The Voice
Frisk followed her out of the room. There was a doorway in the cave she hadn't noticed before. It was carved directly from the stalactites. It was a work of art.
Toriel led her through mazes and puzzles. Guided her through. She taught her how to complete them, and Frisk followed her lead. Frisk always completed the puzzles with ease. Not any harder than school work. In one of the hallways, Toriel stopped.
"You have done excellently this far, my child." Toriel smiled. "However......" she trailed off.
Frisk was nervous. She looked at Toriel. She was getting acquainted with her, and she was happy to be with her. A feeling she hadn't felt in a long time. Frisk gave Toriel a big flashy smile. She hadn't done that in a while either. Toriel's sad expression seemed to lighten.
"... I have a difficult request to ask of you. I would like you to walk to the end of the room by yourself. Forgive me for this." She hurried off without another word. Frisk hesitated for a moment.
Frisk, confused, rushed after her. Frisk started with a fast walk, until she heard a noise behind her. She picked up the pace and started to sprint. Frisk didn't stop, even though her scars were starting to open. Even though pain shot through her legs. She didn't feel safe without Toriel. David can't get you down here. Frisk ran anyways. She arrived at the end of the room and found a big white pillar off to the left. Frisk stopped running.
Frisk panted and put her hands on her knees. Her legs couldn't take much more. Frisk took a step towards the pillar and heard rustling behind it. She jumped back. Toriel peered around the pillar and looked relieved.
"Greetings my child. Do not worry, I did not leave you. I was merely behind this pillar the whole time."
Toriel had a smug look on her face, like she has outsmarted Frisk. Frisk managed a small smile between heavy breaths.
"Thank you for trusting me. However, there was an important reason for this exercise."
Frisk was feeling better now, and had a chance to catch her breath. She was glad to be back with her goat friend. Goat mom. Frisk was surprised by the thought. But Frisk liked goat mom, it had a ring to it. She kept the name.
"To test your independence." Toriel said, grabbing Frisk from her thoughts.
"I must attend to some business, and you must stay alone for a while. Please remain here. It is dangerous to explore by yourself."
Frisk was sad she had to leave, but nodded anyway. She didn't want to lose her trust, she was the only friend she had down here. And it wasn't like she had anything better to do. Just a couple of hours ago she tried to kill her self.
"I have an idea. I will give you a CELL PHONE. If you have a need for anything, just call. Be good, alright?"
Toriel left, without so much as a goodbye hug. Frisk was all alone. She looked down at the old phone Toriel gave her. It was a Nokia. Of course it is, only a Nokia would have survived that long fall. Frisk turned it on. Cute little music played which led her to the home screen. It was blank.
Frisk sat for hours on end, waiting for Toriel. Toriel had given her a couple of calls, saying she would be late. Frisk was getting bored. She was trying to remember where "Underground" was from. She searched the depths of her memory. But nothing came to mind.
Underground. The underground. The ruins. Humans and monsters. Barrier.
What? Where did that come from.....
Frisk paused. It all made sense. It was a Chapter in her history book, just a few small pages. All they really said was that humans fought monsters and humans won. Then it said something about a barrier, locking them underground. No one really ever knew if it was true, so no one talked about it. It was a myth you told at campfire. It wasn't real.
Frisk shook her head. This can't be real. It's all just dream. Frisk remembered just less than a month ago about a story of a monster killing a human. Supposedly one came to.... what should it be called? Above ground? But they came to the surface with a dead kid. Loads of people say they tried to kill it, but it just walked away.
Frisk didn't believe them. They were all too scared to do that. Frisk looked up. That door that Toriel left through was still there. It was wide open. Go through. "I told Toriel I would stay here." Frisk whispered to herself.
You stayed because you had nothing better to do. Now you know where this is. Go. Frisk tried to argue with the logic but couldn't think of anything. She slowly picked herself off the floor and walked through the door.
Frisk looked around. There was a frog to her left and- It's a Froggit.
Frisk stood still. "Who's there?" She slowly moved her head in all directions. Oh! How rude of me. I'm another thought in your brain. I'm here to help you.
I thought this was my thoughts. You really don't know how it works. I am voice number 2. Everybody has one. I don't want one. Well, too bad.
Frisk shoved the voice from her head. She slowly made her way up to the Froggit. "Ribbit. Ribbit." Excuse me human. I have some advice for you about battling monsters. If you ACT a certain way or FIGHT until you almost defeat them... They might not want to battle you anymore. If a mister does not want to fight you, please, Use some mercy, human. Ribbit.
Frisk was surprised. How do I know that? It's me. You're a part of me too. You don't count. Frisk mumbled something under her breath. I can hear that too. I know, that was the point.
Frisk stomped away from the Froggit and came to pile of crimson leaves. She walked into it, feeling the leaves on her skin. They were kind of like the ones on the surface, but brighter, and softer too. Frisk forgot about the voice and started to play in the leaves. She needed to take her mind off things.
She threw the leaves in the air, and they all rained back down. It reminded her of home. Home before sis went down Mt. Ebott. The leaves made her feel safe, and for a moment, she let her guard down. She giggled and smeared dirt on her face. She then reached over with her muddy hand and swiped in the air.
She was expecting to hit her sister, and squish the mud everywhere. But sis wasn't there. Of course she wasn't. Frisk came back to reality and lowered her hand. She wiped the mud off and put her guard back up.
You're gonna make it. I know you will. Frisk was glad that her thoughts were becoming happier. They weren't telling her to jump or anything. Frisk took a look around and saw a shiny gold star amongst the leaves she was in. She picked it up.
A tiny voice said aloud " Playfully crinkling through the leaves fills you with determination. HP fully restored." A bell sounded through the whole cave, echoing off the walls. Determination. Determination.
Frisk ventured on.
