Thirty Seven

I quietly opened the door, intending to wake Nam Seon Ho and Jesper. But what I saw took my breath away.

They were entwined, Jesper's arms wrapped around Seon Ho's waist, their faces inches apart. The soft morning light danced across their peaceful features.

For a moment, I forgot they weren't friends anymore. The scene before me was a snapshot from a different time, a time when laughter and camaraderie filled the air.

Seon Ho's gentle snores and Jesper's slow breathing created a soothing melody. Their chests rose and fell in tandem, a symphony of friendship.

My eyes lingered, drinking in the tender moment. How did they end up like this? Had they finally made amends?

The silence was palpable, punctuated only by the ticking clock. I hesitated, unsure whether to interrupt this intimate moment.

As I stood there, a mix of emotions swirled within me. Surprise, curiosity, and a hint of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they could find their way back to each other.

"Jesper, you're done having your gay moment?" Jamie went next to his ears and screamed.

Jesper flinched and because of him Seon Ho flinched too.

"Jamie, what on earth are you planning to do?" Jesper scolded Jamie. He definitely was mad at her for doing that.

Seon Ho rubbed the sleep from his eyes, his lashes fluttering open to reveal droopy, morning-weary peepers. He looked adorable, like a sleepy child.

Jesper, on the other hand, sprang into action. He slid his feet into his worn slippers.

As he padded towards the bathroom, the creaky floorboards beneath his feet echoed through the room. The sound was comforting, familiar.

Seon Ho, now fully awake, stretched, his joints cracking in protest. His messy hair stood on end, adding to his endearing morning dishevelment.

I watched, transfixed, as Jesper disappeared into the bathroom. The sound of running water and the faint hum of the exhaust fan created a soothing background melody.

Seon Ho's gaze met mine, and he offered a soft, sleepy smile. I couldn't help but smile back.

"What's up with these two?" I asked Jamie.

"I have no clue." Jamie replied.

Jamie and I wandered back to the kitchen, the aroma of simmering broth and spices drawing us in. Aunty Jae's warm smile greeted us as we approached.

"What's on the menu today, Aunty?" I asked, curiosity piqued.

"Korean rice cakes and chicken soup," she replied, her eyes twinkling. "Seon Ho's favorite. It's been days since I've made it. He hasn't come here in a while."

Aunt Jae's voice held a hint of wistfulness, and I sensed a deep affection for Seon Ho. The kitchen was filled with the savory scents of ginger, garlic, and sesame oil, transporting me to a place of comfort.

As she ladled the steaming soup into a bowl, the tender chunks of chicken and vegetables beckoned. My stomach growled in anticipation.

"Seon Ho will love this," I said, watching Aunty Jae's face light up.

"I hope so," she replied, her hands moving with precision as she arranged the rice cakes alongside the soup.

Aunt Jae is a kind and caring woman. She's 49 years old and has taken care of Jesper and Jamie for years. Her face shows her warm and loving nature.

Aunt Jae has dark hair with some gray strands, often tied back in a bun. Her bright eyes sparkle with warmth. She's an excellent cook, always making delicious meals.

Aunt Jae loves and cares for them like a mother.

We ate in comfortable silence, savoring Aunt Jae's delicious cooking. Just as we finished, Seon Ho suddenly pushed his chair back and stood up.

"Thank you, Aunt Jae," he said, his voice filled with emotion.

Aunt Jae smiled, her eyes shining with warmth. "Anytime, dear. You're always welcome here."

Then, Seon Ho did something that took my breath away. He walked over to Jesper, who was watching him with a mix of surprise and caution, and wrapped him in a tight hug.

"I'm sorry," Seon Ho whispered, his voice cracking.

Jesper's expression softened, and he hugged Seon Ho back. "I'm sorry too. But, we can't be friends."

I stared, stunned. What had just happened?

Jamie's eyes widened in incredulity. "You're kidding me, right? Seon Ho apologized just because he couldn't resist Aunt Jae's legendary chicken soup?"

His tone dripped with skepticism, and I couldn't help but chuckle at his absurd suggestion.

Jesper and Seon Ho exchanged a glance, their faces still flushed from the emotional moment. "It's not just the soup, Jamie," Jesper said, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

Seon Ho nodded vigorously. "I mean, Aunt Jae's cooking is amazing, but...it's more than that."

Jamie raised an eyebrow. "More than that? Spill the beans, guys!"

Aunt Jae intervened, her warm voice soothing the tension. "Let's save the explanations for later, dear. For now, let's just enjoy the moment."

The room fell silent once more, but this time, it was filled with a sense of hope and renewed connection.

Here's a rewritten version:

Something was definitely off, and my curiosity was piqued. Whatever went down, it happened last night, and I was determined to get to the bottom of it.

Jesper and Seon Ho's sudden truce had me confused. Though, Jesper made it clear they were done being friends. But now, they were exchanging apologies? It didn't add up. They just wanted to apologise eachother?

Their sorrys seemed more like a Band-Aid on a deeper wound. It didn't erase the tension or the hurt. I sensed unresolved issues lingering beneath the surface.

What really happened last night? Was it just a heartfelt apology, or was there more to the story?

I observed Jesper and Seon Ho, searching for clues. Their body language screamed uncertainty - hesitant smiles, averted eyes, and fidgety hands.

Aunt Jae's warm presence and delicious cooking had momentarily distracted us, but the elephant in the room remained. Their friendship was still on shaky ground.

What exactly happened?
