Chapter 14

"I like you." Liam laughed. "You always speak your mind. I never thought you'd be like that."

"Why?" I asked quicker than I should, showing that what he said had insulted me slightly.

"Well you're a Miss Goody-two-shoes at school. Wearing the correct uniforms for everything and never getting in trouble... I never imaged you'd be shouting and swearing and speaking your mind so much. It's good though!" He offered a smile just to make sure I didn't take anything to heart. I know he was just speaking his mind, which we all knew he was very capable of doing even when the timing was wrong. He was never one to be careful of what he said in case it upset someone, he'd say it without care or remorse.

"Well, thanks... I guess!" I said as we slowly made our way back to the group.

"Just have a chat with your mate, remember what I said." He went back to how we all knew him before. I rolled my eyes and nodded, heading towards Conor who once again seemed to shoot me an angered look. If I didn't know any better I'd say he was jealous that I was now conversing with other guys and that he wasn't the only guy I had as a friend. The thing I couldn't get my head around most was the fact that everyone seemed to be caught up in their own little wars with people and emotions instead of actually focussing on what is going on right now... Dead people chasing us and biting us.

"I'm tired." Trudy whinged, dragging her feet as she walked. I could see every person in the group collectively let out a sigh and roll their eyes. Did we care that she was tired? No. Are we all just trying to survive whatever this is? Yes.

"It's not long now." Harry turned to her, trying to be nice. "We're about-"

"Harry! Watch out!" I shouted, pointing in front of us all. A large, rotund male had emerged from one of the houses in the street and spotted us straight away. He waddled at a quick enough pace to be mere feet in front of Harry by the time I'd finished shouting. Zayn grabbed Harry and pulled him out of the way as this man leapt for him, trying to grab him. Harry let out a small yelp as he and Zayn toppled over and hit the floor.

"Grab your weapons, lets go!" I shouted at everyone else as I ran to the front of the group and swung my pole at this mans bald head. It hit with such force, my arms vibrated for a few seconds afterwards.

"Nicely done!" I heard beside me, seeing Liam swing his weapon down on the mans head too. The bald guy fell like a heavy weight, literally, and lay flat on the floor. Louis joined in, hitting this guy in the head as if to relieve some anger and no sooner had he started, Anthony joined in as well. Once we had all made the collective decision that he definitely wasn't going to get up again, we went to check on Harry and Zayn who were just brushing themselves off after getting up.

"Shit. That was a close one!" Zayn exclaimed.

"You can say that again!" Harry sighed. "Thanks Yasmin."  I just smiled and shrugged. I didn't want to say the wrong thing and embarrass myself so I thought it was better to keep quiet.

"You're pretty good at this, I must say." Zayn smiled. "Look, maybe we got off on the wrong foot earlier. Sorry. I can be a bit of an ass when I'm stressed." He looked at me with sincerity in his eyes. He genuinely meant this apology and as I looked at his friends, their expressions told me he didn't do this very often.

"It's fine. We're in an unbelievable position right now, it's understandable. I haven't been myself either. I don't normally swear this much!" I let out a breathy laugh and Zayn let out a small laugh. For once, we had a happy moment and I wanted to cherish it.

"Well this is nice and all but can we keep moving?" Louis piped up, ruining the moment. "If you haven't realised, we're outside and targets for any of those things that come around?" I rolled my eyes and turned to Louis nodding and taking my place back at the back of the group, Harry still leading us.

For a while we walked in silence. Everyone's eyes were just focused on our surroundings and the hope that one of those things wouldn't try and get us again.

"Yas?" Sophie's small voice broke the silence enough to make me jump. I spun my head round and met her worried gaze. "Can i talk to you about something quickly?" She nodded her head to the back of the group and we slowed our paces so we were a little behind them, as I had done with Liam earlier. I made sure I double checked our surroundings before I let her speak, just in case we were caught off guard and all hell broke loose. We had a good little team here, I didn't want to lose that.

"What is it Soph?" I questioned when we'd made sure we were far enough away that no one could eavesdrop.

"I don't really know how to say this." She took a big breath in and out and instantly my heart sunk. This wasn't going to be good news. Had she heard from her mum at the hospital? Was she okay? Had she seen one of my family members in there? Panic set in and I began to breathe quickly, my hands clammy as I waited for the news... but only silence ensued.

"Come on, Sophie you know you can tell me anything!" I put my hand in her shoulder. A lump in my throat was forming at an alarming rate. I couldn't deal with the tension.

"That guy that you saved me from?" She started and sighed again. "He bit me." Tears filled her eyes almost instantly. The fact she had finally spoken the words meant it was true and it had happened. She couldn't hide it any more. She pulled the long sleeve of her top up and revealed an awful, red bite mark. My mouth dropped open and my eyes widened. Oh no. Not Sophie. I grabbed her arm with both hands and brought it closer to my face. No this can't be happening. How did I let this happen? "I'm so sorry Yas." She said as if it was her fault. But it wasn't hers. She couldn't help a towering guy overpowering her. She had help. Only he didn't help. My body filled with anger but tears were still pricking the corners of my eyes. Oh he was going to get it this time, friend or not!

"CONOR!!!"
