Chapter 12
The small ideas I thought would help us were all going to come into play. The noise of this alarm was deafening but I could still trick them. I grabbed a Bunsen burner and attached it to the gas, turning it on and lighting it with the long matches they keep in the drawers beside them. I grabbed a bunch of papers and set the corner of them alight, jumping up onto the next desk and holding them underneath the fire sensor. Within a second he alarm changed and the sprinklers went off. I didn't know if this would even faze the zombies but I knew this would change the alarm to one that alerted the whole corridor of a fire, meaning the noise would sound in the whole science block and not just the door we opened. The sprinklers rained down on us and quickly extinguished the papers I was holding. This was my chance. I jumped down and ran outside, slamming the door shut again and making my way up the path to the others who had a mix of emotions when they saw me.
"What the hell did you do to her?" Louis jumped at me but Zayn was holding him back.
"I'm sorry Louis, I really am!!" I breathed out, the thoughts of what I'd just done to that poor girl coming back in my mind. "It wasn't her any more, she was dead, all that thing wanted was to eat you!" I wanted to be sympathetic but at the same time I wasn't here to make friends, this was a life or death situation and if he wanted to hold a grudge so be it.
"I hate you." He spat venomously, his face showing pure disgust at the mere sight of me.
"Louis!" Harry said, shocked at his reaction.
"She just saved your stupid ass, I'd act more grateful if I were you..." Conor threatened, poking his finger into Louis's shoulder. I could tell this was about to blow up but we really didn't have time for this nonsense.
"Oh fuck off!" Louis shoved Conor backwards and he stumbled into Elle, who in turn fell into Sophie.
"Are you joking?" I shouted. "Are you guys seriously acting like this when a whole load of those things are on their way to have us for dinner?" I flung my arms up in the air. "In case you forgot we've just set off a loud fire alarm that will lead them to the door at the end of this path?!" I ran my hands through my hair and sighed.
"Yasmin's right." Liam finally spoke up. I prayed for that moment ages ago because for some reason or another, everyone listened to him. If I said 'go right' no one would but if he did, they'd run there without a second thought. I rolled my eyes. "We need to get away from here and go somewhere safe. Anyone know a place near here?" Everyone stood in silence for a moment as they thought of places that would be close enough to get to on foot but were also safe enough for us to stay for a while.
"My house?" Harry said quickly. I sighed once more and shook my head. Is he serious? His house? How was that going to be any safer than school?
"Yeah. That's a great idea!" Zayn finally smiled for possibly the first time since I'd met him. Was there something I was missing?
"It's gated." Harry stated to me, noticing my confused face. "The gates are about 10 feet tall, there's no way one of those things could climb it." Now I see why Zayn smiled. I smiled and nodded too. We were actually going to be safe.
"How far is it?" Sadie sucked the happiness out of us with a reality check. "We do have to walk there you know? If there are that many of those things inside the school how many do you think will be out here?" I bit my lips together because I was irritated and didn't want to say something that upset her. Firstly because I was already on bad terms with half the team and secondly she was right. Very very right.
"Well it normally takes me fifteen minutes to walk to school." Harry shrugged. "If we ran it'd obviously be less."
"I don't run." Trudy said simply. That was it. I'd had more than enough.
"Right, that's it!" I screamed out in frustration. "Harry, please lead the way. If anyone wants to stay here or walk or whatever and gets left behind then too fucking bad I'm not going back to help you. I don't know about you morons but I want to get AWAY from the loud fucking noise!" Everyone stood around gawping at me and exchanging glances with each other. "Go!" I pointed at Harry who quickly unlocked the gate and peered out, nodding at the rest of us to follow him down the road. The popular guys lead the way, with Trudy and Sadie in the middle and me and my friends at the back. We were all armed with weapons and pots of acid stolen from the science rooms. Hopefully this would be an easier run than in school. At least outside you had different roads and alleys you could go down and things to hide behind and as long as we got to Harry's it didn't matter which way we went. We'd already lost one person from our team, I didn't want to lose any more!
"This is insane. Is this what the virus does to you? It's turns you into one of them?" Sophie looked around, spooked. She was never very good at handling anything scary or physical, so this was probably her worst nightmare. She'd normally manage to get out of PE and any sports at school but she couldn't get out of this. I could tell she didn't think she was going to last that long.
"It seems that way." I said quickly, keeping my focus on anything and everything that made a noise. All we needed was one of these things to jump out on us and we would be screwed.
"So how do we stop it? How long are we going to be stuck in this house just waiting to be found? Who would even be looking to help us?" She carried on but if I'm honest I wasn't really listening.
"Dunno." I said quickly again.
"Are you even really listening to what I'm saying?" She snapped, obviously annoyed at my short answers.
"Yes." I answered with one word again which didn't please her every much. She tutted and looked away from me, nudging Conor in the arm as if to say 'sort her out'.
"Yas, what's gotten into you? It's like you don't even want to bother with us any more." Conor said and I knew instantly this was more about me not sticking up for him to Harry and Liam than this had to do with Sophie.
"She's obviously traumatised!" Elle snapped at the two of them. "She just had a close encounter with one of those things while tied to a chair when Louis pretended his knife was blunt and then had to kill Susan!" She listed off. "So forgive her for not taking selfies and hugging you guys right now." Elle rolled her eyes and strode a little ahead of those two to stay beside me.
"Thanks for that." I smiled at her, putting my arm around her shoulders and giving her a quick squeeze.
"They'll learn. I don't think the reality of the situation has hit yet." Elle said, and a second after that an ear piercing scream stopped us in our tracks.
