Chapter Fourteen

The clear light blue sky shone brightly with the help of the beaming sun. The clouds were patchy, allowing for the blue sky to be seen. There was a slight icy breeze, that attacked parts of my bare skin.

It was a quiet Saturday morning, in which Ava and I decided to go on a calming walk, in the park. After we got away from the hustle and bustle of the busy roads, we entered into the large park where various walking paths went off in different directions, like branches from a tree.

The freshly cut grass looked like an ocean of green, that expanded over acres of land. The fresh scent of the grass wafted in the air and into my nose, waking me up in the process. Along with the scent of the grass, the fresh air had a slight mint scent masking it, which filled my lungs.

Each step we took, the leaves beneath us crunched. Some parts, no sound erupted, as the leaves had softened. In different sections, the fallen leaves pilled together, creating various patterns, which I took a mental note of.

"You brought your inhaler with you, right?" Ava asked, looping her arm around mine, whilst walking along the path.

I nodded my head, indicating that I did indeed have it. Internally I smiled at how caring Ava was, even though times she acted like she hated me.

"Can I ask you a question?" I pondered.

Whilst we were alone, this felt like the perfect opportunity to talk about her situation with Lexi.

"Sure, what?" Ava responded, wary eyed waiting for me to proceed.

"What is the deal with you and Lexi?" I finally got out the dreaded question.

Ava came to a halt, causing me to stop with her. She brought her brows together, scowling at the mere mention of her name.

"Really? Do we have to?" She winced, trying to avoid answering my question.

"Yes! You two have been at it for as long, why do you fight and bicker all the time?"

Ava let out a sigh, looking far into the distance, past me. She carried on walking, I quickly plodded along the path, to walk in sync with her. For a while we walked in silence, I didn't press further for a response.

"We weren't always like this," Ava began. "In primary school we were actually really good school friends. We practically did everything together in school."

I irked my head to the side, moving my eyes side to side in pure confusion.

"What? You were friends? This is news to me," I let out.

"We were only school friends, plus I didn't talk much about who I was friends with back then," Ava explained.

"So what happened?"

"Well at the start it was just us two, but I wanted to play with other kids and make new friends, Lexi never let me. She basically ruined my primary school experience. When we went into year seven, we were in different form classes. Secretly I was happy, it gave me a chance to make new friends. At the start she would tell me to hang out with her, when I wanted to hang out with my other class mates. When I offered for her to join us, she didn't like it. So when I stood my ground, she didn't like it and from then we continued to fight and drifted apart."

I took in the points of what Ava was saying. For a few minutes we walked in silence, my brain tried to understand the aspects of what went wrong with their friendship.

"Now that I think about it, I think Lexi was just shy back then, she felt comfortable having me as her friend, but I didn't want that," Ava continued, her face had sunken as if she reminisced her friendship with Lexi.

"Why am I only just finding about this now?" I pondered in slight confusion.

"Because you've never asked."

Those four words rang into my ears, causing me to come to a stop. Suddenly, I felt like the worst older sister. With Ava's continued and ongoing problems with Lexi, I never cared to ask.

"Shit," I sighed. "I'm sorry."

"Why are you sorry?" Ava asked, as she noticed me standing behind.

"I never knew the cause of your arguments with Lexi. I just let you bicker and fight." I turned my head away.

"Hannah! Stop being stupid. You don't need to be sorry. If I wanted you to know I would have told you. This happened in primary school, no point in dwelling on it." Ava placed her arm around my shoulder, bringing me into a sisterly hug.

I returned the favour, I placed my arm around her, tightening our hug. The sound of the rippling water from the lake, mixed with peaceful symphony from the birds, made this into a sweet moment between us. The sheer peace around me, made me appreciate the love I had for my sister.

"Do you think you could ever go back to being friends?" I asked coming out of the hug, looping my arm around Ava, continuing along our path.

"I don't think so," Ava winced. "It's too far gone, it's been four years, it'll be hard to go back to what we were in primary school."

"Never say never." I shifted my brows up in a mischievous way. Ava snorted and scoffed at my remark.

We continued our walk, reminiscing and chatting away. As we approached closer to the lake, to walk alongside it, I had noticed a familiar face far into the distanced.

I squinted my eyes, to get a better look. With the movements of someone taking photographs, I realised that it was Zac. He was taking various pictures of the surroundings. When he turned in our directions, pointing the camera at us, he stood frozen for a few seconds.

He lifted his head up from his camera. It seemed as if he was trying to figure out who we were from afar. Something within me wanted to go up to him, especially seeing him in action, taking photographs.

"Is that Zac?" Ava asked, as she realised the same as me.

"Yeah, let's go say hi." I pulled Ava in his directions.

"What?" Ava spat out in hesitation, pulling me back. "Are you crazy? Why do you want to go say hi? This is Zac? Are you feeling okay?"

"Yes I know!" I laughed. "Being his partner in business, I've learnt that he's not that bad."

Ava's mouth was gaped open. She stood there trying to comprehend what I had said.

"Okay, who are you and what have you done with my sister," Ava said with a straight face, showing no emotion.

I evidently rolled my eyes towards her, showcasing that she was overreacting. I stood there, still waiting for Ava to respond further.

"I must admit, you've been acting different lately. There's nothing you want to tell me, right?" Ava narrowed her eyes, like she was some kind of detective.

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"You and Zac-"

"No! Stop! Shut up!" I quickly interrupted before she could finish her sentence. "Don't you start, you're sounding like Ruby and Melissa."

I didn't allow for Ava to respond. Ignoring her, I turned on my heels and slowly approached Zac. I didn't understand why there was slight happiness in seeing him. Surprisingly I wasn't groaning or rolling my eyes at the sight of him, I was okay with approaching him.

"I thought that was you," Zac called out as I got closer. "How come you're in the park this early."

"Came on a walk with Ava." I pointed towards her, where she was far in the back, not making the effort to come over.

"What about you?" I nodded towards the camera in his hand, indicting that I had an idea why he was here.

"Just taking some pictures. The scenery is so beautiful, I normally feel inspired early in the morning." Zac waved at surroundings. I could only nod in agreement, the ambience and imagery around us was picture and paint worthy.

"Can I see?" I asked, waving my hand towards the camera.

The artist in me, wanted to see his pictures. From what I saw in his portfolio, I was excited to see the raw and fresh images.

"Sure." He nodded. He stood besides me, bring the camera up.

After flicking through his camera, he brought up the recent pictures and I was blown away. They were taken so effortlessly. The quality and focus of the pictures were pretty much perfect. To me, it felt like the pictures belonged in a exhibition.

As Zac continued to flick through, one particular picture caught my eye, but he quickly zoomed past it.

"Wait!" I blurted out. "Go back."

"Oh what for? It's nothing just some bad pictures." Zac brushed it off, trying to avoid something. Zac started to fidget around with his camera, which caused me to be more intrigued.

"Show me."

After some bouts of hesitation, Zac warily brought forward the picture that caught my attention. I was looking at candid picture, in black and white, of me. It seemed like it was taken moments before I noticed Zac in the park.

"Shit. I'm sorry I'll delete it-"

"No. Don't. I like it. The picture looks professional. Don't delete it." I smiled.

I suddenly remembered, Ava, who was still waiting for me. I turned to find her still sulking around like a bored child.

"I should get back." I pointed towards Ava. With that said, I quickly turned around making my way back.

A slight smirk creeps on the corner of my mouth. I felt like I should have exploded at Zac, for taking my picture, but it was the opposite.

I felt the heat rise in my cheeks and the sounds of the birds and the water were very clear, as if the happiness in me was appreciating the nature.

It then dawned on me, with what Ruby, Ava and Melissa had mentioned and noticed.

Was there something?

Whatever it was, the feeling inside me was alien. It felt different, but I could only associate it with Zac...
