Chapter 9: Secrets on the Road (2/2)
After that simple exchange, she feels the air ease up around them, almost like they've grown closer, "I actually think, that was the defining point in my life, (Y/n)."
"What?" she turns her head to look at him, confusion evident on her face. "What do you mean?"
"I mean... the moment I saw my sister's lifeless... my sister dead... I changed," he closes his eyes, not sure as to why he's telling this girl he just met a few weeks ago these things he's never told his closest friend. "That's when I started all of my bullshit. That's when I became distant and harsh. I mean, I was always blunt, in a brutal way. But I had a reason to behave when my sister was around."
She rotates her body slightly to face him more directly, "Kid... why are you-"
"I believed... at one point that the world wasn't shit. But do you know, (Y/n), the whole world was built on shit," he tightens his grip on the steering wheel. "You think, just for a second, that your life is great, and in the blink of an eye, the world hits you with a ground opening earthquake and swallows up all of your hope. (Y/n), I think I'm twisted."
She furrows her eyebrows, thinking of what she could say to him, only for nothing to come to her mind. Not even reassurance that everyone has those moments where they feel nothing goes right. Her mind is just a blank slate, waiting to hear more of what he has to say.
"I broke the day my sister died," he reaches up and runs his fingers through his hair once again. "It was... I was all kinds of messed up. I don't think I ever got fixed. Since, I tried to bury my problems by becoming stronger, becoming the guy that people need to fear. I think I did well. Too well. I mean, I only have three friends that will stick-"
"Four," she places a hand on his forearm. "You have me. I consider you a friend. And I'll do what-"
"Stop kidding yourself," he looks away, out the side mirror. "You have Law. And I'm sure that if you had to pick between him and me, you'd choose him."
"Kid, where'd you get that from?" she takes back her hand and stares at him. "If you don't recall, I wanted to continue with you. I was willing to leave Law-"
"Only because I saved you," he rolls his eyes. "And I don't even know why I did that anymore... (Y/n)... you cause me so much confusion. Now, go to sleep. You look exhausted."
She glares at him for a few seconds before he sighs out in frustration, "We'll continue this conversation later, just go to bed!"
"Fine, whatever," she lays down and faces out the window. "Jackass."
"I heard that. And I'll take it as a compliment," his voice hints her into the smile that's probably plastered on his face.
"Whatever," she feels a smile creep in her face as well before she drifts off to sleep. "And you're not broken, Kid..."
