Chapter 7: The Childhood Friend (3/3)
The story ends and the fire crackles as most of them head off to bed. Her mother and father rushing Kid to show him were he'll be staying for the night. She notices Kid looking back at her as he's pushed away, but she doesn't really care.
Everything he did earlier was so unnecessary, if he had just tried to get along with Law, she wouldn't be so upset at him. The same thing goes for Law, sure he's like a brother, but he needs to be more open-minded. She can handle herself, she doesn't need Law to judge everything she's ever done.
She trusts Kid, so why can't he just trust her decisions? She lets out a sigh as the fire grows dimmer, the sound of someone approaching making her turn her head. Law takes a seat next to her and faces the fire.
"Do you trust him?" his eyes don't move from flickering flames. "Like, truly trust him? Trust him with your life? Do you trust him more than you trust me?"
"Do I trust him more than you?" she tilts her head slightly before shaking her head and smiling. "I don't really think that matters, does it?"
He looks over at her and rolls his eyes, his hand ruffling her (h/c) hair, "You're so childish. And stupid. Of course it matters-"
"I'm talking about, if I trust him more than you," she swats his hand away. "I honestly don't think it matters. It's trust all the same, isn't it?"
"I guess you have a point," he retracts his hand and lets out a sigh. "I'll believe what you say. It might be hard, but I'll respect your decision, even if it's the wrong one. I'll bite my tongue until the time comes that I can say 'I told you so.'"
"You are so not going to say that! I'll be the one to say that!" she reaches out and pushes him slightly, causing him to tickle her.
"Stop! Alright I give!" both of their faces had smiles on them as he pulls away. "Anyway... thanks."
"For what?" he stands up, ruffling her hair once again. "I didn't do anything."
"For hearing me out and respecting my opinion," she stands up, relieved that she finally had someone who would listen to her, and lets out a sigh. "Goodnight, Law!"
She wraps her arms around him, feeling his warmth spread into her body as the fire does down completely. He pats her back before he grabs the bucket of water sitting next to the fire and pours it into the pit, "Go to bed you annoying nerd."
"I'm not a nerd!" she huffs out before walking away to her bed. "Not anymore at least..."
She thought she was alone when she said it, but Kid was leaning against a trunk of a tree and heard her mumble. He lets out a sigh before sliding down his back, the bark rubbing against his back like a backscratcher. He casts his gaze to the stars, a frown present on his lips.
Slowly he closes his eyes as he thinks about how the strange, (h/c)-haired woman brought entertainment into his life, but maybe it was time to give that up. She's finally back to where she belongs, with the people who accepted her, and knew her before he did. If he had a chance to see his parents again, he'd... surely he'd...
