Chapter Three
When we woke up, there was pie on the table. Eight pieces. One for all of us. As we dug into the delicious dessert, I decided to talk to Sherry. She was kinda shy and stuttered a bit, but it was okay.
"What are you into?" I asked her.
"W-well, I'm into anime and science stuff," she stammered. "B-but my favorite is S-S-Sailor Moon. I love the c-characters a lot."
"Oh. That's cool! I like Pokemon. It's really that only one I like."
"OH!" Lauralin said with a full mouth of pie. "You are such a pika watcher."
"OH MY GOD!" Jessy yelled at her. "DO NOT!"
Everyone around us began to laugh at his temper. Well, except Luna. She was holding out her soul, and I noticed it went into a shade of light purple. I could hear it beating from across the room, and it sounded like a steady beat to a strange song. I could kinda hear a singer singing a song, too.
I'm borderline happy
And I'm borderline sad
I'm borderline good
And I'm borderline bad.
And I can't get rid of this tingling fear
You sought me out
And my head gets clear.
I live my life in shackles
But I'm borderline free.
I used to be blind
And I still can't see...
What was this song? I looked at her soul again, and it was also still cracked. However, I noticed something was leaking from it. It was a liquid, so it was dripping into Luna's hand. I scooted towards her.
"Hey, Frisk," she said while clasping the glowing heart in her hand and wiping off the liquid. "What's going on?" Her soul's light was seeping through her fingers, but it's rhythm could still be heard.
"What happened, Luna?" I asked, putting my plate down. "I fell down from that pit, and I still have my soul in perfect shape. Plus, even of you did fall on your own from that ceiling, it wouldn't have made that bad of cracks on the ground. Not unless you were hit by something... or someone."
"What are you getting at, Frisk?"
"You were attacked, weren't you?"
I didn't get an answer before Lauralin freakishly teleported and Alec stood up and ran out of the room with Jessy going after them. Everyone else got up and began following them to the living room. Toriel was reading her book and laughing at the three fighting.
"Alright you three," she said sweetly while pushing them apart. "Enough is enough."
"Toriel?" Luna said.
"Yes, my child?"
"You should've woken me up to help you bake the pie! I love baking all sorts of sweets."
"Oh, I'm so sorry, my child. Would you like to learn about what I'm reading?"
"Yes please!" she answered immediately.
"Okay," I replied. "What is the book about?"
"Well-" She got back in her chair and pushed her glasses up. "-It's facts about snails. Did you know that they can stay underwater for many months?"
She went on and on about the different facts. I personally liked the small pieces of information, same with Luna, but the others seemed bored. I saw Emily looking down at the staircase, and after a while of watching her, Toriel's eyes widened, and she got up from her chair.
"Wait here," she said.
"If you're thinking about destroying the entrance to the ruins," Laila spoke while running a hand through her hair. "Then you should just let us go, Darling."
But Toriel was already running towards the stairs.
One by one, we ran after her at our different paces. Even from her last experience, Luna swung from the surprisingly high ceiling. We stopped behind Toriel, who was facing this strange door. Luna dropped in front of her, and Toriel stepped back.
"Children," Toriel shouted. "Although you may understand what is beyond this door, it's still dangerous to go out there. Seeing what happened to you, Luna-" A tear dropped from her milky white face. "-I can't risk it."
"Toriel," Luna said softly. "Please. We need to get home. As much as we all love you... we can't stay here. We... we have to."
"Can't you give me an explanation?"
Luna looked down. "No... we can't."
Suddenly, the world became black and white. Toriel stood in front of all of us like she was going to fight. Her hands were in fists. Her expression wasn't angry, but it still held an intense look.
" If that is the case, then show me you are strong enough to survive," she said. "Only then, you'll be able to leave."
Suddenly, our souls came out of our chests. I looked to Luna, and it looked like the liquid wasn't leaking from her soul anymore. Toriel shot out these flames from her hands, and we all dodged them. For some reason, these four buttons appeared in front of me.
Fight
Act
Item
Mercy
I clicked Mercy, but Emily's hand went over my wrist.
"You can't spare her yet," she said. "You have to act first. You are not going to fight her."
"And I'm not going to," I replied. "I'll see what I can do."
The first thing on Act was talk. How in the world was I supposed to talk to Toriel? I wanted to see what was out there, yes, but what else can I talk about but saying I don't want to hurt her?
She then made the flames go in this zigzag pattern, and we all followed wear the flames didn't hit. I pressed Mercy this time, but she didn't do anything I went on and on again while I kept on sparing her. Each time, her face got more and more solemn.
"What are you doing?" She cried. "Fight me to leave!"
I kept on going and going by sparing her.
"GO AWAY!" she screamed.
All of her attacks then seemed to actually go away from us. They repelled.
"Please," she pleaded. "Go upstairs now. All of you."
I still spared her.
"I promise I'll take care of you here..."
Sparing her was all I did.
"I know we do not have much but... We can have a good life here."
I spared her again.
"Why are you making this so difficult? Please..." she was on the verge of tears. "Go upstairs."
I kept on doing what I was doing before.
"Ha ha," she laughed. "Pathetic, is it not? I cannot have even a single child."
Once I glanced over at Emily. She had the same set as I did.
"Emily," I said. "You try to use yours. Maybe she'll let us go!"
Her brown eyes lit up, and she pressed Mercy. Her spare option was yellow. She pressed it...
But nothing happened.
"W-w-what?" She gasped stuttered. "W-why isn't it working?"
"B-b-because..." Sherry whispered. "W-w-we need to spare our a-a-alternate versions."
"A-alternate versions?" I questioned.
"Luna," Toriel spoke. "My child, you are injured. A soul like that is too weak for the outside world."
"Mom-" Luna's voice cracked as she spoke while wiping away tears. "Please. I know you are worried about me, about us, but trust us on this. We know what we're doing."
Luna's tears spilled out as she embraced Toriel. Toriel began to cry, and the tears that spilled from her eyes made the world go back to color.
"Yes..." she said. "I understand. You would just be unhappy being down here. The Ruins are very small once you get used to them. It would not be right for you all to grow up in a place like this. My expectations, my loneliness, my fear... for you, my children, I will put them aside."
She wiped away her tears. I felt horrible for doing this, but I had to leave to get home. I had to. Didn't I?
"If you truly wish to leave the Ruins," she continued. "I will not stop you. However, when you leave, please do not come back. I hope you understand."
I ran up to her and gave her a big hug, too. Even though I've only known Toriel for a few moments, she was more to a mother to me than anything. Everyone else joined in the hug, and I heard something come back together. It sounded like glass breaking only backwards.
I opened my watery eyes to Luna's soul being put back together, but their was a visible, zigzagged line that went through it.
"I love you, Toriel," she whispered. "I won't forget you."
"Good bye, my children," she sobbed. "Be safe."
She walked off, but before she left us to ourselves, she looked behind her to see us. I looked over to Alec when Toriel was completely out of our sights, and she was clenching her fist.
"I... will not punch this wall!" she said. "I WANT TO PUNCH THIS FREAKING WALL!"
"Sometimes," Steven said while wiping his tears away. "Even though I'm a big crybaby, it's good to cry it out."
I couldn't argue with that.
