Free (Two Year Anniversary Special)
Turtle Side Note- Happy Birthday Undertale... and thank you, Toby Fox, for creating the game that changed my life for the better.
It has been two years of freedom.
Frisk looked out their window as the sun rose, thinking to themself. Maybe... Maybe two years wasn't truly a lot in the long run, but the date of today was the most important date of their life.
It was the day, that two years ago, they found their new family and set them free.
It was the day that their friends' dreams came true, the first day in their entire lives that most of them had seen the sun. It was also the first day the elder monsters like Toriel, Asgore, and Gerson were reunited with the surface.
Frisk will never forget the look on all their faces.
The ones who were hopeless were filled with wonder and new life. And the ones who already held their head high now had a reason to hold it even higher.
The day they became free will forever hold a huge place in their hearts, but Frisk knew that there was another part of that day that they gained something different than the others did... something more.
Frisk knew that they had found a home. Not a place to live, but a home.
A word so simple, yet it held so much meaning.
In one day, they had learned what it meant to have a home. A home was something you had to love for. Something you had to have mercy to earn. Something you had to be willing to spare yourself for. Something you had to heal others' wounds to keep them in it too. Something you had to fight for, or even take action to keep close. Something you had to have forgiveness to remember how dear it truly is to you. Maybe sometimes... you'd even have to let go of things you loved to have it. But, most importantly, you needed to know how to save it.
And that, might have been the most touching part of it.
The monsters who had come into Frisk's life were the people they wanted to share their home with. Each of them teaching Frisk, in their own ways, what the word home meant.
Home wasn't a place.
Home was a person. Well... home was a group of persons.
It was the group of people who had entered Frisk's life, and no matter where they went Frisk knew they were still in their hearts. Toriel, Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, Alphys, and Asgore.
Toriel, Asgore, and Papyrus had all remained at their house. Papyrus was still in school just like Frisk was, and Toriel and Asgore had actually managed to get back together and took care of both Frisk and Papyrus.
Sans and Alphys were traveling, as they managed to make a huge mark with their combined intelligence, blowing away scientists worldwide. Their use of magic mixed with modern science opening huge gateways in the scientific world. Frisk hadn't seen either of them in months. But they kept in touch, despite the fact that Alphys had broken their phones twice from certain ramen noodle incidents.
Undyne had actually become almost like a military mascot for the monsters. After monsters had gained full rights, she went off to the military, quickly gaining the position of training the newbies. People hoped that one day, with more monster based tactics, that the country they lived in would soon become the military powerhouse it once was. It had been nearly a year since anyone had even heard Undyne's voice. She sent cards and messages through the internet, but she could never manage to get a proper call through.
Frisk sighed, as they watched the sun brighten.
It was truly a beautiful day outside.
The birds were singing, their voices being carried through the morning air.
The flowers still had blossoms, their sweet smell drifting through the wind.
Days like this, were truly days to be celebrating.
Their door creek open, causing Frisk to turn, seeing Toriel walk into the room. She looked startled to already see them awake, before her expression immediately softened back to how it usually was. "Good morning, my child." She smiled, "I was about to wake you up, but it appears you got ahead of me." She laughed, making Frisk grin.
Toriel cleared her voice, "Anyways, my child, I suppose you know what day it is since you are normally still asleep by now." Her smile widened as Frisk nodded 'yes' excitedly. Toriel continued, "Now... can you guess what I made for this special occasion?" She said, with a smile that looked like she was holding back a laugh.
Frisk sniffed the the air.
The smell of butterscotch-cinnamon pie filled the room.
They gasped, hopping off of their bed. They ran towards their adoptive mother, only for her to stop them.
"Now, now!" She exclaimed, "Before you go and ransack my kitchen, there's a surprise for you at the front door, my child."
Frisk looked at their adoptive mother, utterly puzzled. They furrowed their brows together in confusion, before signing to the goat, "What do you mean?"
Toriel smiled brightly, "Why don't you go down and see for yourself, my child?" She then stepped out of the way to allow Frisk to pass through.
Frisk still held a confused face, before they slowly passed the boss monster. They made their way down the stairs, and turned into the front hall that led to their front door. The glared down the dark, red, door, unsure of what was supposed to be their surprise.
The human jumped in surprise, two loud, firm, knocks snapping them from their confused thoughts.
Their jaw gaped before quickly turning into a wide smile as a low, familiar, voice came through from the other side of the door. "knock knock."
Frisk immediately swung open the door, seeing Alphys and Sans standing there. Alphys looked like she was about to say something, only for the small human to quickly tackle both of them in a hug, sending the trio straight to the ground.
Frisk squeezed them both, in probably one of the most awkward hugs they had given in their whole life. This hug wouldn't have been made as awkward if it had happened two years earlier, when Frisk wasn't a whole head taller than both of them. But that didn't matter, Frisk was just happy that they were home.
Alphys had her face covered with her hands, murmuring something about being nearly scared out of her skin, but she was talking too fast and too quietly to be understood by anyone.
Sans, on the other hand, recuperated from the surprise tackle almost immediately, chuckling under his breath before saying, "hey, kid, you're suppose' to say 'who's there?'"
Frisk pushed themself off of the two smaller beings, rolling their eyes and sticking their tongue out at the skeleton.
Alphys slowly moved her claws away from her eyes, still looking a bit stunned.
"ya good, al?" Sans asked. He sat up, looking over at the dinosaur raising a questioning brow.
Alphys blinked twice before speaking up, "Y-yes? I think? Maybe... probably...?" She then shook her head, sitting up too. Frisk giggled at her, making her smile awkwardly at the human, "L-long time, no see?" Alphys stuttered, her shoulders raising slightly as if she was unsure about her statement.
Frisk exaggerated a nod, signing, "It's been months!"
A loud voice suddenly boomed behind Frisk, causing both Frisk and Alphys to jump, Sans' face however lit up as the owner the voice walked up behind Frisk, "ACTUALLY, HUMAN, IT'S BEEN EIGHT MONTHS, TWENTY-THREE DAYS, THIRTEEN HOURS, ELEVEN MINUTES AND..." The being stopped talking, looking at a watch on their wrist, "AND THIRTY-NINE SECONDS!"
"'sup, paps?" Sans said, seeming to be trying to sound as casual as possible, even though his face looked like it was going to break if he smiled any wider.
Papyrus smiled back, not being surprised to see Sans, as he was expecting his company. He put his hands on his hips before saying, "I DON'T KNOW BROTHER, BUT WHAT IS UP WITH YOU?"
Sans shrugged as he said, "eh, not much now 'cause i'm stuck on the ground."
"BROTHER? ARE YOU SERIOUSLY TOO LAZY TO STAND UP?!" Papyrus yell back at his brother, throwing his arms out in an exaggerate manner.
"yup." Sans said simply, still smiling like a complete idiot.
"WELL, THEN YOU LEAVE ME NO CHOICE BROTHER..." Papyrus began, as he walked towards Sans, "I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO..." He paused, creating a dramatic air before he suddenly scooped Sans off the ground, hugging him, "-BRING YOU INTO THE KITCHEN SO YOU CAN TRY MY NEW SPAGHETTI! I HAVE IMPROVED SO MUCH WHILE YOU WERE GONE! YOU WILL BE SPEECHLESS!"
Sans laughed, winking, "i bet i will be. everything you do is the coolest after all."
"OF COURSE IT IS BROTHER!" Papyrus said, before letting off a victorious laugh, dashing off into the kitchen with Sans.
Sans quickly called back to Frisk before he was whisked away and out of ear-shot, "i'll catch up with ya later, kid!"
Frisk just covered their mouth laughing at the brother's shenanigans, before turning to Alphys who was also laughing.
Alphys looked up at Frisk, sweating nervously, "W-well, I suppose we sh-should get insi--" She was suddenly cut a off, a voice behind her. Alphys yipped in surprise, before turning around.
"Aw, man, did I miss the big entrance, nerds?"
Alphys' nervous expression quickly changed to overjoyed as she saw who was standing there, "Undyne!" She screamed, before jumping into Undyne's arms, nearly knocking the soldier off her feet.
Undyne laughed, looking down lovingly into Alphys' eyes, "Hey, missed you too, babe." She leaned in to kiss her lover, Frisk's eyes going wide as they held back their inner fangirl.
"Ahem." Behind Frisk appeared the two past rulers of the Underground, both of them with their arms crossed, glaring at the two lovers.
"No showing romantic affection in front of children." Toriel scolded, wagging her finger.
"Indeed, we don't need to corrupt the young ones." Asgore chuckled under his breath as Undyne stood back up straight, seeming to be annoyed that she couldn't get a kiss in.
Frisk's brows furrowed, their face turning into a pout, "Mommmm, Daaad." they crossed their arms.
Toriel laughed, "Be patient, my child, one day we will allow you to see and do such things."
Asgore looked at Toriel peculiarly, "We will?"
Toriel smiled, seeming a bit sly, "They have to grow up eventually, Gory."
Asgore shook his head, "I suppose I cannot argue with that, love." He said, pecking her on the cheek.
"HEY!?" Undyne yelled, nearly dropping Alphys in the process, "HOW COME YOU GET TO BE LOVEY-DOVEY, AND I CAN'T?"
Frisk signed, "Senior points."The child seemed nearly as annoyed as Undyne was.
Undyne rolled her eye, mumbling something under her breath. She then looked towards the two goat monsters again, readjusting Alphys in her arms, "Anyways, nerds, I think there are two numbskulls that I still need to beat up in that house." She said, her eye flashing as her toothy smile was shown.
"O-Oh no-" Alphys stammered.
"Oh yes." Frisk signed, almost on reflex.
Undyne burst into laughter, before calling out a 'NGAH!', leaping over Frisk, squeezing through the two boss monsters, then running towards the kitchen with Alphys squealing the whole way through. Soon after, loud crashes and shouts of surprise were heard.
"Oh dear-!" Toriel blurted, covering her muzzle with her paw before she too ran into the kitchen to check on everyone.
Frisk and Asgore were left alone.
Asgore chuckled, before he then looked down at Frisk with a softer expression, "Young one, there is something I've been meaning to say to you." He glanced to the side, his old, worn, form seeming to relax a little.
Frisk stood up before looking up at the goat, raising a brow at him, "What is it?" They signed.
"Thank you for everything." He smiled kindly, his green eyes sparkling, reminding Frisk of another monster that they had to let go of so long ago, "I would have never found happiness again without you."
Frisk mirrored his smile, hugging the goat. They spoke in a soft voice that they rarely used, "Anything for family."
Asgore hugged them back, before pulling away. He knelt down to their level, talking in his sweet, soft, voice, "Now, I must ask. Would you like a cup of tea? It's not much for such a big day, but it's still enjoyable."
Frisk smiled, knowing that this was their family. This was their home.
The child nodded, more than willing to drink tea all day with their loved ones. The boss monster rose to his full height, a bitter-sweet smile on his face as he spoke, "Let us go then." The child took his hand, before heading off towards the kitchen to catch up with the rest, then settle down for a cup of tea.
Frisk was happy.
They had a home.
And their story had no end.
This would forever be...
their Undertale.
