-Chapter Thirty-Four-
"Hey, it's time to get up. Mom made breakfast."
Chara groaned and sat up, rubbing her eyes. It had been a long night of Cory crying, and it seemed that she had closed her eyes only a moment ago. Wordlessly, she got up and stumbled to the kitchen, nearly falling down the stairs.
"I swear. That kid's like a bad luck charm." She muttered, sitting down at the table. Frisk was sitting next to her, Cory in her lap. Frisk glanced at Chara, her eyes sparkling. Toriel set down a plate of eggs and bacon, smiling. Well, the plate was mostly bacon with some eggs. Chara shook her head, confused. Everyone was acting very strange, and Chara couldn't understand why.
Giving up on trying to understand, Chara started eating. After a few minutes, Frisk gave an exasperated laugh,"Did you really forget?"
Chara looked up sharply,"What?"
"Oh my gosh you idiot! You really amaze me sometimes. It's your birthday, doofus!"
"Woah, really?" She glanced at the calendar,"Huh. February 7th already? Time flies."
Frisk raised an eyebrow, making Chara sigh,"What did you expect? We've been busy."
"I guess. Uh, sorry we can't really do anything for it, I'm still kinda out of it."
"That's okay. I'll stay with you. I don't think we'll get bored, taking care of Cory and with the twins running around. Not to mention suspiciously acting goat boy over there."
Asriel had ran downstairs and was wolfing down his breakfast. He was still wearing the hat stretched over his horns, but now he had gloves on too.
"W-wha?" He stammered,"What's happening?"
"I could ask you the same thing. Anything you wanna tell us, Az?"
"N-no. I've gotta go."
With that, he ran off, leaving his plate half full of food. Chara watched him disappear before stealing his bacon. Frisk cast an annoyed glance at her, and Chara swallowed quickly,"What?"
"Aren't you worried about him? He's your brother, for Pete's sake."
"Well, yeah, of course I'm worried about him, but I've kinda got other things on my mind."
"I-I guess. I hope he's okay."
Frisk yawned and brought their plates to the sink. Chara picked up Cory and walked to the living room, Frisk following. Chara sat on the couch and pulled a chocolate bar from the bowl on the table. Sticking it in her mouth, she lifted Cory up, looking at him. He yawned and chirped, waving his pudgy little arms.
Chara giggled and poked his belly. She played for a while, and then noticed Frisk leaving, talking on her phone. After a few minutes, Frisk returned, taking Cory.
"Chara, I'm sorry, but I really need you to do something for me. That was the embassy, they need me to go to an urgent meeting."
"So you want me to watch Cory? I can do that."
"Actually, I need you to go to the meeting for me."
"What? Frisk, please don't make me."
"Chara, come on. Please." Frisk made puppy eyes at Chara.
"Ugh. Fine. I'll go."
"Thank you."
Chara rolled her eyes and stood up, grabbing her jacket.
Right before she walked out the door, Frisk called out,"Hey, don't say or do anything rash, okay?"
---
Chara sat down in the large wooden chair with a bronze plaque labeled 'Frisk Dreemurr- Ambassador' sitting in front of it. Asgore was at the other side of the table, but he was talking to some official looking guy. Chara sat on her hands and wiggled, slightly anxious. She had no idea what to expect, or what to say.
Feeling awkward just sitting around, Chara went to stand up, but just then some lady called the meeting to order.
"All right, everyone. Let's try to do this officially, okay. At the last meeting, we discussed several items that we will briefly go over today. First-"
A haughty looking man with gray eyes stood up,"Enough. I do not have the time to sit around and talk about trivial matters such as 'monster based jobs.' I have more important matters that require immediate attention."
"Um, sir, if you wouldn't mind-"
"Actually, I do mind. You all know who I am, correct?"
There was mainly some confusion and 'no' was heard quite a bit, but there was one or two 'yeses' by people with averted eyes.
"Well, I am Reigh Adams, founder and leader of Humanity's Only Hope."
Chara breathed in sharply, all of a sudden scared of this guy.
"Um, I find it kinda offensive that you call yourself that."
Reigh slowly turned and looked at the guy who had spoken, a thirty something man with dark hair.
"We call ourselves that," Reigh flicked his fingers, enveloping the guy in a thick purple smoke,"because we are."
"Reigh, enough. Let him go." A woman commanded, and Reigh sighed and waved his hand, which pulled away the smoke.
Chara couldn't help being amazed. A human with magic in this day and age.
"I suppose you all know what I want. It's what we all want, honestly. The monsters gone. Uh, no offense, your majesty."
"None taken." Asgore growled through gritted teeth.
Chara was flustered,"But, why? Monsters do-haven't done anything wrong t-to anybody!"
Reigh seemed amused,"I, ah, do not believe we have met. You're not Frisk, I assume."
"Chara."
"Of course. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Frisk yet. But I do know all about you. Now, about you saying monsters don't do bad, I was getting to that. My proposition is that if –and when– we prove that monsters don't deserve to be on the Surface because they are not good, everyone will agree that they will be put back into the Underground."
People whispered to their neighbors, and Chara was shocked by the overall answer.
"Okay. If you can prove that monsters are malicious, we agree to put them back Underground. We will follow through."
Chara was outraged. She turned to Asgore,"C-can they do that?"
His eyes were sad,"I am afraid that they can. If the majority of the board agrees, there's nothing we can do about it."
---
Chara stormed into the house and slammed the door, making everyone jump.
"Chara!" Frisk ran up to her,"What happened?"
Chara told her everything that had happened at the meeting. Frisk furrowed her eyebrows, breathing deeply.
"Can't we do something to stop them?"
"I don't think so, Chara. Monsters don't have much of a say in anything, so that doesn't help our chances. But the monsters won't do anything wrong. I know that."
"I don't know, Frisk. They've got something up their sleeves, and I don't think we can stop them."
