Chapter 11: The Town (1/2)
The cars slowly come to a stop, on the outskirts of the town. Kid jumps out, slamming the door behind him, and goes straight to the bed of the truck. (Y/n) scrambles out after him, leaning on the side of the truck as she sees him digging through the supplies.
"What's the game plan, Captain?" Heat puts his body on the edge of his car door, leaning out of his window. "Are we traveling on foot to scope out the area? How many of us do you want to stay and keep an eye on the cars?"
"Well, I was going to make sure there isn't anyone waiting to ambush us," he picks up a bag, a wide smile on his face, before he opens it, tossing a metal pipe at the (h/c)-haired woman next to him. "You're coming with me."
"But you were supposed to train me," she catches the pipe, questioning why he threw her this weapon of all the ones he has in that bag of his. "We haven't trained yet. You've taught me nothing."
"Consider this the start of your training," he jumps down before digging through the side of his truck, eyeing Law. "You're coming as well. Do you have any weapons? Can you wield a sword?"
"I can," he folds his arms, this red-haired man is definitely full of surprises. "But why exactly are you including me?"
"Incase this idiot gets hurt," he pulls out a sword and throws it to Law. "I'm not great at patching people up, but you're a doctor. I'll need you. Let's go."
He pulls another bag over his shoulder before walking away. (Y/n) stares at the pipe for a few more seconds before Law puts his hand on her back and leads her behind Kid. Once they catch up, (Y/n) starts to pay attention to the buildings. Many of them are rubble, while the left rest standing in the area have marks left by a strong flame.
"Did this town get bombed?" she runs her hand through her hair, nothing makes sense. Man, what wouldn't she give to go back to the peaceful days.
"No," Kid's amber eyes dart around the area, trying to pick up any sense of movement, "Those markings aren't from a bombing. They're from a controlled fire... or a form of it. A flamethrower, for example."
"What?" she stops in her tracks and looks around again, "Wait, how do you know?"
"I've had a life of crime, (Y/n). I know these things. It doesn't have to be a flamethrower, or could've been a torch or something else," he shrugs, "I'm just telling you it was controlled. Someone did this purposefully. Or the citizens decided to have a small war with themselves."
"Is that a real thing?" she notices that there's quite some distance between her and the guys, so she runs to catch up. "I mean... do towns really have their own individual wars?"
"Why wouldn't they, (Y/n)-ya?" Law chimes in this time. "There are no laws anymore... someone has to be in charge of the place. What better way to decide than seeing who's the strongest?"
"Voting...?" she raises her hands and lays them flat, palms out. "I mean-"
"We all know that it didn't work," he studies the sheath that the sword is wrapped in. "Just think, only about half of the population vote for the president. Even less people vote when the president isn't concerned."
"Well, it's still better than mass murder," she watches as Law ends up shrugging, and holds the sword in one hand. "You don't think so?"
"The world is over populated, so I don't think it really matters," Kid climbs over some rubble, looking around. "Death is natural. Murder just speeds up the process."
"Really?" she follows him up the rubble and studies her surroundings. "And here I thought you were better than saying that."
"Just because I said it," he jumps off the concrete and holds out his hand to help her down. "Doesn't necessarily mean I will start murdering everyone for no reason."
"That's a relief," she rolls her eyes before taking his hand and softly landing on the ground. "Now I don't have to worry about you murdering me in my sleep."
"No," he runs his fingers through his hair before he smirks at her, their eyes meet, causing chills to run up her spine. "I'll still kill you in your sleep if you manage to piss me off enough."
She averts her eyes, knowing that he wasn't being serious, but still trying to keep her heart rate decreased. She tries to focus on the buildings, covered in soot, her eyes linger on the corner of the street. She stares at it so long, that she thought she was hallucinating movement.
But when she sees it again, she's sure she's not, so she reaches over to Kid and tugs on his shirt, "Kid... I think... there's someone over there."
