Chapter Thirty-Two

Ever since finishing school and getting my results, it felt like I was in a strange limbo, floating around, waiting for the day to pack my bags and leave for university.

The summer was supposed to be time to unwind and relax, but I found myself drifting off and thinking about Zac. As much as I didn't want to, it was like my brain instantly ran to the place where Zac consumed my every thought.

Melissa's dreaded party had finally arrived, all aspects of me didn't want to go. I kept myself stern, constantly declining the opportunity to go. In a turn of events, for some strange reason, I found myself all dressed up, plodding along the cold and empty streets with Ruby.

It was like a part of my memory had been wiped, to the point where I didn't realise eventually giving in and getting ready.

I decided to keep it simple, opting for a linen play-suit which was stone coloured. The back was laced up, creating spirals that showcased my soft gleaming skin. It had a square neck and and puffed sleeves. My look was completed by keeping my hair and makeup simple. My brown locks were neatly tied into a low bun.

As always, Ruby looked stunning. She donned a beautiful midi summer dress that had a pastel floral print. It had a ruched side and a cowl neck, with a slit showcasing her slender legs. Similar to my hair, her voluminous hair was wrapped in a high bun. Intricate silver jewellery adorned her neck and hands, completing her look.

"I can't believe you convinced me to come to this stupid party," I mumbled in a disapproving tone.

"One last party and we can leave this all behind. If you want, we don't have to stay long." Ruby squeezed my hand, as a way of reassurance.

I nodded and we proceeded to make our way. We started to approach the lively house. It was the only one in the street that had various people filtering in and out. A cascade of lights emerged from the doors and windows. The faded sound of music mixed with chatter and laughter, were the only sounds making the street burst with life.

I was taken back and surprised, I couldn't comprehend the thought of Melissa's parents allowing her to throw a party.

Upon entering the house, a sudden wave and loud thumping of the music rattled my ears. The air was thick from all the individuals huddled around together, dancing away to the music. The strong smell of alcohol masked my nose, to the point were I was starting to feel sick.

Ruby and I weaved through the bodies, like cars trying to get through traffic. We finally found a spot away from all the hustle. I shook my head as Ruby offered me a drink. Nothing about this party appealed to me, I didn't even want to touch the alcohol.

My eyes darted around the room, trying to locate Zac. I squirmed on the inside, with the first thing on my mind being him. At the same time, I dreaded seeing him. I felt like a lot of unexplained things happened between us, things we were unable to talk about or wrap our heads around.

I felt my phone buzz in my clutch bag, after retrieving it, my eyes shot open at the message displayed on my screen.

Z: Can I see you?

My heart started to frantically beat. It felt oddly strange Zac texting me like this. Part of me wanted to ignore it, stay the course of the party and leave. But, another part of me wanted to see him and talk to him.

Before I knew it, my thumbs started to tap on the screen, instantly sending a reply.

H: Where are you?

Not a second went by and I had received a response.

Z: Upstairs in the attic.

I felt myself dip a little, the mere thought of the attic made me feel breathless. Something within me, made me feel like bravery rippled through my blood. I knew, if I had an asthma attack, Zac was going to be there for me, acting like an anchor keeping me afloat.

"I'll be right back," I shouted over the music towards Ruby.

"Where are you going?" She replied, clutching onto my arm, stopping me from making a move.

I pondered on the thought of telling Ruby, but I knew very well she would have convinced me not to go. I calmly nodded my head as a way of reassuring her. She hesitantly lifted her hand, letting me go.

I set my sights on the stairs, making my way to the first floor. The whole house was flooded with a load of people. I wormed my way through the crowds. A sudden thought flashed into my mind, it had been a while since we got here and Melissa was yet to make an appearance.

Something wasn't sitting right with me. She was like a lost soul, even though this was her house and her party.

I got to the second set of stairs, which lead up to the attic. The further I got up, the more the pounding of the music became distant. The air suddenly turned hot and sticky in my throat. After injecting a quick puff from my inhaler, I got to the top where I found myself in a dark and dingy room.

The smell of damp was evident and it seemed like this room, right at the top of the house, was nothing but for storage. I stood in the dark for a while, waiting for Zac to make an appearance, but the silence was quite striking.

All of a sudden the light came on and my head jerked at the quick flash of brightness. After taking a while for my eyes to adjust, I turned around only to find myself frozen in my spot. A slight gasp left my mouth as it quivered trying to formulate words.

There, right in front of me, with lips quirked in to a vicious smile, was Melissa. She stood tall with one hand on her hip and the other holding a phone. Rachel and Danielle stood in a cocky manner behind her, mirroring her and snickering in an unnerving way.

For some reason my eyes were glued to the phone in Melissa's hand and then it all started to piece together like I had solved a mystery. She was holding Zac's phone.

"Well, well, well," Melissa let out in a hissed tone. "One little text from Zac and you come running."

I shrugged my shoulders, brushing off the animosity between us. "I would have reacted the same if Ruby texted-"

"You see, the difference is," Melissa spat out interrupting me. "You like the guy I'm with, so being the desperate bitch you are, come running to him."

All of a sudden frustration kicked in. A wave of fury flowed through me and I felt like throttling Melissa. It was forever a ongoing thing, no matter how hard I tried to convince her, she still saw me as a threat.

"How many times do I have to tell you," I frustratedly let out. "Nothing is happening between us, he with you that's all that matters."

I couldn't take anymore of this strange situation I found myself. Proceeding to march towards the exit, I tried to barge past, but the holds of Rachel and Danielle pushed me back. After losing a bit of my balance, I readjusted myself almost choking with rage.

"What the hell?" I scoffed. "What is this? You think you can scare me?"

"Oh this isn't me scaring you, this is me warning you. I've warned you before and I'll do it again. Stay. Away. From. Him," Melissa hissed as if she was a snake with a venomous tongue.

I winced at the way she was so stern with me. I couldn't stand the way she acted like she towered over me. I was a seconds away from exploding with rage, but I ensured to keep my cool.

"This is bullshit," I scoffed, rolling my eyes. "Get out of my way."

After marching once again, all three girls used their force pushing me back. This time I had lost my balance, causing me to thud on the dusty wooden floorboards. The dust speckled around me, causing a sharp cough to rupture from my mouth.

"I think you need to learn your lesson." Melissa spoke in an ominous tone, curving the side of her lips into a smirk.

Snorting at her comments, I opened my mouth to respond, whilst also getting back up. Before I could regulate myself, all three of the snide girls quickly exited and slammed the door shut.

"Oh bloody hell," I muttered under my breath.

Making my way to the door, I shook the handle to open it but it seemed to be glued shut. With great force I tried to yank the door open but it didn't move an inch.

"Alright Melissa, you've had your fun, let me out," I called out with my face close to the door, ensuring that she heard me.

No response was received. I banged on the door with all my might, yelling her name. All of a sudden, the distant booming of the music got louder.

It started to dawn on me that there was no way of getting out. The hairs on the back of my neck instantly shot up. My body quivered and shook like a leaf.

The more persistent I got with banging the door, the more the panic started to rise within me. My heart boomed and hammered against my chest as it felt like the walls were starting to close in on me.

With all the strength in me, my shaky hands tried to pull the door open. With my continuous effort of trying to get out, I was starting to loose my ability to think straight.

I clutched my chest as it felt like my lungs started to seize up. My body was starting to battle with me trying to get a simple breath.

After remembering my phone and inhaler in my bag, I warily made my way to get them. My breathing quickened and panic started to wash into me like a crashing wave. As my hands tried to fumble around my bag, my eyes misted over, blurring my vision. I couldn't quite understand what I was trying to do.

All of a sudden, my knees crashed on to the floor, creating another dust of cloud masking me. Harsh coughs ruptured from within me as I lost my balance, slamming my whole body on the floor.

My phone and inhaler spiralled out of my bag. It was a mere inch away from me, but I felt like a tonne of bricks were weighing me down. I hand no ounce of strength in me to get help.

All I could think about how much I needed Zac.

Tears slowly spilled out, rolling down as I felt myself fade in and out of consciousness. I was fighting hard with my body and brain to reign control, but I was loosing the battle. Simple things like breathing and to even stand, became a difficult task.

Specks of black were dotted around my vision. I had my inhaler and phone in my line of sight, my arm extended, trying to reach it.

"Zac." I let out in a hoarse whisperer.

Before I knew it, the world around me, went dark...
