Chapter 4: Explanations

~Third Person POV~

"You are beings back rather quickly," Oh commented once he saw Tip and Riley walking back.

"Yeah, told you we would just walk around," Tip replied. "Now we're back to doing nothing but reading the same 3 comics and watching you work."

"That is remindings me. Here, I fixed both of your phones," Oh told them and held their phones out.

"Really?!" Tip asked and quickly took it.

"Cool, how did you manage to do that?" Riley asked.

It felt heavier and looked bulkier than before. She turned it around and saw that it looked a lot more high-tech.

"Human phones are being so old it was beings a bit troublesome, but nothing too hard for a Boov to handle," Oh boasted.

"This will make my search so much easier," Riley grinned.

"Wait, do our phone plans still work?" Tip wondered and turned her phone on.

"That will not beings a problem. I have connected them to Boovian atenas. They can reach signal solar systems away," Oh explained. "Beings careful, however, do not stumble to sites outside of your humans web. We do not wants any other aliens coming for to here before the Boovs are to come."

"We'll keep that in mind," Riley replied.

"Can this reach the future?" Tip asked.

"Yes, it coulds but I have made sure you could not because you might cause trouble," Oh replied.

"What? Trouble? Please, my middle name "Not trouble"," Tip replied.

"It is?" Oh gasped.

"I'll be doing some research in the car," Riley excused herself and went inside.

Tip stayed outside talking to Oh about who knows what. Riley searched "Em Path" to see what would come up. The search bar though she had made a typo at first so she opted to search "Superhero Em Path" instead.

The first few websites features various pages from the comics but none of then were about her powers. She continued to look for about an hour when she finally found something interesting. There was a website with a few news articles.

"Are these real?" Riley wondered.

She looked at the picture taken of the heroes while fighting. Em Path looked very young, she couldn't have been older than teenager. There were other supers fighting alongside her as well.

"I always picture superheroes as adults," Riley commented.

She skimmed through the content just to get the jist of what she needed to know.

Apparently, Em Path first appeared on the crime fighting scene after stopping a kidnapping ring in Metroville in 1964. She had the help of Speedster, Cave Girl, and Rebound other rookie supers at the time, with Mr. Incredible and Frozone stepping in at the end to assist. However, she was only seen for a few months before disappearing.

"Perhaps she was not cut out to be a superhero?" She read the last sentence and continued to scroll when a certain headline caught her attention.

"Could Serenity be Em Path's offspring?" Riley read the title.

She looked at the picture they took of her appearance on Halloween and yesterday. The one from Halloween is very dark, but the silhouette looks like that of a ninja with only her hair showing. The second one is during the day so it's much clearer. Serenity was wearing a half mask with her nose and up being covered. Her hair was in a ponytail and both her skin color and hero costume were red with fire coming from her hands.

"New, young hero, Serenity, was first spotted in San Francisco just last month on Halloween. Rumors circulated about it being a stunt to promote the comic book series but just yesterday she made her first official hero appearance when she helped end a destructive rampage by the rising villain Miss Calculation," Riley mumbled. "According to video recordings, which are still under police custody, but have been seen by various witnesses, Serenity showed powers similar to Em Path with being about to change colors and affect other's emotions. However, based on the destruction she caused (albeit minimal compared to the debuts of other supers) and her inability to catch Miss Calculation, Serenity is clearly still a rookie."

"So Serenity is from San Francisco and Em Path is from Metroville," Riley wondered. "If Empath is from 1964–and she looks about 14–and Serenity is from 2016 than that means that Em Path could still be alive at 66 years old and Serenity could be her granddaughter, or maybe even daughter."

She looked up "Superhero Serenity San Fransisco".

The first website was from a comic book company "Parrson Comics" which was a review of a new comic.

Serenity: Ruler of Emotions is a typical story about a young girl whose life turns upside down after hitting puberty. However, her problems are worse than normal as an overly emotional state will trigger superhuman abilities that she must learn to control. The rest of the story will focus on her balancing her daily life with her superhero life after she accidentally reveals her powers during a Halloween party.

"The illustrator and writer are a married couple. Will Gibbs is the main writer while his wife, Veronica Gibbs, is the main illustrator. Veronica Gibbs is also a major solo journalist from Metroville who travels around which is how she manages to get the scoop on all things heroes," Riley read aloud.

"Find anything yet?" Tip asked Riley as soon as she climbed inside the car.

"Not exactly what I was looking for," Riley sighed and rubbed her eyes. "But it is very interesting. So, just yesterday a new superhero named Serenity fought a villain in San Fransisco."

"Where you're from?" Tip asked.

Riley nodded and continued, "She seems to have the same powers as Em Path, and she seems to be the same age as when Em Path debuted. Look at these two pictures."

Riley took a screenshot of both Empath's picture and Serenity's and showed them to Tip on her gallery. Tip took her phone and switched between each picture and hummed.

"This looks like you," Tip commented.

"Right? So I was thinking— wait, what?" Riley asked and leaned over to see.

Tip had accidentally scrolled past the two pictures and found a picture of Riley with a ponytail her mom had taken while they were at the park. Riley flipped between each picture and noticed the similarities. The dirty- blonde hair, the blue eyes,

"Maybe you should take a nap, your eyes look red," Tip suggested. "I'll stay up front so you can lay down."

"Yeah, I think I will. Thanks," Riley yawned and tried to get comfortable.

~Inside Riley's Mind~

"Well, since Riley is taking a bit of a nap, I think a proper introduction is in order," Affection told the rest and turned away from the console.

"My name is Affection. Nice to meet you all," he said and smiled.

Everyone stayed quiet for a moment then finally Joy spoke up.

"Um, hello and welcome to headquarters," she said and smiled, "I'm Joy, this is Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear. We're Riley's emotions."

"I know all about you guys," he said and sat on the chair in front of the control panel.

Joy furrowed her eyebrows and looked at everyone else. They all seemed to share the same look.

"How do you know exactly?" Sadness asked.
"Emotions are developed, none of us knew about each other. We just took over when needed. I've even read all the manuals and there's nothing about any other emotions besides us."

"That's because you're the 5 core emotions of all humans," Affection explained," The other emotions such as myself, Affection, Pride, Jealousy, Frustration, etc. We all know about you and our jobs because we're just not as important. You each have the ability to create us like how you were able to blend emotions for the core memories," He pointed to the Riley's mix-colored memories.

"So why are you here then?" Disgust asked.

"Well, I'm sure you've noticed that Riley isn't a normal girl. Combining her powers with the fact that you don't exactly have the emotions she needs for her situation I am here to help," Affection replied.

He turned his head to look at the new golden pink memory in Riley's memory shelf. Joy walked over and took it out to examine it. She brushed her hand over it to make it play.

"I believe I can trust you," Jamie declared with a smile.

She turned back to Affection and brought the memory orb with her.

"This memory... it doesn't have Riley in it," Joy told him.

"No, because what she was feeling wasn't about her— it was about him," Affection replied. "When someone feels affection, they tend to not think about what they are feeling but rather toward who."

"Why haven't any of the other emotions appeared then?" Disgust asked with a raised eyebrow.

Everyone else looked at Affection awaiting his answer.

"Sometimes having so many emotions confuses Riley's mind," he explained. "As long as the 5 of you can handle it we are not allowed to intervene. On the other hand, when it is too much for you to handle, or if you don't know how to handle it, the other emotions— which are called "maturing emotions"— will step in and assist until our job is complete."

"'We'? Where are the other emotions then?" Joy asked.

"'Maturing emotions"?" Sadness repeated.

"Until your job is complete?" Anger echoed. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Affection turned his head everytime a new question was asked until he smiled and held his hands up for them to listen.

"There are far too many questions for me to properly explain. You can learn about it in the new manuals that appeared when I arrived," He told them.

"I'll start on that," Sadness volunteered and walked to the shelf.

She grabbed one of the manuals labeled "New Arrival(s)" and went to sit on the couch. Fear, who was strangely calm during the explanation, followed behind her to read it as well.

"Okay, well welcome to headquarters again. Now that I think about it, I don't think we have a spare room for you," Joy told Affection.

"That's fine by me, I can sleep on the couch, it's not like it'll be forever," Affection replied.

"Yeah, I'm sure the mind workers will get to work on that," Joy assured him and left.

Affection opened his mouth to reply but closed it and decided against it. Depending on how fast at reading Sadness and Fear were, they would find out a "maturing emotion"'s fate in the end. He found no need to explain just yet.
