76. The Choice
🪐
Rayne, Scott, Liam, and Stiles are driving down a dark road in Stiles' Jeep when Scott gets the text message from Argent
"He's headed to the school." Scott says
"Why's Parrish headed to the school?" Liam asks.
"It's not Parrish... At least, not right now." Rayne says
"Okay, why's a Hellhound going to the school?" Liam asks
"Cause he's got a yearning for higher education?" Stiles suggests.
"Liam, the Hellhound's at the school, so we're going to the school. Okay?"
🪐
They arrive to the school in the Jeep, where they all pile out into the parking lot and walk toward the school as well. Since Liam was in the backseat, he's the last one out, and he accidentally slams the door closed too hard, startling the others with the loud banging noise it creates. Rayne, Scott and Stiles turn back to look at Liam.
"Sorry." He whispers and they walk toward the school under the bridge, where they eventually find Argent walking toward them, his gun in hand at his side with Isaac following him. Argent looks around anxiously as the boys rush toward him to see what is going on.
"Where's Parrish?" Scott asks
"I lost him. He's moving too fast." Argent says
"Scott...? That guy's not moving at all..." Liam says and they turn to see what Liam is looking at and find that a man's body is laying in a puddle of blood several meters away under the catwalk. Argent, Scott, and Liam all reflexively start to walk toward it, but Stiles grabs Scott by the elbow.
Scott jerks his head toward the body as he looks at his best friend, and Stiles reluctantly follows after them. When they finally make it to the body, they all look horrified when they see that the victim's chest and abdomen has been completely torn to shreds by large claws.
Looking slightly ill, they slowly step around the large puddle of blood to follow the carnage out from under the bridge, where they find another body laying several meters away, near the bus bay, that has been just as badly mauled as the first. As they move closer, Liam notices that the bus next to the body has opened back doors that reveal dozens of mauled people inside, and he jerks his head toward the bus as well.
"Look." Liam says Rayne, Argent, Scott, and Stiles squint and look equally horrified when they see just how many people were brutally ripped to shreds and sprawled across the floor and hanging over the seats. To all of their surprise, one of the people in the bus, a young blond man, is still alive, and coughs before reaching out toward them as he weakly pleads for help.
Scott, who cannot bear to see anyone hurting, takes a step toward him in an attempt to help. However, he's stopped in his tracks by the appearance of Parrish, whose eyes are glowing with fire, his fangs and claws out, and the veins of what looks like magma crackling through the soot-covered skin on his chest and back, making it obvious that the Hellhound is currently in charge. The Hellhound's voice has a very deep undertone as he speaks.
"It's a trap." He says and the man pleads again and Scott tries to help
"You can't help him." The Hellhound says.
Then, a terrifying roar is heard just before the body of the victim is ripped in half and thrown onto the ground in front of the bus, his internal organs spilling out onto the pavement, which makes them overwhelmed by disgust and horror. A shadowy figure then makes its way closer to the open back doors of the bus, revealing that the Beast is in the bus and confirming that he was responsible for mauling all the students. Scott's eyes widen as he gulps nervously, and Stiles, who hasn't seen the Beast in person before, looks absolutely terrified.
"That's big... No one said it was that big!" Stiles exclaims
"I did." Liam says
"We all did, you just don't listen." Rayne says.
The Beast roars menacingly at the group, and the Hellhound flicks out his claws and bursts into flames before roaring back. The Beast then stomps down the aisle of the bus, leaping through the windshield and running into the woods at high-speed while the Hellhound chases after him; they run so quickly that they quickly vanish into the tree line before the others can even process what has happened. Scott and the others look completely overwhelmed.
"What the hell is happening?" Isaac asks
"It's getting smarter." Argent says
"Which means more deadly." Rayne says.

"So you spent the night at Brett's?" Isaac asks
"No, I didn't I went back to my house." Rayne says in a matter of fact tone
"At what time?" He asks and she stays quiet.
"We didn't sleep together."
"I thought you were dating Theo?" Isaac crosses his arms
"We aren't dating we are just having relations." She says.
"So he's your new Brett?" Isaac asks
"No! Brett is Brett. Theo is Theo. I can be near both of them. I can speak to both of them. It's not a high school drama when it's either Theo or Brett. There are no teams." Rayne says.
"Whatever you say, Elena Gilbert." He says
"Hey! Don't disrespect me like that ever. It's that or the next flight to France." She says and Isaac holds his hands up in surrender.
"Okay."
🪐
"Oh wow." Rayne says crossing her arms and Isaac turns his head to see a news broadcaster and several camera men who drove there in the van have gathered around to interview Brett Talbot, who is dressed in his Devenford Prep school uniform and is looking pretty smug as he's being filmed.
"While tonight's game is a charity event, we hear Devenford Prep and Beacon Hills have a long-standing rivalry." The broadcaster says
"Devenford always plays to win, but especially when it's for charity." Brett says
"And especially when 100% of the proceeds go to the winning team, isn't that right?" She asks.
"Which is why we'll be 100% kicking Beacon Hills' ass." Brett says and Rayne and Isaac burst out laughing
"Tickets still available for purchase. This is Kathleen Cassidy for KQNB." She says and the segment ends.
Brett walks over to them as they continue to laugh
"What are you doing here?" He asks
"We go to school here, remember? Or are you going to 100% kick out ass?" Rayne asks.
"Not funny." He says
"You're right. Hilarious." She says
"Really?" He asks and picks her up.
"Let me go." She squeals and laughs
"Not a chance, sweetheart." He whistles, she then pokes his side and then he puts her down
"So... you coming to the game?" He asks.
"You bet." She says and she looks up at him
"I want to say thank you. For last night. I really needed someone." She says
"I'll always be there for you." He says and tucks a piece of hair behind her ear.
"Always." He says when she got a text from Mason and looked up him.

Scott, Stiles, Lydia, and Liam are sitting at a table in the library, where they're discussing what they've just learned between their encounter with the Beast and the Hellhound the previous night and what Mason has discovered about the frequencies.
"Mason said it's not just to transmit frequency. It's high-powered-- like, it has to be a really strong signal." Liam says
"And that's causing it to shift?" Lydia asks
"No, I don't think it's just that. Last night, Argent said that it's getting smarter. What if the Dread Doctors are trying to make the Beast grow faster?" Scott suggests
"With frequencies?" Isaac asks.
"No, by shifting. The frequency is just the trigger. The important part is when it shifts into the werewolf." Scott explains
"Like Peter." Lydia nods
"Right! Yeah, when Peter was an Alpha, he got stronger every full moon. Eventually, the burns healed, and he was back to normal." Scott says.
"So, the Dread Doctors don't want to wait for the full moon." Liam says
"They want want the Beast to be as strong as possible, as fast as possible." Rayne says
"Because of Parrish." Liam says and they nod.
"So, if this is happening tonight, what are we going to do?" Lydia asks and Stiles reaches into his backpack, which is sitting next to him on the table, and pulls out a crime scene photo, sliding it across the table so the others can see it.
"Uh, we've got one clue to go on. This came from the hospital-- whoever's lurking inside the Beast is wearing a size-10 of indeterminate make." Stiles says
"Indeterminate?" Lyida asks
"It means it's a partial print. Basically, it was all we were able to get considering all the fire, blood, and carnage..." Stiles says.
"How many size-10s are out there?" Scott asks
"Only one with Parrish's blood on the sole." Isaac says
"So, are we going to try to get the game cancelled?" Liam asks.
"No. No, we're going to play, but we're just going to hope really hard that it doesn't turn into a blood-soaked massacre." Stiles says sarcastically
"Okay, but, umm... Aren't we kind of missing out on a chance to catch this thing? We don't have the 'who,' but we have the 'where' and the 'when.'" Liam says taking him seriously.
"There's too many people." Scott says
"And we still don't actually know if it's going to happen." Lydia says
"It just might end up being a regular lacrosse game. It's possible... right?" Isaac agrees.
"You don't convinced." Rayne whispers to him
"That's absolutely possible..." Stiles says
"So, we're still getting the game cancelled?" Liam asks and they all stand up.
"We're getting the game cancelled."
🪐
Rayne, Scott and Stiles have just arrived to Coach Finstock's rehabilitation center, where they are alarmed to see him staring off into space on the couch in the lobby. He's wearing pajamas and a bathrobe and is completely silent and motionless as Stiles rolls his eyes and pushes the front door open.
"Oh my god." Rayne says in disbelief and they rush toward him and each sit on either side of him on the couch as they try to rouse him into awareness
"Hey, Coach? It's Scott and Stiles and your favourite Rayne." Scott waves his hand in front of Coach's face, and Stiles once again rolls his eyes in annoyance.
"Coach, you're in rehab. You didn't have a lobotomy." Stiles says
"Coach?" Rayne asks and Stiles sighs and turns away, where he notices a checkerboard on the table and is about to pick up one of the pieces when Coach finally moves, instantly reaching out and grabbing Stiles roughly by the wrist.
"Don't you touch that." They turn and look at Coach in alarm and confusion as Coach sits up straight and smirks smugly.
"I've got Nurse Gonzalez by the balls in the last three moves, and she knows it." Coach starts to chuckle in amusement, and Scott sighs and looks over at Stiles, who has lost all patience with him and then to Rayne who chuckles.
"Let it go. You're checking out of this place now." Coach shushes him,
"Not a chance." He says
"Okay, Coach... but we know you're fine."
"Shhh! I have a..." He mimes the motion of drinking alcohol with his hands
"Debilitating disease." He says
"It's called, 'I'm not going to take another arrow to my stomach'-phobia. Look it up!" He shouts in a whisper.
"Nobody's shooting arrows at anyone, okay? We just need you to coach the charity game." Scott says agitated and Stiles puts his hand on Scott's shoulder
"Okay?" He asks
"Charity? Not. A. Chance." Coach disagrees.
"How exactly have you been conning them into letting you stay here?" Rayne asks
"I, uh... I have relapses. It's... It's serious. I've had seven of them." He says
"So... once a month?" Scott asks.
"Yeah! You see, uh, every time they are just about to discharge me... I relapse..." Coach says
"And no one's noticed that pattern?" Stiles asks
"I have phenomenal health insurance. So, why don't you guys get the hell out of here? I hate charity games. They're meaningless." Coach says.
"I don't think the charities would agree..." Stiles says
"What's it for this year?" Coach asks
"Cancer." Rayne says.
"For or against?" He asks and they all look at each other
"Against, Coach. Deeply against!" Stiles says
"Yeah, okay. Well, I'm deeply not interested." He says.
"Coach, we need you." Rayne says
"I will never coach there again." Coach says
"That's okay! Because we don't actually need you to coach the game..." Stiles says and they nod.
"We need you to forfeit."
🪐
The Pack consisting gathered in the empty science laboratory, where they're going over their plan for the evening one last time. Scott, Stiles, Kira Isaac, and Liam are dressed in their lacrosse uniforms in preparation for the charity game.
"Mason, you know your part?" Scott asks
"Corey and I break into the Devenford bus and search their shoes." Mason says
"I take out the TV vans." Malia says.
"Right before the whistle, Coach forfeits the game." Stiles says
"The rest of us are looking for a size 10 with a bloody sole." Liam says
"Just out of curiosity... What if it doesn't work? What if we have to go up against this thing? I mean, I hate to bring up bad memories, but Scott's still healing from what Theo did to him..." Malia says.
"No, he's not." Kira says
"She's right." Scott says and lifts up his jersey to show his healed chest
"It happened the night we got Lydia out of Eichen House. I healed... when we were all together again. When we were a pack." He says and Rayne looks down.
She was glad Scott was healing but... she knew there was a rift, she knew she wasn't part of the pack.
"The Beast doesn't have a pack." Isaac says
"Not like us." Scott says
"We can do this, guys. No one dies tonight."
🪐
Rayne and Stiles sit nervously as they then walk over to Coach
"Hey, Coach? Now is the, uh, time to forfeit the game..." Stiles says and he gets ignored
"Now's the perfect time to forfeit the game..." Rayne says tapping her foot nervously and
Coach picks invisible dust from his whistle before crossing his arms.
"You gotta..." Stiles says and then Coach smirks
"Coach?" He asks
"Stilinski... I've never forfeited a game. And I never will." He says.
"Get on the field!" He blows the whistle and the game begins.
🪐
Halfway though the game Rayne gets a text from Theo, she quickly sneaks off to the school and goes to a science classroom.
"What are you doing here?" She asks
"Can't I just want to see my girl?" He asks.
"Not right now. Something is going it is important."
"So you're helping them. You're on their side?" He asks
"I'm helping hundreds of people not get killed." She says.
"Really? What about the fact that I can smell him all over you?" Theo asks
"Oh who now?" Rayne asks
"Brett." He says and she laughs.
"Is this seriously what this is about? Jealousy? This isn't some werewolf mate love triangle fiction book." She says
"Really? Does he know that? Once ounce of attention and he is head over heels. He acts as if you are the air that he breathes." He says.
"And you act as if I am your fucking follower!" Rayne shouts.
Then a loud screeching noise and Rayne and Theo cover their ears, then once the sound stops Rayne rushes outside as Theo follows her. They watch as Liam runs towards the busses and jumps at the Beast jumps towards him as well.
Theo then turns to her
"We need to go." He says.
Then Chaos struck.
🪐
Rayne and Theo along with everyone else run into the school trying to find the way out
"Rayne!" She hears Brett shout and she turns
"Come on! We should find Scott and the others." He says and then he notices Theo behind her.
"Rayne we need to go." Theo says
"What?" Brett asks as Rayne just keeps her eyes on Brett's.
"Rayne." Rayne turns her head to Theo
"Him or Me?" He says and Rayne turns to Brett once again as he looks at her with glazed eyes
"Rayne." Brett says softly. She looks up at him with a sad look in her eyes as she holds her hand out.
And Theo grabs her hand.
"I'm sorry." Rayne says and turns to walk with Theo
"You said you would never choose sides." Brett says
"Looks like she has." Theo says and they continue to leave the school as the screams of terror start to fade from their ears.
