood and mud on their face.

Once she was done bringing them under the porch of an abandoned manor, their eyes opened, the green vivid and joyful as opposed to her pale grey pupils. They muttered a few words, but they came out slurred and unclear.

- Dear stranger, you shall speak up if you wish for me to understand you.

A pause, then:

- Are you real or am I dead, in hell?

- Why, that was quite offensive. Besides, real is quite a silly, irrelevant word therefore I cannot properly answer your question.

This was definitely the weirdest human being Felix had ever met. The girl had a posh, quite exotic accent, yet she was unhealthily white, her scarlet lips were thin and those anthracite eyes didn't have any right to be that piercing.

Her outfit and overall gave the impression she had been heading to a really fancy funeral all along but just so happened to find him and kick him in the face before bringing him to lay his head on her lap.

- What are your pronouns, young one?

- Excuse me?

- I would like to know your pronouns so I can gender you correctly. Have you not heard about the transpire movement? My kind doesn't quite fit in with the roles the goblins put up for us.

- Oh. Uhm. I'm a boy. I'm called Felix.
