Chapter 1: First Curve Ball

*Yawn*

Riley sighed and stretched as she sat up in bed. Her stomach hurt a bit, probably from all the popcorn she had eaten the night before. She rubbed her eyes and shuffled out of her room.

"Are you sure that's this afternoon?" She heard her dad ask from his room.

'They probably have to go to work,' Riley though with a sigh.

"Yes, I will personally take her home tonight, well, you know what I mean," another voice replied, probably an employee. "Remember, I just wanted to give you a heads up to prepare what you will say. Our daughter was ready since she was a baby so we really couldn't hide it."

"Tonight? So only a few hours will pass for us?" Her mom asked.

"Look, I know this is hard, but it has to happen. Do you think I want Boo going through all that?" The other voice asked. "I still have some time, but yours is running out."

"And we can't give her any advice?" Her dad asked.

"No, at least nothing too close to home. Give vague and normal advice you would give
anyone else. Whatever we can keep the same, we have to try," another female voice added from the phone.

'Hmm, maybe it's not about work," Riley thought and walked to the bathroom.

Her mind was still too sleepy to care about much.

~Inside Riley's Mind~

"Hello everyone! Did you all sleep well?" Joy asked happily as she saw her friends come down from their rooms. "Are you excited for today's picnic?"

"I guess," Disgust said from the top of the stairs while fixing her hair through her compact mirror.

She then walked down and went to the control panels to make Riley brush her teeth and get ready for her outing with Mom and Dad.

"What about everyone else?" Joy asked. "Did Riley sleep well last night, Fear?"

"Yeah, she had a pretty interesting dream too. She dreamt that was a chameleon. I don't know how they can even come up with this stuff," Fear replied as he sat on the couch.

"Anger?" Joy asked.

"It could always be better," Anger grumbled as he started reading the newspaper.

"What about you Sadness?" Joy asked as she saw that Sadness was looking at the screen wide-eyed along with Disgust.

"Sadness? Disgust?" Joy said as she shook her hands in front of them, but they wouldn't take their eyes off the screen.

Joy got frustrated and looked up at the monitor and grew wide-eyed. Fear and Anger looked around when they started to hear an alarm. The lights turned red and screens appeared all around them with the word "Puberty" flashing.

"What is making that noise?!" Anger asked furiously.

"Make it stop!" Fear exclaimed as he hugged himself and rocked back and forth.

They both looked up at the screen and screamed in unison,"What is that?!".

Disgust and Sadness were already pressing buttons while panicking.

"Calm down! We can figure this out!" Joy tried to reason.

Anger and Fear decided to "help" by flinging themselves at the controls.

"That is gross!" Disgust said.

"Is Riley going to die?!" Fear screamed.

"Oh no, she's going to die!" Sadness cried as she pushed some buttons.

"If we're going down, we're going down fighting!" Anger exclaimed while pushing buttons.

"Of course, your first idea is something barbaric- nothing new," Disgust retorted while she continued to press buttons.

"Guys stop!" Joy said while trying to calm them down again.

She looked to the side and saw Riley's memories being filled with mixtures of greens, reds, blues, and purples.

~Riley's POV~

"Mom! Dad!" Riley screamed as she was freaking out.

She started to cry, and panic because she didn't know what was going on.

Riley's mom came running quickly into the bathroom and asked, " What's wrong?! Are you alright?!"

"I'm going to die!" Riley screamed out, courtesy of Sadness and Fear.

Her dad ran in and immediately noticed what was wrong. He frowned and looked at the ground. Riley's mom held his hand and squeezed it before he nodded and left.
Her mom went inside the bathroom and closed the door behind her.

"What's going on?" she asked her mom while panicking.

"Riley, I think we need to talk about this," Riley's mom said. "Now, I know this may be awkward but you need to calm down and hear me out alright?"

Riley nodded slowly and wiped her eyes. Her tears had blurred her vision, making her mom look blue and purple. Her mom's eyes held a certain sadness and worry Riley couldn't quite understand. She paled and wondered if it was true. Would she die?

"I think we should stay home today, alright?" her mom said.

Riley nodded and started listening to her mom.

"Chocolate is really good for these times. If you want we can go buy some," her mom told her.

After they were through with their chat, Riley's mom left and Riley took a shower to calm herself.

~Inside Riley's Mind~

All the emotions were just standing there in shock while Riley bathed herself. The "Puberty" button was still shining, but it wasn't making any noise.

"So Riley's alright?" Sadness asked.

"I guess so that's what mom said," Joy said as she scratched the back of her head.

"Okay that chat with mom was totally awkward," Disgust said as she went to sit down.

"Great now there are more things to worry about!" Fear exclaimed shakingly.

"I feel strangely powered by this revelation," Anger admitted as he went back to reading the paper.

"Guys I'm sure it's fine, according to mom it happens to all girls Riley's age. If anything, it should have happened a little sooner. I'm sure no one will notice the difference. All we have to do is follow her directions and we'll be fine," Joy said trying to get everyone to calm down.

"But, what about Mom's gift?" Sadness asked.

"Actually, maybe this is aligning perfectly. If we don't go out we can tell Mom and Dad that we want to walk around and buy chocolate, but we'll go to the mall to buy the gift instead," Joy suggested and looked for an idea bulb.

The rest agreed and Joy planted the idea. Riley waited until there was only an hour left before the release to set the plan in motion.

~Time Skip~

"Mom! Dad! I'm going to go for a walk and then to the store for some chocolate. I won't take long!" Riley explained from the front door.

"Riley wait!" Her parents called and quickly made their way downstairs.

"Yeah?" Riley asked.

"We just want to say, that we love you," her mom told her.

"And that you need to be careful out there. The world isn't always very kind to you sometimes things will take an unexpected turn," her dad replied. "But when you do find some kindness you need to appreciate it."

Riley bit her lip and looked away from them.

"I'm sorry I overreacted earlier," Riley apologized.

She bit her lip when she started to tear up again.

"No, you don't have to. It's normal to freak out when something new and unexpected happens to you," her mom replied. "Just remember, if you ever need us we'll be there."

Riley nodded, "Thanks, I'll see you guys in a bit."

She waved goodbye and walked out the door. Her parents watched her from the steps before making their way inside.

"That "in a bit" might be true for us but not for her," Bill sighed.

"It might be true for us but even then it'll feel like an eternity," Jill replied.

They hugged each other and closed the door.

~Inside of Riley's Mind~

"Okay, Mom and Dad are acting super weird. As in weirder than usual," Disgust commented while filing her nails.

"True, but something important happened today and it was kind uncomfortable to talk about," Joy replied trying to understand where Mom and Dad were coming from as usual.

While on the way to the mall the emotions made Riley look around the city. Joy made the walk pleasant while the others commented on certain stores.

"There's that horrible pizza place," Anger pointed. "Let's go in and trash the place for ruining pizza."

"Ooo! A nail salon! We should go there and get some cute fake nails before going back to school," Disgust said.

"But the nails could interfere with Riley's Hockey games. And what if they break and take Riley's real nails with them?" Fear asked.

"Is that the pound? It's probably filled with poor dogs who won't be adopted," Sadness sighed.

"Okay everyone! Here we are!" Joy declared once they were at the mall's parking lot.

"Joy, I am warning you, if any of the popular girls from school are here we are ditching the unicorn," Disgust told Joy.

"Come on, we're doing this for mom," Joy reminded her. "Now, there are still 20 minutes before the store opens since they opened late today for the sale. It should be right around—here!"

Joy made Riley run to the entrance.

"See? All we need to do now is wait," Joy told them.

"Excuse me? The line starts here," everyone heard an older lady say.

Fear realized that there was a line and made Riley walk to the end.

"Sorry about that. See Joy? This is why we always check our surroundings," Fear told her.

"How long is this line?" Sadness asked.

Riley had been walking for a good 5 minutes, she was taking her time, but still. After a few more minutes Riley finally made it to the end of the line. She looked forward, barely able to see the beginning of the line. Then she looked back and saw more people standing behind her.

"This is going to take a while," Anger grumbled and sat down.

~In Chicago Year: 2043~

"This is perfect for My Aunt Linda!" Oh declared once he saw the Boovian cloudcase.
"Krunkle how much space does this have?"

"Blugh blopph blalugg," Krunkle replied in the native Boov language.

"That is very good," Oh replied.

"That actually seems perfect, it is just a normal brief case, right?" Tip asked.

"Oh no. It is a CloudCase— a briefcase with a built in cloud. Much like the one I let your borrow once. Everything will be organized for her and it won't weigh more than it already does," Oh explained.

"That sounds amazing, but maybe you should get something that's not Boovian? Aunt Linda is very close minded," Tip replied.

"You are being right," Oh sighed and turned blue. "I will never be finding the perfect gift for My Aunt Linda."

"Don't say that Oh, we just have to keep looking. Maybe not at the Boov marketplace? Because I think I know why you wanted to come here, " Tip teased him and looked between him and the pink Boovian store owner.

Oh turned pink and his his face as he glanced at Krunkle who was busy with another customer.

"I can assures you that I am very serious about the gift for My Aunt Linda," Oh replied.

"You can buy the cloudcase as a back up, if we can't find anything normal this will work just fine," Tip suggested. "Besides, I have a feeling Mom told me to do something before we left but I can't remember what."

"Okay Tip," Oh agreed and bought the case.

~Time Skip~

"Oh, we've been looking for hours! I told you a mug or a business book would do just fine," Tip complained as she continued to drive.

"No! It has to be perfect! Is there not another thing she likes?" Oh asked. "At this point the CloudCase is the only gift we can be givings her."

"I guess we could ask Mom. If we tell her we can't find anything she might actually tell us what she got Aunt Linda," Tip suggested wondering what was so special that she didn't want Tip and Oh knowing.

"Very well let us head home and ask My Mom," Oh agreed.

Tip parked the car on the little roof area right outside her window and went inside. Oh put the CloudCase in the back seat and got out of the car. When they heard the bell ring Tip said she would get it as she ran downstairs.

"Mom! Oh! Aunt Linda is here!" Tip called from downstairs once she opened the door. "Hi Aunt Linda! You're here early."

"Yes, I guess I just really wanted to see you three." How have things been?" Aunt Linda asked her niece as she stepped inside.

"It's been great. Oh and I went to a concert and I got to talk to Trystane again," Tip beamed.

"That's great, Tip. And how's your boyfriend?" Linda asked and sat on the couch.

"Stick is fine," Tip replied slightly embarrassed.

She had unwillingly introduce Stick to her mom and aunt once while Stick had taken her on a date at the mall. It was awkward and embarrassing to say the least. Not because of what Stick was like- not that it helped- but because she had never had a boyfriend before.

"My Aunt Linda! How has you been? I am most excited to see yous agains," Oh squealed as he ran downstairs and hugged Linda's waist. "It has beens a long times since you last visited."

"The usual, just busy. Yeah, I figured I could make some time for my family," Aunt Linda explained unsure of what to do with Oh.

"Linda, you're here early," Lucy commented as she made her way downstairs.

"Yeah, my flight came earlier than expected," Linda replied and stood up making Oh let go of her.

"Well, since you're here I think I can go ahead and give you your pres— uhh," Lucy stopped talking and looked behind Linda.

Tip and Oh were moving their arms like crazy pleading her not to give Linda her present just yet.

"My pres— what?" Linda asked and looked back.

Tip and Oh stopped moving and beamed at her.

"Your— umm, your presentation!" Lucy beamed.

"My presentation?" Linda asked.

"Yep! I've made a small play just for your entertainment," Lucy added.

"That sounds fun," Linda replied and sat down. "When will you show me?"

"After we eat, Tip and Oh, could you two please help me with the dishes?" Lucy asked and walked to the kitchen. "Linda, you can just put your bag up in my room."

"Okay," Linda replied and walked upstairs with her bag.

Once she was gone Lucy turned to her daughter and adoptive son.

"What is going on? I thought you were excited about giving Aunt Linda your gift?" She asked.

"We haven't found the perfect gift yet," Oh replied shamefully.

"I'm sure she'll like anything you give her," Lucy replied. "As long as it's not on-the-nose like your last gifts."

"I am not having a nose. Unless you count my nostricles," Oh replied.

"I think we'd find a gift if you told us what you were giving her," Tip slyly added.

"Fine, only because it's getting a little late for you to still not have a gift, but you have to keep it a secret. Oh, that especially goes for you," Lucy warned them.

They both nodded and got closer to listen.

"When we were younger your Aunt Linda hated toys. All except one, a special edition unicorn she would sleep with. This toy hasn't been made since the original release date so it was really hard to find. The page is still up on my laptop if you want to see what it looks like," Lucy told them.

"Thanks Mom!/ Thankings you My Mom!" They both replied and quickly hugged her before running upstairs past Aunt Linda who was walking down the stairs.

They ran to Lucy's room and took the laptop. On their way out the door Tip accidentally tripped on a big trash bag.

"Awe man! I forgot Mom told me to take out the trash," Tip grumbled and stood up while rubbing her elbow. "At least the laptop is okay."

"Not a problems Tip," Oh replied and took out a Boovian device.

He pointed it at the bag and it disintegrated immediately. They then ran to their shared bedroom to make sure their aunt didn't see.

"Woah, this is from 2016?" Tip whispered.

"And there are no more available. It must have taken My Mom a long time to find," Oh commented.

"I didn't think Aunt Linda would be into unicorns," Tip said but shrugged and opened a new tab. "Maybe the company made something else."

They continued to look but nothing came up.

"So you're telling me that company did nothing but sell unicorns?!" Tip whisper-shouted frustrated.

"It is seemings so and we cannot gift My Aunt Linda an inferior unicorn to the one My Mom got her," Oh mumbled deflated. "We are nevers going to find the perfect gift for My Aunt Linda."

"Why don't we go downstairs and sneak away for a few hours after dinner?" Tip suggested.

Oh agreed and they both walked downstairs. Tip's mom walked over to them— making sure Linda didn't see.

"Hey, did you guys remember to close my laptop?" She asked.

"Yep! The gift is amazing, I don't know how we'll top it," Tip replied.

"Oh, you saw it? Did you remember to close the bag up again?" Lucy asked. "I don't want Linda finding it before time."

"No, we didn't see it. We just saw the picture," Tip replied.

"Okay, good. Oh and Tip, don't forget to take the trash out, mine is in my room it's a white bag. Don't get it confused with the black one," Lucy warned them and went back to making dinner.

Tip and Oh froze and looked at each other. They quickly ran back upstairs and into Lucy's room. They gasped and covered each other's mouths when they saw the white bag on the floor. They ran back to their room and screamed into their pillows.

"Can't you reverse the process?" Tip asked.

"No! I can nots!" Oh replied. "Once something has being disintegrated it can not be undone."

"Can you make another unicorn?" Tip asked.

"No! There is no trace left of the gift!"Oh replied and started to panic.

Tip looked at her clock and bit her lip. When an idea popped into her head she turned to Oh.

"Time. Oh, what if we time-travelled?" Tip suggested.

"We can'ts Tip. If we were to travel to before we disintegrated the gift it will only be causings more trouble, what if we run into our past selves?" Oh replied.

"Not to before we disintegrated it, to when it was released," Tip replied.

Oh gasped and started to pace around.

"That might be workings. We can make Slushious into a Time-Traveling car— like in the movies," Oh told her and nodded.

"Let's get work then," Tip told him.
