Forty Four
Moon Yeha
We all were surprised, you know why? Because we all have seen this guy in the picture.
In our school, in front of the principal's office, there always waited a man who visited our school at least three times a week to meet our school's principal, Ms. Hae Won. A man who stood six feet tall and appeared to be in his 40s, had slight wrinkles on his face; his hair was a curly mess, and he never wore tidy clothes.
We always wondered who he was; we could have asked Ms. Hae Won, but who dares to ask her? We often wondered if he was Ms. Hae Won's husband. But no! Because Ms. Hae Won was popularly known as 'Ms. Double Chin' and 'the-only-unmarried-woman-in-our-school.'
So, we never really paid attention to him.
But, now? He is literally in this picture!! How on earth is he related?
"We know him!" Jamie proclaimed.
"Yeah, no kidding," I replied.
"We almost see this man every day in our school," Seon Ho added.
"Three days a week, to be exact," Jesper said dryly.
"Almost," Seon Ho uttered, smiling.
"Stop with your precision! I am really getting so frustrated, I am so sorry. But, like how on earth is this man related to my parents? At this point, I even feel like Ms. Hae Won is related." I stated.
"I've got some news," Jesper said, raising an eyebrow. "Ms. Hae Won - or should I say, Ms. Double Chin - has been blowing up my phone for the past two days. She's freaking out about why we're playing hooky." I exchanged a skeptical glance with Jesper. "What? Wow, that's some serious dedication to truancy busting." My mind started spinning wild theories, but I tried to rein in my overactive imagination. Was I just being paranoid, or was Ms. Double Chin just onto our skip-day shenanigans? Or something worse like, being related to my parents in professional matters?
"Seon Ho, can you turn the page?" Jamie asked.
"Yeah."
'Entry 5
Code name:- Haden Dankworth.
Age:- 49
Blood group:- B-ve
Status:- Active.'
I swore under my breath. Jesper's theory happened to be correct. Haden Dankworth is not a real name but a code name and this is exactly why, Jamie couldn't find him on the internet.
And, at this point, we know who Haden Dankworth is.
"Listen, I have to tell you all something." Jamie said.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Since Jesper revealed Dad's involvement in your parents' disappearance, I've been desperately trying to reach him. But he's been evading me. Last night, I called Eomma, and to my surprise, Dad answered. I confronted him about Yeha's parents, and his response sent a chill down my spine..."
Jamie came to a halt. "Jamie, what happened? Speak!!" I knew that she was hiding something, I knew that she wanted to say it. I knew that something was stopping her. I knew that it was important for her to say it.
"Jamie, what did he say?" I demanded, my anxiety spiking. I sensed she was withholding a dark truth, something that could shatter everything.
"Tell me, Jamie," I pressed, my eyes boring into hers. "What secrets is he hiding?"
"He knows, Yeha. He said he knows, and he told Jesper and me to stay away from you because this can be dangerous. He said your parents are to blame and that they..."
"They what?" I asked, my voice laced with urgency.
"They deserve it," Jamie replied, her words dripping with an unsettling conviction.
"Jamie, do you know what you're saying?" Jesper's tone was stern, tinged with disappointment. "Deserve it? We've known Mr. and Mrs. Moon since childhood. We've grown up alongside Yeha. We know their kindness, their generosity. They wouldn't do something to deserve something really bad, something that would put them in harm's way."
Jesper's words sounded more like a reprimand, but that didn't hide the truth, did it?
"Of course, I didn't believe him because I wouldn't. I believe in myself more than him. He even mentioned that Seon Ho should stay away from Yeha too." Jamie assured.
"Jamie, I will rather die than not supporting Yeha."
"Will you?" Jamie nudged him.
"I will."
"So, what's next?"
"There's no more in the file." Jesper stated.
"Guys, It's Ms. Hae Won. We are going to meet her. Only she can tell us about Haden Dankworth."
"Alright."
We didn't go back home because, honestly, none of our houses felt safe anymore. I mean, we'd already had a super scary encounter with this huge guy at my place! So, we all agreed it was best to head to Ms. Hae Won's apartment instead. I know it sounds weird, but this rich woman lives in a luxury apartment - she's got the means to buy a whole house, but apparently, she just doesn't feel like it!
Here's the thing - I've got this nagging feeling in my gut telling me that going to Ms. Hae Won's place is a bad idea. And it's not just paranoia - we're talking about the woman who's friends with Haden Dankworth, the guy we think kidnapped my parents! It's like, what if we walk right into trouble by asking her about her connection to him? It's a pretty reckless move, but honestly, what choice do we have? We need answers.
I kept thinking about what Jesper's dad said - "They deserve it." It's been eating away at me... what could my parents have possibly done that was so bad they deserved to get hurt? I'm not just speculating randomly; I know Mr. Kim isn't one to speak without thinking. He's a thoughtful guy who means what he says. A smart person like him wouldn't blindly accuse my parents, which makes me wonder... does he actually know something about what they've done?
We stopped by a cafe to eat something. What cafe? The popular Onion cafe that we all love (except for the fact that my last experience in this cafe was not that appealing.)
Why did we stop at this cafe? Because our hungry stomach's very screaming 'give us food so, u could poop'
So, we sat down and ordered our usuals - I got my espresso with a cream waffle, Jesper and Seon Ho opted for americanos, and Jamie, being on a diet, chose green tea. We were finally eating in peace, and I'd even started to relax, when life had to go and ruin it. We spotted the same guy we'd seen lurking outside my house. Seriously, can't we even grab a bite in peace?! We quickly downed our drinks, left the waffle, and made a hasty exit. But, after observing from a safe distance for two minutes, we realized he wasn't there for us - just a coincidence, he was grabbing a bite too. Shaking it off, we headed to Ms. Hae Won's apartment and rang the bell. She opened the door, and we were taken aback to see...
