Thirty one
OMG, I think we finally found what we've been searching for! Jesper's totally convinced, and honestly, so am I. I mean, why would someone label a file 'H' when all the others are about projects, finances, and docs? It stands out like a sore thumb. And then I saw 'CONFIDENTIAL' plastered on the front page in bold caps - that sealed the deal for me. We haven't opened it yet, just glanced at the cover, but I'm dying to see what's inside. Problem is, we're still stuck in this building, and getting out won't be easy!
I'm literally bursting with excitement and happiness! I don't even know why, but deep down, I just feel like I'm finally going to find what I've been searching for - my parents. The thought of seeing them, hugging them... it's giving me all the feels. I miss them so much! Fingers, toes, everything crossed that this file has the answers I need. Please, please, please let this be it.
We quickly made our move, sneaking out of the cabin one by one to avoid raising any red flags. I mean, walking together would've been a total giveaway, and we were so not trying to get caught! Before we went our separate ways, I filled the others in on the uniform storage room's location. I was like, "Guys, listen up! If we're gonna blend in, we need to look the part." Seon Ho nodded, and I knew he'd get the job done.
We split up, each taking a different route to the entrance. My heart pounded in my chest as I mentally rehearsed all the things that could go wrong.
What if someone spots us? What if we get caught?
I shook off the doubts and refocused on the plan.
"Stay calm, stay cool," I told myself.
A while later, we gathered at the entrance, and Seon Ho pulled out a bag from the uniform room. I raised an eyebrow, impressed. "Nice work, Seon Ho!" I whispered. He smiled, and I spotted the file peeking out from the bag. Yes! We were one step closer to uncovering the truth.
"Alright, let's move like we own this place," I said, trying to sound calmer than I felt. We fell into step, trying to look as natural as possible. No nervous glances, no fidgeting. Just casual, carefree strides towards the exit.
As we walked, I couldn't help but think about what we'd just accomplished. We'd snuck into a restricted area, grabbed confidential files, and were now strolling out like we were part of the company's staff. It was exhilarating and terrifying all at once.
We reached the exit, and my heart skipped a beat. This was it - the moment of truth. Would we make it out undetected? Seon Ho pushed open the door, and we stepped into the bright sunlight, freedom within reach.
And then, we were out. Safe. Unbelievably, we'd pulled it off.
We walked towards the main road and called an Uber.
"Where to now?" I asked, looking around at the streets.
"To your house," Jesper replied, his eyes fixed on his phone as he checked the Uber's ETA.
I raised an eyebrow, surprised.
"Why mine?" I asked, curiosity is getting the better of me.
"Why not?" Jamie replied.
"Ms. Moon, shouldn't we hit your place and scan this file? We can also snoop around for any lowkey clues. By suspicious, I mean stuff that could lead to more answers. Your parents probably left some work vibes at home, ya feel? Plus, have you ever actually searched for your own crib?" Seon Ho explained.
"Eh? What's up with that tone? You should like a typical Gen-Alpha boy, You know?" I felt suprised because he doesn't really talk much in that tone.
"아니, you seemed quite stressed so, I thought of explaining you this in a Gen-Alpha tone since, we both love it." Seon Ho replied. (No)
Honestly, I'm obsessed with how Gen Alphas talk - it's like, so extra and sassy! Every convo has a vibe. I know it sounds weird, but hearing them say 'no cap' or 'lowkey' always makes me giggle. It's like, the ultimate mood booster. I don't know if it's a good thing or not, but it makes conversations so much more fun and relaxed. I'm guilty of adopting some of their phrases, and now my friends are like, "You're such a Gen Alpha at heart!"
"I am not stressed, I am actually quite happy about finding this file. Also, I do like the Gen-Alpha slangs, you can use it more often when you are talking to me since, even you like it!" I replied with a grin.
We finally arrived at my place, and the Uber ride was super quiet - I guess we were all lost in our thoughts. As we stepped inside, my friends crashed onto the couch, exhausted.
"I'll grab some water,"I said, heading to the kitchen.
"Nah, I got it," Jesper called out, beating me to it.
Seon Ho and Jesper returned with glasses of ice-cold water, and we all took refreshing sips.
"Alright, let's get down to business," Jesper said, pulling out the mysterious file.
My heart skipped a beat. This was it - the moment we'd been waiting for.
We opened the file and again saw 'Confidential' in bold letters on the front page, we turned the next page and it showed-
'Internal Memorandum:- Haden and Hazel- Suspicious activities
Date:- March 10, 2020
A 20-page dossier containing emails, financial records, and meeting transcripts related to Haden and Hazel's alleged misconduct.'
"Any idea about Haden and Hazel?" Jesper asked me after glancing at the page.
I shook my head "아니요," (no,)
I stared at the names - Haden and Hazel. Who were they? Did I know them? I racked my brain, trying to remember if my parents had ever mentioned them. But nothing came to mind.
Haden and Hazel didn't sound Korean at all. I couldn't picture any family friends or acquaintances with those names. Unless... they were business partners from abroad? That made sense.
My parents had always been private about their work, but I knew they had international connections. Could Haden and Hazel be clients or colleagues? The more I thought about it, the more questions I had.
"This is ridiculous! Anyone could be Hazel and Haden. It's like searching for needles in a haystack!" Jamie was completely annoyed.
Jamie's right, though. Haden and Hazel are, like, totally generic names. We're basically searching for anyone with those names. It's insane!
"Yeah, because Haden and Hazel are super rare names. Not." I replied sarcastically.
As we turned to the next page, we found the names 'Haden Dankworth' and 'Hazel Summer' printed.
I wondered aloud, "Now that we have their full names, Jamie, can you check if they have any social media profiles?"
"Sure," Jamie replied.
I knew Jamie was a social media genius, able to track down anyone's online profiles with ease. Her addiction had been borderline obsessive, but lately, she'd been making an effort to cut back.
That all changed when I asked her to dig up Haden and Hazel's socials. Her eyes lit up, and a sly grin spread across her face.
"Baby, I'm back!" Jamie exclaimed, already typing away on her phone. "Time to put my skills to good use!"
I laughed at her enthusiasm. "Glad to see you're excited, Jamie."
Within seconds, Jamie's fingers flew across her screen, her brow furrowed in concentration.
But as the seconds ticked by, Jamie's grin slowly disappeared, replaced by a puzzled expression.
"What's wrong?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.
Jamie's eyes remained fixed on her screen, her brow furrowed. "I'm not sure," she said, her voice laced with concern.
I leaned in closer. "Did you find something? What happened?"
