-Chapter Thirty-Two-

Frisk was three days overdue. The house was constantly on the verge of silence, awkward, tense conversations being the only source of noise. Chara could tell that Frisk was getting anxious, being confined to the house by Toriel. Chara was a wreck, asking the same questions over and over.

"Is something wrong? Is it supposed to be like this?"

"Chara, I'm fine." Frisk answered calmly,"Now, remember what I said I needed?"

"Socks, bottles, and, um, a Twix bar."

"Yep. So, why don't you go get those things and stop fretting over me."

"I don't really want to leave you, though."

     "Chara."

     "Fine."

Frisk kissed her cheek and watched her leave. Chara hesitated at the front door for a second, but was relieved to get outside. The twins, Papyrus, Asriel and Asgore were at Sans's apartment, making the house unnervingly quiet.

Finally at the store, Chara hurried to the back. While she was looking through the baby socks, debating between red and blue, she felt like she was being watched. Comprising and picking purple, she hurried off, the strange feeling following her.

Suddenly, a guy stepped out in front of her. He was tall, and looked to be about 18. He had long, dark hair that was heavily greased flat. He had tan skin, sparkling brown eyes, and a confident smirk.

     "Hey there. I'm Khan."

     "As in Genghis Khan?"

"I can't tell you how many times I've gotten that. I, uh, couldn't help notice that you're alone." He noticed the little socks,"Got a kid sister?"

     "Um-"

"Hey, I recognize you now. Chara, right?"

"Yeah. Look, I've gotta go, my g-"

"Oh, okay. Here, take my number. Call me sometime, k?"

     "Um, sure."

"Well, see ya around, Chara Dreemurr."

He grinned and vanished around the aisle. Chara shook herself mentally and pushed away her uneasiness. The feeling of being watched could be explained by that guy, but she wasn't sure.

After checking out and stepping outside, Chara shivered. The wind was picking up, bits of leaves flying around. She shivered, the hairs on her neck standing up. Driving away, she pretended that she didn't see someone staring at her from their car.

---

"Frisk, do you want me stay with you?"

"Chara. I am just going for a walk. I'm going crazy stuck in here. I'll be fine."

"Frisk, please. You're not supposed to go out. "

"I know, but I'm bored. Honestly, you worry so much, it may as well be you having the baby."

"Please let me come with you." Chara couldn't put the feeling of being watched away.

"Chara."

"Fine. I love you."

Frisk grinned and heaved herself off the bed, at the door she turned and winked,"I'm just going to the backyard, you know. If you'd have just let me talk."

Chara scoffed as she swayed down the stairs and went outside. Chara watched her through the window. She sat on the grass and stretched out. Frisk glanced up at the window and waved, smiling.

Toriel walked outside and looked startled when she saw Frisk. She tried to scold her while helping her to the house. Frisk cast and amused and sheepish glance towards the window.

"Welp," Frisk sighed, plopping down on the sofa,"I got out for a while. Fresh air."

Chara giggled and leaned back into the couch cushions. Toriel was cooking dinner, and the amazing smells of baked chicken and rolls filled the air. Chara poked Frisk's cheek. Frisk poked back. They got into a little poking war.

     Frisk accidentally poked Chara's eye.

     "Oww." Chara whined,"My eye."

     "Oh!" Frisk kissed her quickly,"Better?"

"Much. It smells good, doesn't it."

     "Yeah."

They were quiet for a while. Then Frisk's phone rang. She glanced and the caller ID and stood up.

     "I gotta go real quick."

She disappeared into a bathroom. Chara walked up to Toriel, who was preparing drinks for everyone.

"Any idea what that was about?"

"No. I believe it has something to do with Asgore's constant meetings, though."

"Dad has been gone a lot?" Chara hadn't noticed his absence.

"He normally leaves after you retire for the night."

"Oh... Do you know what the meetings are about?"

"Well, I do know what they are called for. I do not want to worry you, child, so I would rather not tell you."

Chara decided not to press it further,"Okay. It, uh, smells good, mom."

"Thank you! I didn't have to prepare as much as normal, since everyone is at Sans's house, so it should be done rather quickly."

Chara smiled and went back to the living room to wait for Frisk. A few minutes later she emerged from the bathroom, concern etched on her face.

     "What's wrong?"

"Things just got bad. A human group has revealed themselves as 'Humanity's Only Hope.' That's actually the name of their group. Apparently, some humans were born with an ancient gene that gave them magic. Some have it stronger than others, but they're all dangerous nonetheless. They said," Frisk cleared her throat, tears filling her sparkling eyes,"They said that monsters don't belong on the surface. I know we've had situations like this before, but it's only been one or two people. This isn't good."

Chara softly wiped away the tears that had begun to fall,"Hey, it'll be okay. These things always work out."

"I know that it should be okay, but I'm scared. These people seem serious. They're... determined to get rid of the monsters. Too determined."

"We'll be fine. No one is going to be taken away. Not with us up here."

"Chara. I really hope you're right. I really, really hope that you're right. Because if something goes wrong... I don't even know if I can reset anymore."

"No. Don't even talk about resetting."

     "S-sorry."

"Don't worry. You will not have to reset. Never again."

Frisk just looked at her, something swirling in her eyes, something Chara couldn't read.

---

     "Great dinner, Tori."

"Thanks Jojo. Honestly though, I must thank you. You've stayed here for three days, just waiting."

"Ah, it's no trouble. I enjoy staying here. Besides, I'm not gonna just abandon Frisk."

Chara glanced at Frisk, expecting her to blush. But she just stared at her plate with her eyes narrowed.

"Frisk?"

"C-Chara, it's t-time."

Oh.

Oh no.
