Chapter Fourteen

- Yaoyorozu -

'Here we go' I thought. I hope Todoroki doesn't get freaked out by all of my family members.

"This is Todoroki," I told my cousins and their dates "and Todoroki this is Kano and Taro."

Kano was a very tall man, about 6'3, with dark hair like mine and brown eyes. He's thirteen years older than myself, so he's in his early thirties but the bald spot on the back of his head made you wonder if he was older.

Taro has brown hair and grey eyes. He was also tall and was very strong. He may appear tough and solemn but he's a total goofball once you got to know him. He's only three years older than I am so I know better than anyone how goofy he is.

Both of them had dates with them. I recognized Hoshi, Taro's girlfriend, and gave her a small wave. I didn't recognize the girl with Kano, but I gave her a smile anyway.

"Where's Akeno and Akiko?" I asked

"Oh, they're getting Naozumi and Rini out of the car." Kano said. Kano said Akeno were brothers and they were very close. I on the other hand was sixteen years younger than Akeno and just wasn't that close to him. I got along wonderfully with his wife though.

"They brought Naozumi and Rini?" I exclaimed excitedly causing Todoroki to shoot me a confused look, "Naozumi and Rini are Akeno and Akiko's kids! They're so cute!"

"Kids?" Todoroki questioned with wide eyes, "Kids don't like me. They just stare at me."

"Kids do that to everyone though, especially the little ones." I explained to him, "Rini only likes me for my hair."

The doors opened again and Akeno and his family walked in.

"Hey there little dude!" Kano greeted Naozumi with a high five, "and there's the little cutie!" He said tickling Rini's stomach.

Naozumi was five and was an absolute ball of energy while Rini was still pretty much a baby. She's going to turn one in July.

Nakzumi went around giving high fives to everyone until he got to Todoroki.

"Woah! Who are you?" He gasped, "Why are you here? Do you have a quirk? What it is? Why is your hair two colors? Why do you have that-"

"Hey there bud, why don't we try one question at a time?" I suggested, "This is my friend Todoroki. He goes to school with me."

"You go to U.A.? So you do have a quirk! What is it?" Naozumi gushed jumping up and down

"How about I show you? It's easier that way." Todoroki said. He held out his right palm and produced a small chunk of ice.

"You can make ice? That's not hard to explain!" He grumbled crossing his arms and staring at Todoroki.

"Hold on now..." I whispered nudging him to uncross his arms. Todoroki moved the piece of ice to his left hand and lit a small, but very hot fire to evaporate the ice.

"Whoa! That's cool!" Naozumi beamed grabbing Todoroki's hand after the fire was put out he looked at me before saying, "I like him!"

Me too Naozumi, me too. Though my liking for Todoroki is very different from Naozumi's Naozumi adores anyone with a semi cool quirk. He likes mine, but he always says "it's too complicated" before running off to hang with one of the guys.

"Hey Momo! How are you?" Akiko asked giving me a hug.

"I'm good! It's nice to see everyone! May I hold her?" I asked referring to Rini who was teething on a toy keyring.

"Of course!" She said passing her to me. I began bouncing her and talking to her while she smiled and grabbed at my hair.

- Todoroki -

I glanced at Yaoyorozu and saw her bouncing Rini. It was extremely cute and I couldn't help but wonder what Yaoyorozu would be like as a mother. She looked like she would be good at it.

"Alright, let's begin." An older lady announced stepping into the ballroom. She looked a lot like an older Yaoyorozu, but with brown eyes. "Akeno, Akiko, Naozumi, and Rini. You're first."

Yaoyorozu passed Rini back to Akiko and the whole family stood in front of their grandma to be inspected.

"Well, I know you two are fine," She said referring  to the couple, "but do you think the kids are ready for this?"

"Yes ma'am. Naozumi has been practicing his waltz and he hopes to dance with his great-grandama this year. He promises his quirk won't get in the way." Akiko explains

"Plus, this will be Rini's debut at the banquet since she was too young last year." Akeno pointed out.

"Lovely! Just lovely!" The grandma beamed, "You two are always so easy! You're approved. Next up, Kano and Maiya, is it?"

"Yes ma'am." The girl said with a small bow.

"Now, I've never seen you before. Tell me about yourself."

"Well ma'am, I'm a realtor like Kano is. I work in another city though. We met at a conference a few months ago." The woman explained, "I have attended a few formal events in the past and have always been told that I'm a wonderful guest."

"Can you dance?"

"Yes ma'am, I can waltz."

"Hmm..." the grandma looked at Maiya up and down, "Yes, yes, acceptable." She decided waving them away, "Yuriko and Hana, your turn."

The two girls walked up to be inspected.

"We're last by the way." Yaoyorozu whispered and I nodded, "She goes by age and I'm the youngest."

"You two always cause me trouble," the older woman sighed, "Fine fine, just don't cause a ruckus or you're both prohibited from coming next year. Next! Taro and Hoshi!"

The last of Yaoyorozu's cousins and their dates step forward.

"Nice to see you Hoshi, will you be singing again this year?"

"Yes ma'am. Taro and I have been practicing." Hoshi told her.

"Good, you have a wonderful voice. Everyone loved it last year. I'm glad we'll be hearing it again. You two are acceptable. Next, Momo and Todoroki, right?"

"Yes ma'am, that's correct."

"Now tell me sir, what is that on your face?" She asked. I knew she was going to. Everyone does eventually.

"That's a scar ma'am" I answered trying to be polite.

"Well, that will need to be covered up. And your hair is... well... it's something alright. Not to mention your eyes..." the woman critiqued. I felt myself slowly getting angry and I was about to speak up when Yaoyorozu stepped in for me.

"Grandma! Leave him be. His appearance is because of his quirk and you have no right to judge him. Todoroki is very polite and a wonderful dancer. He would make an excellent addition to the banquet attendees."

Her face was very pink by the time she finished and her eyes went wide after she realized she had done.

"Is that so?" The old woman question and all Yaoyorozu could do was nod. "Very well, but if he steps a toe out of line he's going home. Everyone is dismissed for today. We'll have another meeting closer to the banquet."

The grandma left the ballroom in a huff. Once she was gone everyone began to talk and mingle while Yaoyorozu and I stood there shocked.

"Yaoyorozu... I-"

"No, don't say anything. I can't believe I did that..." she mumbled, "I never stand up to her..."

"Well, I think she deserves it." I decided and Yaoyorozu looked at me with wide eyes. "Oh come on, you know it's true."

"But she's my grandma..."

"So? No one should treat people  like she does. I'm proud of you for standing up to her." I told her causing her to blush.

"Thank you Todoroki..." She whispered

"I should get going now. I'll see you at summer camp."

"Ah... ok... goodbye Todoroki. Have a safe trip home!"

I gave her a nod and left the ballroom. I walked out of her house and down the path to the front gate. I glanced back to the ballroom window and saw Yaoyorozu staring at me with a soft smile on her face. I gave her a simple wave goodbye which she returned. I really needed to find a way to talk to her more.
