Chapter 11: The Town (2/2)

Suddenly, she feels Kid's body grow tense. There's something about that fact, that sets (Y/n) even more on edge than previously. It didn't seem to click in her mind that the world has definitely changed, but now she's getting chills.
For one reason or another, her hand tightens the grip that it had on his jacket, scared of letting go. She takes a deep breath, feeling the wind slightly move through her hair. Silence. Nothing but silence surrounds the group of three.
Law, already being trained in his weapon, already has his hand on it's handle. Kid pulls out his handgun from the holster. She didn't even notice that he had one of those on, since when did he have a gun? The whole time?
"Who are you?" the red-haired male calls out, almost like he isn't afraid of the response. Like no matter what, he's prepared to shoot.
His eyes study the silhouette, filing each specific characteristic about it. How tall, how short, how they hold themselves, how big their shoulder look, how small, trying to figure out if they're male or female, their face shape, anything that could help him gauge just how he can deal with them. If this resorts to violence, just how would this fight go?
The person holds up their hands before stepping into the light. They're wearing a black hoodie with the hood up, matching with black pants, black everything. They surely didn't want to be seen. Yet a smile plays on their lips like they're not threatened at all by the two males with a weapon. Because let's face it, (Y/n) isn't all that threatening. Even with that metal pipe in her hand, she's still clinging to Kid like a little lost toddler. And a toddler is just so threatening.
The wind blows by again, this time just as she was taking a breath, stimulating her nose. The smell of something burning, like a bonfire, catches her attention. She turns her head over towards the smell, and off in the distance, there's a billow of smoke raising from the ground. The feeling of eyes on her causes her to focus back on the shadow.
Now, not a shadow, and showing off his, if he even is a he, pearly whites. He hasn't moved since she looked away, how does one stay that still-
"I asked you a question," Kid cocks the gun, obviously getting annoyed about the silence he's receiving. And you just interrupted my question. "Your name?"
"And your gender would be nice," the female mumbles under her breath, causing Kid to stifle his laugh. But then he shakes his head and puts all of his focus back to the stranger.
"Listen... I'm not here to hurt you," the person says, based on the depth of it, they're either a really talented voice actress, or a male. Yet, she still doesn't like the look on the guy's face, it makes her uncomfortable.
"That doesn't answer what was asked," Law pulls the sword out of its sheath, maybe he can sense what (Y/n) is. And now he knows that something is going to go down.
"What was the question?" the hooded man drops down the cloth around his head, revealing the rest of his face. His eyes look dead, untrustworthy, "Because I don't recall..."
"But... I'm being honest with you. Truly one-hundred percent honest. I didn't come here to hurt you and I'm unarmed," he tilts his hands, pointing all around them. "But they did, and they aren't."
"Shit," Kid curses under his breath, not bothering to take a look at the circle of people that now surround the tiny group of three. "I should've noticed."
"But you didn't," Law hisses, his voice slightly above a whisper. "Way to go, Captain, my Captain."
"Oh, you didn't notice them either," Kid growls, their not-so-playful banter growing slightly louder. "So don't even start with me."
(Y/n) rolls her eyes, they've not even known each other for a month, yet they're already acting like they've been friends forever. Or maybe, it just goes to show how much they hate each other. But actually, "You guys sound like an old married couple."
"Why must you insist on always saying something that implies that we're gay, or interested in each other?" they both say at the same time, locking eyes when they realized it. If looks could kill, (Y/n) would be the only person standing in the middle of the circle. Not for long, but she would be.
A gunshot rings through the air, piercing the ears of the group. All six of their eyes are drawn to the one who had pulled the trigger. Another man, still dressed to the nines in black, looks at the oddball group. Mainly, at (Y/n).
"Can we speed this up?" his voice causes (Y/n) to do a double take. "I want to get back to the base. So I'll go first. We come from the group that runs this town now. If you want to pass through, give up the girl. We don't have many of them here anymore."
The look on his face sends chills down her spin. She might not have liked the first guy, but she sure as hell doesn't like this one.
