Chapter 20
It was silent. Eerily silent. Everyone was glaring at Conor once again. He'd done something else wrong. We'd all come to the conclusion that he'd obviously pushed Trudy into the zombies to make sure he could get over the wall and survive. She said she couldn't climb walls and miraculously she fell into the zombies and gave Conor the time to get over the wall. It made me physically sick to think of.
"How could you?" Sadie was the first one to say what we all felt. She had her hands balled into fists by her side, her jaw clenched as she desperately tried to hold her emotions back.
"What the hell are you glaring at?" Conor turned his nose up at us all in disgust. He was acting innocent. I was still on the floor, my leg bent round so I could hold my hand to my ankle. Regardless of if that was an accident or not, he still pushed me off the top of the wall and caused me to hurt my ankle.
"Here you go." Elle had grabbed some ice and wrapped it in a tea towel. She placed it on my ankle, making me jump at how cold it was. She let out a soft smile, almost an apologetic one, as she went and stood back with Sophie.
"This is getting fucking ridiculous." Anthony barked from the back of the garden. "This is beyond a joke." He stood up and paced around for a second, clearly distressed with what he'd witness. "I've never known someone so unbothered by other people's existence. You're a joke Conor! A joke of a human being!" He stormed towards him, eyes glaring hate at him and clearly ready for a fight. I quickly jumped up and stood between them. Anthony opened his mouth to shout at me but closed it again without saying a single word.
"Look, I get how upset and angry you are with him but right now I'd rather focus on what the hell we're going to do now we're in this house." I looked round at everyone who smiled and nodded at what I'd said. "We've lost enough people already, let's just try and make a foolproof plan for the future." Everyone made their way inside but as I stepped on my ankle, pain shot up it and into my knee. I sucked up a sharp breath and doubled over, reaching for my ankle.
"Hey, you alright?" Zayn was suddenly beside me, his hand on my shoulder. I nodded but he knew I was lying. "Come on, let me help you." He grabbed my arm and put it around his shoulders as he put his hand around my waist. "Just take it slowly, put the weight onto me and not your ankle." Together we made it into the house where everyone was stood watching us enter. There was an ominous feeling to this house and the atmosphere we'd walked in to. I didn't like it one bit.
"How is it?" Harry asked, helping Zayn as they led me to a chair to sit down on.
"It's pretty painful. She can't put any weight on it." Zayn answered for me. "I'd say probably a really bad sprain, maybe even a fracture." I looked up in shock at Zayn. Not that I was being judgmental and assuming he was dumb but I was just surprised he knew so much about injuries.
"He wants to be a sports therapist." Niall added, noting the confusion on my face.
"It wasn't... I didn't think..." I stuttered but I couldn't get the words out.
"It's cool, I know. I've had that look thousands of times!" Zayn laughed.
"A fracture? Well fucking done Einstein!" Anthony was back on it again. "Not only did you manage to kill your friend and get Niall injured, you've now fractured the ankle of the only decent fighter we've got!" We all knew he was excluding the sports guys just to make it sound more dramatic, and I was inclined to agree that it did!
"Hey watch your tone!" Elle snapped back. "No one is dead yet."
"Go climb out there and tell that to Trudy!" Anthony shouted. I could see tears in the eyes of Elle and Sophie and I wasn't having any of that.
"Alright that's enough amateur dramatics for the day!" I shouted, silencing the whole room. "Now whether we like it or not we, in this room, could be the last living breathing humans on this earth so fucking shut up and deal with it! We need to think of a plan." I slammed my hand down on the chair arm and silence crept over the room. "We have hundreds of zombies outside this house around the back garden and the front gate. Are we going to wait for them to come in or are we getting out?"
"The gate should hold them for a while. It's reinforced." Harry said quickly. "We could wait here and just try and get some rest and some food in us. If you guys wanna go after that I'm happy. I just wanna stay alive!" Harry walked out of the room and into the kitchen, bringing out bags of crisps and chocolate bars, fruit and vegetables and some sausage rolls. Everyone's eyes lit up and like a pack of wolves we all dived into that food as quickly as it was laid down in front of us.
"Thank you Harry!" "You're a lifesaver"
For once a happy silence hung over the room while we all ate and drunk and got our energy up.
"I've got some spare sheets and pillows. I don't know how you want to do it but I say we should try and get some rest." Harry added, like a perfect host.
"We should take turns, split the good and bad fighters to try and even it out." Anthony was planning it before we had a chance to think. "Sophie, Yas, Niall, Zayn and Liam stay down, the rest of us sleep then we'll swap." We didn't argue, just split off and said out goodbyes as the first group went to have a nap. I finally felt happy that I could rest, even if I was stuck with this ankle hurting right now. We all got comfy, taking different areas of the downstairs to watch for Zombie invasions. Sophie was with me though, to help us both. She'd help me walk and I'd help her fight. For the first time I felt confident.
"Yas?" Sophie turned to me, her face whiter than a sheet, dark circles obvious around her eyes. "I don't feel very well.."
