A Feeling or an Emotion?
Love
The timeless subject for the majority of stories, songs, quotes and plays.
But why? What is it about this one particular expression that has made it through the centuries?
Is it the passion involved between two lovers?
Or the unconditional and pure bondings formed because of it?
Or the multi-dimensional aspects that are not limited to two strangers?
Or relating to the pining emotion of not being the receiver of the affections you've shown?
So, let's ask this one question:
WHAT IS LOVE?
Maybe it is enjoying that ice cream tub all alone with your favourite movie on the screen.
Maybe it is hanging out with your friends without a care in the world.
Maybe it is ...just being grateful for the things you have.
Or maybe...Just maybe...
Having the ones who never have to make you ask this question at all because they never fail to show you how much valued, cherished and important you are.
BUT
If there is one emotion that can come above love, it is respect.

Respect
Many often undermine the components that makeup respect. It is not just the fact that you are mindful of the person in front of you or doing trivial tasks in return for admiration.
It runs deeper. More detailed. More nuanced. More delicate.
Respect means to be transparent and not give a chance to second-guess. It means being honest, even if it hurts but not insulting and demeaning others in the name of being straightforward.
It means being aware of the facts on how the receiver reacts to the information AND STILL making sure that they can comprehend the facts without creating any misunderstandings.
These are just some basic acts that cover up the art of respect and all of us (myself included) have a lot to learn about it.
The thing is that while love may be the ruling emotion in many cases, it is respect which is the ultimate game-changer. It too, like love, is not just one-dimensional but has so much to it.
Our elders indeed got respect before us simply because of their age but one thing I like about our generation is that we can stand up for ourselves in the most dire situations.
I hope we continue to challenge them.
I hope we continue to understand these emotions and not get lost in the mediocrity of life.
