Chapter 9: Secrets on the Road (1/2)

It feels like since the world ended, she's been seeing nothing but road. She feels like she's always in a car, his car to be exact. A sigh escapes her lips, causing the male to look over at her out of the corner of his amber eyes.
"What's the matter?" he looks back towards the road, trying to not crash the vehicle.
"Nothing," she reaches downwards, pulling the lever to put the seat down slightly so she can sleep. "I just feel like there's nothing to talk to you about anymore. Like... I really don't want to bother you with words... or something."
"Ask me anything then," he taps his fingers lightly on the steering wheel. "I don't particularly care at the moment, but then again, it looks like you're going to sleep. Go ahead. I won't mind."
"No, I don't want to force you to hear me snore," she stares at the roof before she starts to play with her fingers. "That's... alright... what kind of student were you, when you were in high school?"
"I wasn't really any student in school," he flicks on the right turn signal and moves into a different lane. "I dropped out as soon as I got the chance. I believed that I'd be some great big inventor and that I was wasting my time there."
She sits up, lifting the latch so the chair followed her movement, "What-I mean-"
"No, it's totally fine," he lets out a sigh, debating something. "I was joking. I never dropped out. But I was almost expelled from the only school that would take me due to my track record. I was a pretty bad delinquent when I was in school. A bad boy? That's probably an understatement."
"I'm sure that's not true," she places a hand on his shoulder. "I mean, I wasn't the best girl either. How did you almost get expelled, like, why did you act like that?"
"Well, I bet up a teacher. He was such an... ass," he looks at her hand, before looking back to the road, letting out a sigh. He feels the pressure ease up as she retracts her hand. "I mean... he never... ask me another question."
"Kid?" she swallows hard, he looks at a loss for words. "You don't have to continue..."
"Ask the question, (Y/n)," he runs his hands through his spiked-up hair. "If you don't... I don't think I'll ever be able to tell you. Just ask."
"Alright," she takes a deep breath, the atmosphere in the vehicle about suffocating her. "Why'd you beat up your teacher... what'd he do?"
"He wasn't my teacher, he was my sister's," he lets out another sigh. "You see, she was getting bullied. She told him... but he said there was nothing he could do... because the person who was harassing her was the daughter of the principal. He told her that even if he tried to bring it up to the principal, it'd just be disregarded. He said... that she'd be suspended and he'd be fired or some stupid shit."
"The following week, she killed herself..." he bites the inside of his lip before continuing, "So I found out in the note she wrote. We all did, and it was true. The principal turned a blind eye to it, and I saw his daughter get her diploma the same day I did. I don't think she ever shed a tear for her. One day, it was suicide awareness or some shit. And all of the teachers were supposed to talk about bullying or... something... I was walking by her old classroom, and I heard him say my sister's name. I think that's when I lost it."
Every noise seemed to drown into the background as she stared at the man who's staring off into space, thinking about his past. For some reason, her heart felt like it was falling into an abyss. It hurt her seeing him in this situation.
After a few more seconds he turns his head and looks right at her; she can see his eyes holding back tears, "You're the first person I've told this too. Killer, Heat and Wire were there, so I never had to speak of it. Thanks for listening."
"Kid," she takes a deep breath before she looks away. "He got what he had coming to him."
"Damn straight he did," he reaches over and ruffles her hair. "He sure did."
