Chapter One
My body felt like it was being weighed down by an unknown presence. I had nothing within me to move. Darkness surrounded me and I couldn't tell if I was in an enclosed space or out in the open.
The air was hot and thick, causing it a mission for me to do a simple task like breathe. Inhaling slowly and then exhaling; made matters worse, I felt like I was begging to gasp for air. Just as I moved my head an inch towards the left, a subtle white light shone in the distance.
Freedom.
That's all I could think about. I needed to free myself from this empty and dark prison I was stuck in. The more I moved my arms and legs, to reach the white light, the more I felt like jelly floating around.
Within seconds the white light disappeared and my eyes were blinded by a sudden flash of bright hues. After a few seconds of adjusting my vision, it became clear that I was in a room. No decorations, just a plain white room. Confusion was all I felt, it filtered into my brain and I couldn't work out where I was.
As each second passed, the four walls surrounding me inched closer and closer. Beads of sweat formulated on my head, sharp breaths escaped from me. My feet pittered on the floor trying to find an escape, but all I could see was four bare walls.
This was it.
This was the end.
After accepting my fate, I closed my eyes. Waiting for the impending doom. Just as I flicked one eye open, the walls zoomed towards me, squeezing the life and air out of me.
I jolted myself up from my bed as if I was Frankenstein. My chest felt like it was pulled together with a string. Raspy breaths were ejecting from my mouth and I struggled to get a simple taste of fresh air.
My hands automatically land on the inhaler besides me and without a second deliberation, two puffs of calmness injected into my body. As I closed my eyes taking in the fresh sense of peace, a screeching bell ruptured into my ears. The deafening sound screeched into my ear, to the point where I thought my ear drums were about to burst.
It has begun, I thought to myself. The tiring routine had started and I knew I had to get out of this bed and get ready.
***
"Morning," I let out out in a drowsy tone, trying to shake tiredness away.
I had finally made my way downstairs, after a extensive morning of trying to get ready.
"Morning honey," My mum chirped back, as she milled around the kitchen, plating up pieces of toast.
"Morning sweety," My dad responded after, as he helped set the table up.
My feet hurriedly made its way over to the scrumptious pieces of toast, I took one slice and headed towards the door to leave.
"Hannah!" My dad called out to me, stopping me in my tracks. "Take your sister with you."
Great! I thought I could make a quick and swift escape without my dad stopping me.
"Dad. I'm not five, I'm fifteen, I can go on my own," She pleaded, scoffing and rolling her eyes. Her dark brown short hair shook as she moved her head disapprovingly.
I internally screamed, abruptly turning around, moving my eyes around trying to communicate to my mum. She gave me a slow nod and a reassuring smile.
"Robert, Ava is old enough to go on her own, she doesn't need to go with Hannah," My mum said in a calming tone. I nodded my head in agreement, hoping my dad will somehow let me go.
He furrowed his brows and moved his eyes between Ava and I.
"I don't care. As long as you girls are going to the same place, you'll go together," My dad let out in an abrupt tone.
"But dad-"
"No buts. Now go with your sister," He sternly interjected Ava as she tried to plead.
There was no point in arguing he would always win. Ava let out an annoyed groan and grabbed her school bag, snatching a piece of toast in the process. She marched her way, pushing past me. Waving goodbye, I closely followed behind Ava.
As I stepped outside, the cold January air came charging towards me, latching onto my skin, making the hairs on my body stand up. At the same time, the sharp coldness snaked it's way into my throat, causing me to suddenly cough.
Coughs ruptured from my mouth as I struggled to get a breath. Ava stopped in her tracks, and with a concerned look, she held on to my arm, I held on to her like she was my anchor.
I continued to cough, fumbling around in my bag, I finally located my inhaler. Two puffs are injected into my mouth, and suddenly I was brought back from my coughing fit. The puffs soothed my throat, enabling me to breath again.
"Are you okay?" Ava asked with such worry in her face.
All I could do was nod, Trying to regulate my breathing. Ava looped her arm into mine and we made our way to school. Having asthma was the bane of my life, but Ava was always there for me in my time of need. She was one annoying sister, but I loved her.
***
When we finally approached the grand stairs leading to school, we went out separate ways. From afar I was able to locate Ruby, her thick voluminous red hair, was seen from a mile away. The cold air made her cheeks extra rosy, she finally saw me and excitedly made her way over to me.
"How happy are you to be back," She sarcastically exclaimed.
"Don't even start," I groaned. "Five more months and we are done with this hell hole, off to university and never looking back."
Ruby hummed in agreement with me, and then the dreaded bell rang. Knowing I was close to my Monday morning class of business studies, meaning that I had to endure the likes of Zac for two whole hours.
***
I was peacefully sat in my business studies class, waiting for the teacher to make an appearance, when all of a sudden a booming siren like voice, of Zac Carter ruptured in the hallway. It was any second now, and his over-confident and smug ass was about to enter the room.
Not even ten seconds go by, and his booming laughter deafened my ear as he made an appearance. His light brown, short wavy locks, moved side to side as he roared with laughter with his obnoxious friends.
"Hannah Montana!" He chimed towards me, he set himself on the table in front of me. He smugly waved his brows trying to get a reaction out of me.
"Aww what happened to Hannah Montana over the Christmas break? Did she lose her sense of humour? Did you miss me?" He jabbed at me, smiling irking the side of his mouth.
"Actually, I quite enjoyed the Christmas break because I didn't have to see your face," I bitback, as I seethed with annoyance.
"Ouch! Hannah Mon-"
"Stop calling me Hannah Montana," I quickly interrupted.
It was like every time, I somewhat communicated with Zac, it felt like I was in a revolving door. I would often go round and round, getting nowhere with him.
Zac bursted and roared with laughter with his friends, before he even had the chance to say anything, the teacher, Mr Wilson, came in setting himself at the front. I was forever thankful for his appearance, meaning that Zac had to go to his seat.
After rapidly taking the attendance, Mr Wilson cleared his throat, eyeing the class.
"So, as you all know your business exams will be in May, but that will substitute as sixty percent of your final grade. The other forty percent will be from your coursework project, which we are going to start as the new year has started. You'll be paired up with someone, you'll work together and present your project in March, meaning you only have twelve weeks. Before you guys get happy, you will not be choosing your own pairs. In this hat there are numbers, pick a number and find someone who has the same one, that'll be your partner."
Mr Wilson waved the hat full of numbers, ushering for us to come. A wave of heavy sighs and groans bounced throughout the classroom. We were all annoyed and frustrated at the fact that we couldn't choose our own partner.
One by one, we got up and retrieved a number. I look at mine, number four. My eyes darted around the classroom, trying to suss out who could be my partner.
I asked the first few people that came in my way, but they shook their head no. Majority of the class were sitting down with their partner, but I was still aimlessly wondering around.
Suddenly a sunken feeling, dropped into the pit of my stomach. I noticed that Zac was the only one sitting by himself. Please no, please don't tell me he's my partner, I yelled inside my head.
I bit the inside of my cheeks, dragging my feet to him. His smug and sarcastic demeanour evaporated as he saw me towering over him.
"What do you-" just as he was about jab at me with a snide remark, his face dropped.
"Wait, don't tell me you're-"
"Number four?" I winced as I showed him my paper, displaying my number.
His eyes shot wide open, and he displayed his number right in front of me.
Four.
I clenched down on my teeth, I was seething in pure annoyance. The one guy I didn't want to be partnered up with. Now I was stuck with him for three whole months. It pained me that I wanted to do well in achieving the highest grade, and I had to do that with Zac.
