Chapter I: Last Stand
"Oh god, no. Undyne, no. No. NO! This can't be happening! This is impossible! Oh, god, Undyne NOOO!!!!"
There were no words to describe Alphys' emotions at that moment, watching Undyne the Undying give lie to her name, as the knife of the evil human Frisk was brought down upon her from her inexorable enemy. For almost a minute, Alphys simply watched her screen in shock, her eyes wide in disbelief. She couldn't move, couldn't talk, couldn't run, couldn't react, and, for the first time in her life, couldn't think. Eventually, the shock wore off and the sheer emotion sank in, and Alphys sank to the ground, sobbing.
Meanwhile, Frisk continued. They slew the Monster Kid, Muffet, and everything else in their path as they marched through the miles between them and the CORE. Alphys' former hope that the hotlands would give them pause proved to be completely unfounded, as Frisk marched directly through the hottest areas of the volcanic plain without flinching. Alphys hoped that perhaps the puzzles, lazers, and traps that guarded the entrance to the CORE would stop them. But it didn't. Finally, Alphys hoped against hope that the mighty Mettaton would be able to defeat the unflinching monster. But he couldn't, and in a few hours, Alphys had lost the last friend she had left. It was then, after she had ordered a mass evacuation into her true lab, that she contemplated suicide.
It wasn't a thought that came naturally to her. She was a logical, cool-headed person, if socially awkward and nervous. But under the circumstances, with Undyne and Mettaton dead, she had nothing left to hold on to. No hopes. No dreams. No DETERMINATION. She was alone in the world, the last woman standing against an unstoppable monster. And she had absolutely no idea what to do. The only thing that immediately came to her mind was ending her life. Hell, even the UnderNet was out. She couldn't even watch anime now.
But then she calmed down a little. And she began to think a bit more clearly. Why kill herself? Why the hell would she kill herself? Why not just kill it? That's what Undyne would have done. That's what Mettaton would have done. That's what Sans and Asgore were going to try to do. And that is what Alphys was going to do. That is what Dr. Alphys, Royal Scientist for King Asgore, was going to do. Why wouldn't she be able to bring down the human? Why wouldn't she be able to succeed where Undyne had failed? And there was a good answer to that question. She could.
And Frisk kept walking. They brought down every enemy in their parh, murdering brutally, until they finally reached the CORE. They had heard that there was another important one in here. They decided they were going to kill it. They decided they were going to have fun. Walking menacingly up the steps of the science lab, Frisk smiled widely. This one would be weak. It would be fun.
"Stop right there, human."
Frisk turned on their heel and looked behind them, seeing Alphys standing on a nearby balcony.
"Y-you had better give up before I have to make you give up."
Frisk only laughed
"You worthless monster. You think that you can kill me when the "legendary heroine" Undyne failed. You think that a dork like you can survive thirty seconds against me?"
Alphys smiled a bit at the wording.
"Its funny. That's true, I'm not even close to as strong as Undyne. But, as much as I hate to say anything bad about her ... she wasn't nearly as smart as me. And trust me. You are a hell of a lot dumber than either of us. Because it takes a real idiot to stand on a pressure plate for 90 seconds without noticing."
Frisk simply scowled at the wording as they tried to leap off the pressure plate without being affected by it's effects, but failed as several small needles stabbed into their feet.
"What was that supposed to do? Do you think a few tiny needles are going to stop me? Hell, I hardly noticed."
"All the more proof you're an idiot. I just injected you with millions of tiny nanobots linked directly to my brain."
Alphys smiled, and delivered her next line in a happy whisper.
"Top this, Sans."
Alphys' forehead scrunched up a bit as she concentrated on the connection between her and her mind and the nanobots now swimming through the human's bloodstream. Suddenly, Frisk screamed out in pain as electricity surged through their body, shocking lightning bolts burning along their torso. All at once, they began hovering in the air as Alphys telekinetically pulled their body upward by thier very bloodstream.
"See, it's like I always say. If magic isn't working for you, go with science! I'll teach you to murder Undyne and Papyrus. Now, DIE!"
Alphys clenched her hand into a fist and thrust downward, slamming Frisk into the ground, in the process reactivating the pressure plates and injecting them with even more of the nanobots, before lifting them back into the air, slamming them down into the ground, repeating until the hypodermic needles were completely out of their deadly liquid. By that time, the shocking had intensified vastly, and Frisk was feeling a pain worse than the Karmic Retribution that Frisks of other timelines would experience.
The cocky, self-satisfied smile that Alphys had been wearing throughout the entire battle had been replaced entirely with a scowl of infinite rage, the expression of one who has had everything and everyone taken from them and was been faced with the party guilty of taking it. Toriel was dead. Papyrus was dead. Mettaton was dead. Undyne... was dead. But she was not going to let any more of them die. Not one more. Not one. Their murderer stood right in front of her, and she wasn't going to let them get away. Not this time.
"YOU-"
Frisk screamed out in rage as Alphys continued smashing them against the floor, the ceiling, the walls, and everything in sight, at the same time constantly increasing the power of the electric charge that was incinerating the human's body. As more and more of them became singed, Alphys' rage increased exponentially, until she was literally seeing red, with no thoughts whatsoever but the fact that this murderer had to pay. She slammed Frisk again and again and again and again and again, the charge in the nanobots rising and rising.
"WORTHLESS-" *SLAM!* "PUNY-" *SLAM* "PATHETIC-" *SLAM!* "WEAKLING!!!" *CRASH!!!!*
Alphys wasn't paying attention. With each strike, Frisk's HP went down, with every shock, their monumental DETERMINATION begain to fail. And when it failed, it would be over. Undyne would be avenged. And the Underground would be safe.
Relatively so, anyway. Frisk's HP was incredibly low, and just a few more hits would finish them. Alphys lifted them one final time, prepared to bring them down, but suddenly failed, as they dropped rather harmlessly to the ground.
"Well... I... don't... quite... know... what... just... happened. But I do know that you're dead, Alphys. I'm going to kill you slowly."
"Oh my god. They overloaded. I used too much energy. I fried my own nanobots. I was so insane with my desire to bring you pain, I didn't do the thing that made sense. I'm no scientist. Undyne would have done better."
"I see. You finally admit it. Worthless. You're weak, and stupid. Who's the idiot now, eh? WHO!"
Frisk charged Alphys in an insane rage and thrust forward with the knife, impaling Alphys through the stomach.
"Now you die, freak. Of all the monsters, never have I ever killed one so useless. Never something like you."
"Heh- thanks kid. You're making my life a whole lot more interesting. Magic failed. Technology failed. What do I have left? I'll tell you what I have left, kid. I have my SOUL. And I. Am. Not. Giving. That. Up. To. You. This ends here, human. I'm going to put a stop to your rampage. Once. And for all."
Alphys was filled with DETERMINATION.
Suddenly, Frisk felt their knife shakinf, before it flew out of their hands, and out of Alphys' gut, lodging in a far wall. Frisk turned quicklt and rushed to retrieve it, but was interrupted by Alphys grabbing them by the shoulder.
"You aren't getting away that easily. I AM THE UNDERGROUND'S LAST HOPE!"
Alphys punched Frisk in the stomach, staggering him.
"You beat Undyne the Undying, you could walk through Asgore!"
The monster followed up the attack with another, punching Frisk across the face.
"And Sans wouldn't interfere, no matter what happened."
She attacked again, smashing her fists, now charged with yellow energy, into Frisk's gut.
"And there's no one else to stop you."
Finally, Alphys stepped backward, allowing the wall behind her to shift and morph into a laser beam device, a result of her newfound power, as one of her glasses began to glow bright white.
"Except for me."
The beam fired, incinerating one of Frisk's arms.
"And human..."
Alphys turned the ground beneath him to a floor of shocking traps, the electricity once again surging through Frisk's body.
"No matter what..."
Alphys snapped her fingers, instantly reactivating the nanobots within Frisk's bloodstream, thereby lifting him into the air.
"You will never, never, NEVER come back. Goodbye... Frisk."
Alphys took one more look at the dying human, before her glasses lens flashed white one final time and she finished it. Transforming the entire building into an extension of the CORE, Alphys shoved Frisk directly into the works, rending their body from their SOUL. And, finally, as DETERMINATION threatened to force the two objects back together, one a red SOUL, touched by cracks and tendrils of black, the other a beaten, broken body, Alphys built a massive version if the DT Extraction machine, ripping the DETERMINATION from Frisk's body, destroying any chance of a RESET or LOAD. Finally, Alphys stepped away from the machine, launched it, and the rest of Frisk high to the very tip top of Mt. Ebbot, and caused it to explode in an incredible flare of energy.
But along with the fiery explosion, the pieces of shrapnel, and the pieces of SOUL, fell something else. Frisk's pure DETERMINATION fell from the sky, ripped out of the DT Extractor when the device detonated. As the strange, unidentifiable energy fell slowly from the sky, seeding itself inside the dust that now covered much of the Underground, a miracle happened.
Frisk had tried to destroy the Underground.
But it refused.
