50. Trapped Between Roars (Part 1)

The tunnel stretched endlessly before them, its curved walls narrowing in places only to widen again into eerie expanses of shadowy space. Raelyn's boots scraped against the uneven stone floor, the echo bouncing off the walls, making the quiet seem louder. Her feet ached with each step, the repetitive motion a reminder of how long they'd been walking. She missed the rhythmic sway of riding Maisie, the loyal mare taking her wherever she needed to go. Here, there was no comfort, no sense of direction. The path twisted and turned, and Raelyn couldn't tell if they were ascending, descending, or merely circling in some labyrinthine spiral.

The growing chill had caused Raelyn to change her cloak for the thicker one they had bought in Grorith. The cold bit at her exposed cheeks and crept into her clothes. The others had all followed suit and adjusted their attire against the frost. The ends of Thomrik's beard showed bits of frost, while Hovan's broad shoulders hunched against the cold, his torch guiding their way at the front.

Zypher was worst off. Clutching his tattered rag like a lifeline, the gremlin shivered violently. His small frame and bare skin offered little resistance to the creeping cold.

Rakz trotted at her side. His tail twitched nervously, and his nostrils flared as he sniffed the air. A soft growl rumbled in his throat, and his head darted around as though searching for something unseen.

The tunnel seemed to pulse with an oppressive stillness until a distant, low roar broke the quiet. The sound echoed through the cavernous space, rising and falling in waves that made it impossible to tell where it had originated.

Rakz stiffened beside her, his growl growing louder as he crouched low to the ground, his eyes darting toward the shadows.

The group froze.

Danio's voice was the first to cut through the silence. "Is it just me, or did that sound... closer?"

Raelyn glanced at him. His usual smirk was gone, replaced by a nervous frown as his gaze flicked toward the darkness behind them.

"It's hard to tell," Thomrik said. He lifted his torch slightly, his sharp eyes scanning the tunnel walls. "In these tunnels, sound bounces endlessly. It could be miles away or just around the next bend."

Danio rubbed his arms, muttering, "Great. That's comforting."

Hovan shifted his torch, the light creating dancing shadows that only seemed to deepen the oppressive gloom. "We keep moving," he said firmly. "No sense waiting for something to find us."

Danio sighed heavily, his breath visible in the cold air. "I hope we find the gremlins soon. These tunnels are starting to feel like a tomb."

"Rakz would warn us if something was really coming our way." Benji offered.

Raelyn glanced down at Rakz, whose growl had subsided but whose body remained tense. "I'm not so sure," she murmured, half to herself. Rakz had been uneasy since they'd entered the tunnels, his usual sharp instincts dulled. Something about this place seemed to throw him off.

A sudden breeze, faint but cutting, swept through the tunnel, carrying with it a deeper chill that seemed to seep into Raelyn's bones. She shivered involuntarily, clutching her cloak as the others paused.

"Wind," Hovan said. "There might be an exit nearby."

Danio's head shot up, his eyes brightening at the prospect. "An exit?" he repeated. "Finally!" Without waiting for a response, he started forward, his footsteps echoing loudly as he disappeared into the shadows ahead.

"Danio, wait!" Raelyn called after him, her voice tinged with exasperation. Hovan let out a sigh, his torchlight trailing as they quickened their pace to follow.

The tunnel widened abruptly as they turned a corner, light bleeding into the dim corridor ahead. The icy air hit Raelyn like a wall, her breath misting before her as she followed the others into a large cavern. The space opened dramatically onto the jagged peaks of Icevein Crest, the blizzard outside roaring with a ferocity that drowned out all other sound. Wind howled through the opening, carrying flurries of snow that swirled and danced across the stone floor.

Raelyn pulled her cloak tighter around her, the chill biting through even the thick fabric. Rakz pressed closer to her legs, letting out a soft, uneasy chirp. She glanced at the others. Hovan stood firm at the edge of the cavern, his torch flickering wildly in the gale, threatening to be extinguished. Thomrik and Benji shielded their faces from the wind, while Danio stood near the entrance, his teeth chattering as he glanced nervously at the blizzard.

Danio broke the silence, his voice sharp with frustration. "I thought these markings were supposed to lead us to the gremlins!" He spun to face Zypher, his hands gesturing at the cavern as if its emptiness were a personal affront. "What is this? A dead end?"

Zypher, clutching his ragged cloth against his trembling body, scowled up at Danio. "This is where the markings led us," he said defensively. "I didn't make a mistake."

Thomrik stepped forward, his brow furrowed. "Are you sure about that, gremlin?" he asked, his tone measured but skeptical. "Tunnels like these—it's easy to lose your way."

Zypher's antennae twitched irritably, and despite his obvious discomfort, he straightened as much as his small frame allowed. "I know what I'm doing, dwarf," he snapped. "I followed the markings exactly. If you think you can do better, be my guest!"

"Enough," Hovan interrupted, his voice cutting through the rising tension. He stepped away from the edge, his torchlight steadying as he turned to face the others. "This blizzard is too dangerous. Wandering the peaks unprepared would be suicide. We need to think this through."

Benji rubbed his arms, his breath fogging in the frigid air. "Maybe we should head back," he suggested hesitantly. "Look for another route. We could've missed something."

"No," Zypher said immediately, his voice firm despite his shivering. "This is the way. The markings brought us here for a reason. We just need to look for more clues."

"More clues?" Danio scoffed, throwing his hands up. "And what if we don't find any? Freeze to death while we search?"

Before Zypher could respond, a deep, resonant roar echoed from the tunnel behind them, silencing the argument in an instant. The sound was low and guttural, vibrating through the stone beneath their feet. Rakz's body tensed, and he crouched low to the ground, a growl rumbling in his throat as his head darted toward the darkened tunnel.

The group froze, their breaths shallow as the sound faded into the wind's howling. The faint, rhythmic thud of footsteps followed, soft but growing louder, heavier, with each passing second. The ground trembled faintly, and Raelyn's heart pounded in her chest.

Thomrik tossed aside his torch, embers sparking as it hit the ground, before he grabbed his warhammer. "Something's coming," he said grimly. Benji and Hovan followed suit, unsheathing their swords and stepping into defensive stances.

Danio stumbled backward toward the cavern's edge, his face pale as he glanced between the tunnel and the blizzard. "Fantastic," he muttered, his voice unsteady. "Trapped between freezing to death and getting eaten."

Zypher stood frozen, trembling violently. Raelyn couldn't tell if it was from the cold, fear, or both. She glanced at him briefly before stepping back toward Rakz, her hand resting on the dragon's quivering back. The ground shuddered again, the vibrations growing stronger as the heavy footfalls echoed nearer.

Her eyes darted toward the tunnel's shadowed entrance. Whatever was coming, it was massive—and it was close.

The ground beneath Raelyn's feet trembled, the vibrations growing stronger with each passing second. Rakz let out a low growl, crouching protectively in front of her as the deep, rumbling footsteps approached. From the shadowed tunnel, a massive figure emerged, its hulking frame hunched to fit through the narrow space. Its thick, rough hide resembled weathered stone, ridged and pitted like the jagged walls of the tunnel itself. A mane of coarse, matted hair framed its head, spilling down its broad chest and over its groin, with tufts of similar hair sprouting unevenly across its body.

The creature straightened as much as the cavern allowed, its immense head brushing against the ceiling. Small, beady eyes stared down at them, their dark depths gleaming with a predatory urge. Large, crooked tusks jutted upward from its lower jaw, yellowed and cracked, framing a mouth full of jagged teeth. A foul stench rolled off its massive frame, mingling with the bitter chill of the air. Its breath escaping in visible plumes, the sound of its heavy breathing echoing ominously through the cavern.

"Mountain troll," Thomrik muttered, his voice low and grim. He tightened his grip on his warhammer. "That explains the fallen boulder."

"It must've been trailing us," Hovan said, already moving into a defensive stance as he stared up at the beast

Raelyn's stomach twisted as the pieces fell into place. "That's why Rakz has been so nervous," she whispered, her gaze flicking down to the little dragon at her feet. Rakz's growl deepened, his tail lashing with agitation.

The troll roared, the sound deafening in the enclosed cavern, the stench from his mouth rolling over them. It charged forward, its massive feet shaking the ground with every step. Hovan reacted instantly. "Benji, flank it!" he barked, his commanding tone cutting through the chaos.

Benji and Hovan moved quickly, spreading out to either side of the troll. Danio, however, took a few steps back, his face pale as he pressed himself against the wall near the tunnel's edge. "Great. This just keeps getting better," he muttered, his voice trembling.

"Danio!" Thomrik snapped, his sharp tone making the thief flinch. "Stop cowering and do something useful!"

Rakz darted forward, launching himself at the troll's leg in an attempt to slow its assault. The little dragon sank his teeth into the thick hide, but the troll roared in anger, kicking him away with a brutal swing of its massive foot. Rakz yelped as he tumbled across the ground, landing in a heap at Raelyn's feet. She crouched quickly, her hands trembling as she checked him. "Rakz! Are you okay?" The little dragon shook himself off, growling as he pushed back onto his feet.

Hovan and Benji darted in, their swords glinting in the dim torchlight as they moved as one. Hovan lunged first, aiming a powerful slash at the troll's thickly muscled leg. The blade struck true, but it barely scraped the hide, leaving only a shallow mark. The troll roared, its massive arm sweeping down in an attempt to grab him.

Hovan sidestepped the attack with a grunt, the displaced air from the troll's hand ruffling his mohawk. "Come on, you ugly brute!" he shouted, baiting the beast into another strike.

As the troll's attention fixated on Hovan, Benji dashed in from the side, his sword slicing toward the creature's other leg. The steel clanged against the rough hide, the impact reverberating through Benji's arm. He grit his teeth and stepped back quickly as the troll's head whipped toward him, its beady eyes narrowing.

Seizing the opportunity, Hovan brought his blade around in a wide arc, aiming for the troll's outstretched arm. The strike landed but barely drew a scratch, the troll's hide seemingly impenetrable. Hovan cursed under his breath as the troll roared again, its attention shifting back and forth between him and Benji.

Thomrik charged forward, his warhammer held aloft, his movements deceptively quick for his stout frame. He aimed a crushing blow at the troll's knee, but the creature seemed to anticipate the attack. It turned sharply, swinging its massive hand toward Thomrik with startling speed. The dwarf was forced to leap back, narrowly avoiding the swipe as the troll bellowed in frustration.

"Watch yourself, Thomrik!" Hovan called. With the troll's attention momentarily diverted, Hovan surged forward again, plunging his sword toward its side. This time, the blade sunk in just enough to draw a thin line of blood. The troll roared in anger, its hulking frame twisting as it tried to retaliate.

Danio stood at the edge of the chaotic battle, Raelyn's sword clutched tightly in his trembling hand. His feet shifted restlessly on the rocky floor, hopping from side to side as if testing the weight of his own indecision. His wide eyes darted between the troll and his companions, watching their coordinated attacks but failing to summon the courage to join them. Each time he seemed to gather himself for a strike, his body tensed, only for his grip to falter and his step to retreat. The sword blade reflected the hesitation etched across his face. Every shout and clang of metal against the troll's hide made him flinch, his breath coming in shallow bursts as he wavered, paralyzed by the fear of acting—and the shame of not.

Their coordination created a relentless rhythm of attack and retreat, but the beast's thick hide and brute strength made every exchange perilous. Raelyn's heart pounded as she stepped back, her hands glowing faintly with magic as she prepared to launch a magical attack.

"Raelyn, don't!" Hovan shouted.

She hesitated. "Why not?"

"You'll risk a cave-in!" Hovan said, dodging a swing from the troll's massive arm. "We'll have nowhere left to go if you bring the ceiling down on us."

Raelyn's gaze darted to the walls and ceiling, the jagged stone already trembling from the troll's movements. She swallowed hard, lowering her hands. Without her sword—still in Danio's possession—she could do little but watch.

The troll let out another bellow, its eyes narrowing as it focused on Zypher, clearly an easier target then those brave enough to face him. The gremlin, shivering against the wall, seemed frozen in place as the troll reached for him with a gnarled hand. Thomrik noticed immediately, his voice booming as he lunged toward Zypher. "Get back!"

Thomrik grabbed Zypher by the arm, trying to pull him out of harm's way, but as soon as Thomrik touched him the gremlin's eyes widened and he yanked his arm back. "Don't touch me, dwarf!" he shouted, stumbling back. His voice was shrill with panic.

The troll's massive hand closed around Zypher, lifting him off the ground as the gremlin let out a startled scream. "Zypher!" Raelyn cried, as the troll raised him toward its gaping maw.

Thomrik roared in fury, charging forward with his warhammer raised. "Put him down! We need him!" he bellowed. The muscles on his broad arms bulged as he swung the weapon with all his might. The warhammer slammed into the troll's shin with a sickening crunch. The beast howled in pain, dropping Zypher as it staggered back. The gremlin's arms flailed in the air as he tumbled down from a great height.

Without hesitation, Thomrik tossed aside his warhammer and dove forward, catching Zypher before he hit the ground. The troll stumbled, its massive frame colliding with the cavern wall. The impact sent a shower of rocks tumbling from the ceiling.

"Watch out!" Hovan shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos.

Raelyn's instincts took over as a large rock hurtled toward her. She raised her hands, conjuring a shimmering Shield of Light. The rock shattered against the barrier, crumbling into harmless fragments that scattered across the ground. Around her, the others dodged the falling debris, the cavern filled with the sound of cracking stone and panicked shouts.

The troll, clutching its injured leg, let out a final, pained roar before retreating into the tunnel. Its heavy footsteps echoed as it disappeared into the darkness, leaving behind a trail of broken stone.
