Chapter 17
"LIAM!" I shouted, attracting everyone's attention. They all turned around in time to see Liam squaring up to Conor, hands balled into fists and jaw clenched. Why couldn't these guys just leave the macho fighting until AFTER we got through the zombie apocalypse? I mean what was this going to solve? I rolled my eyes as I jogged towards the two men, hoping this time I could stop the fight before it began and in turn stop anyone from getting injured.
"Look, if you guys want to go around beating each other up that's fine but I am going to find some shelter and food and get away from the zombies!" Trudy whinged at them, yanking at Conor's sleeve.
"Yeah, can't we all just get along until this awful thing is over?" Elle spoke too, stepping between them.
"We have enough going on without fights within our team." Sophie said sharply, eyeing up everyone on the team. "Right now we are all each other have to help survive so let's just get on with it and cut the petty crap." I smiled as I reached them all and stood beside Sophie, my arm resting on her shoulder. I admired her strength, for standing up to everyone and being heard even when her life wasn't looking good. She knew she was on limited time and, as anyone would, was now reassessing the important things in life.
"Hah." Liam said almost patronisingly as he turned his back on Conor and looked at his friends. "Great speeches guys but it's not happening. This guy is a liability and we either sort this out or I'm going my own separate way." He walked back to his friends and they all stood together, glaring at my set of friends (and Trudy) who were standing opposite them. It looked like a scene from a battle where the two teams stand opposite before one leader shouts charge and everyone runs at everyone else.
"Come on Liam, please?" I asked nicely, part of me wondering if batting my eyelashes a few times would help or not. This would be disastrous! The only people willing to beat a zombie into the ground are the popular guys, but obviously I don't want to leave my friends knowing they wouldn't be able to defend themselves properly. Why did I always manage to get myself stuck in the middle of these situations?
"Yas, I like you and everything but I'm not risking my life hanging around that clumsy moron." Harry shook his head, folding his arms across his chest. "He already nearly killed us with a javelin." He pointed to the javelin wound that Conor had given when we had just left the gym. "And no offence to your friend but he didn't do a good job there either." I bit my lips together as he spoke to Sophie so nonchalantly, obvious that it didn't really bother him that she had been bitten, more that he thought Conor was a liability.
"And what gets solved by splitting up?" I raised my voice. "Knowing that you let five people die because you were being spiteful?"
"Well at least my friends would be safe." Liam hissed, looking back at his friends. I noticed his look at Niall lasting slightly longer than everyone else's. What was he thinking about? He turned back around, his eyes locking with mine in a second. He let out a big sigh. "Alright, lets go. If one more thing happens though, I won't be held accountable for my actions." He turned in his heels and stormed off down the road, his friends following swiftly. I turned to my friends - and Trudy and Sadie- and nodded, jogging to catch up to them.
"Thanks guys." I said as I reached the group of popular guys. "I really appreciate you sticking with us."
"I don't think it's got anything to do with your friends." Zayn said suggestively, nudging an elbow into my arm. "If you catch my drift." He let out a smirk as I looked at him dumbfounded.
"Shut it Zayn." Liam snapped without turning around. He kept his eyes forward as he led the group further down the street, Harry beside him making sure they were going the right way and keeping lookout for zombies.
Zayn let out a short laugh and smirked at Niall who was also grinning at both me and Zayn. What were those two on about? Louis and Anthony then looked at Niall and in turn followed their gazes to Zayn. The corners of their mouths turned up into a smirk as they looked at me too, Louis wiggling his eyebrows at me.
"What are you-" Before I had the chance to finish my sentence, I landed with a thump on the floor, sending my pole flying towards the guys. I looked over to my left to see an athletic female zombie grinding her teeth at me. Blood knotted her hair together, which hung over her face making her look extra scary. She growled lowly at me as she practically jumped onto me, her teeth trying desperately to reach my skin.
"GUYS!" I shouted through gritted teeth as all my energy went into holding her away from me. My legs were bent up to my chest, pushing her body away from mine. I pushed her back by the shoulders, trying to make sure I wasn't scratched or bitten in the process. This was the toughest one I'd fought so far, so much strength was hidden in this petit body that it was hard to keep up. I looked over to the guys and made eye contact with Louis.
"Shit!" He shouted as he bashed the other guys on the arms. "Yasmin!" In turn they all spun round and saw me struggling with this woman. All of them ran to me, Louis, Anthony and Harry pulling the zombie away from me while Niall and Zayn pulled me along the road away from her. Liam readied his weapon and as soon as I was out of reach he swung the pole hard and heavy across her face. Louis and Harry ducked away and then when the zombie hit the floor, began to bash her head in. I remained on the floor for a second, breathing heavily as I watched them end that zombies life. If they hadn't have been there, what would have happened to me? I looked around, making note that my friends were just chatting amongst themselves a good fifteen feet away from us. Had they even noticed? Were they choosing not to help me?
"Thanks for the help guys!" I shouted at my friends before I could stop myself. "God forbid you weren't there to help me get away from that zombie!" Sarcasm ran from my mouth without control. "I could have died otherwise!" I stood up and brushed myself down, picking up my metal pole from the ground and thanking the people who actually helped me in turn. Without a second glance, I took off with the guys following my lead. Finally I see what the guys were saying. They weren't keeping with us for my friends - but because of me. I was the only one willing to help them when they're in danger and in turn they'd help me. My friends stood back when Niall got attacked and even kept away when I needed help. Huh. Some friends they are. Well as far as I'm concerned, if they don't change their way soon, I'll be disowning them too!
