Thirty Three
"Where to?" I hurriedly asked Jesper.
"My house." He dryly replied.
Yeah, you mean 'Kim's palace'.
Keeping that aside. Here, things really got real and intense. As soon as I said that I knew that address, Jesper instructed us to move from my house and I honestly don't know why.
"Why are we leaving your house Yeha?" Nam Seon Ho looked at me.
"You think that I've got a clue? If yes, you are absolutely wrong!" I replied.
"Oh god!" Jamie let out a sigh.
We sprinted down the streets outside my house, the cool evening air whipping through my hair as I struggled to keep up with Jesper's long strides. My heart pounded in my chest, and my palms grew sweaty as we dodged pedestrians and darted between streetlights. The sound of our footsteps echoed off the buildings, making me feel like a fugitive. I glanced over my shoulder, half-expecting to see someone chasing us, but the sidewalk was empty.
Despite the panic coursing through my veins, I trusted Jesper. His usually annoying bullying demeanor had given way to a focused intensity, his eyes fixed on some unknown destination. Jamie had always told me about his impressive academic record and how responsible he became when dealing with his father's business. As the eldest among us, Jesper's level-headedness put me at ease. I relied on his quick thinking and sharp intellect to get us out of this mess.
My lungs began to burn as we turned a corner, and the streets seemed to blur together. The smell of food from nearby restaurants wafted through the air, a stark contrast to the fear gnawing at my stomach. I pushed aside my doubts and focused on Jesper's reassuring presence, my eyes fixed on his back as we kept running.
After what felt like an eternity, Jesper halted abruptly, his gaze fixed on something behind us. We'd traveled far enough that my house was a tiny speck on the horizon, but Jesper's intense stare drew my attention back to it. Jamie squinted, her eyes scrunched up against the fading light, while Seon Ho and I followed Jesper's gaze, our heads swiveling in unison.
The air seemed to thicken as we stood there, the silence between us heavy with anticipation. My heart rate slowed, as if waiting for something to unfold. And then, like a dark specter, a black car materialized in front of my house. My pulse spiked. For a fleeting instant, I thought Mom and Dad had returned early, but...
The car's tinted windows glinted menacingly in the fading sunlight, sending a shiver down my spine. Its sleek design seemed out of place in our quiet neighborhood. Jesper's grip on my arm tightened, his eyes locked onto the car. "What's going on?" Jamie whispered, her voice barely audible.
Seon Ho's face was set in a grim mask, his eyes narrowed. "That's not your parents' car," he stated, his low tone laced with concern.
As the car door swung open, a hulking figure emerged, looking like he'd been put through a wringer. His face was a mess, with a nose that defied logic - it was as if someone had taken a wrench to the middle of his nose bridge, leaving it pointing skyward like a miniature fountain. I bit back a giggle at the absurdity.
This battered giant wore an all-black ensemble: T-shirt, pants, gloves, and shoes. He looked like a rejected extra from a bad action movie. Despite his comical appearance, something about him seemed off. Maybe it was the way he moved with deliberate precision or the cold, calculating glint in his eye.
Jamie snickered softly beside me, no doubt sharing my amusement at the guy's unfortunate nose. But Jesper's grip on my arm remained firm, his expression serious. "This isn't funny," he whispered, his voice low and urgent. "We need to get out of here."
"Jesper, hold up! Who is this guy? And how did you know something was going down?" Seon Ho asked, my tone firm.
Jesper hesitated, eyes locked on the mysterious figure now approaching the house.
"Come on, Jesper. You knew something. What's going on?" I pressed.
Jesper's grip on my arm tightened. "My dad's involved. I overheard him talking about 'containing' a situation. This guy must be connected."
I exchanged uneasy glances with Jamie. This was getting serious.
What on earth is going on here?
