10 ~ Snow

Being with Papyrus and Sans was like living with two big brothers. Papyrus had that glorious aura that surrounded him, and such a genuine laugh that was so contagious. Sans had a chuckle to his laugh, but if you loved puns a such as I did, he could have you keeled over laughing while Papyrus yelled at Sans. Papyrus was never mad at Sans though, you could tell they really loved each other's company even though they bickered a lot.

I have now lived with the Skeleton brothers for about a week and a half now. It's quite the expirience.

Papyrus found out I was a human not long after I joined the household, and I had to sit in the shed for awhile before Sans got me out. He took me to Grillby's and let me sit on my first whoopie cushion, and get pranked by spraying ketchup. It was better than the cold shed honestly. Grillby was so nice too, even though he didn't talk much.

Sans, let's just say, doesn't let anything past him. It's like he can read anyone like a preschool book, with his laid back and humorous attitude it's almost like he's the brother that would sit you down and have a long emotional talk. The brother that would listen. He let off such an easygoing aura it's hard not to get attached to him. Punny and easy going.

Sans would wake up really late, eat the breakfast Papyrus would make and comment on his cooking getting better every day, and do sentry duties. I would find him sleeping everytime I'd pass him on my walks around town to get used to the area.

Papyrus on the other hand, is such a goof ball type brother. He gave awesome hugs and always asked how your day was in such a happy way. He was the brother that would give you something you like if you were down, and cheer you up with an energizing pep talk.

He was the type of skeleton that would wake up at ungodly hours of the morning, cook spaghetti from scratch, then go to sentry duties AND one on one training with Captian Undyne of the Royal Guard. Anytime I'd see him outside the house, he'd be marching around with such confidence in himself. The tall skeleton boasted about being in training under the best, and I encouraged him to do his best. Papyrus would come home the same as ever, as if he had lost no energy at all. He would feed Sans' pet rock with sprinkles, have spiel about Sans not picking up the one sock, chase around a white haired dog, cook dinner, then go to bed at 7pm something to do it all over again. Energy and confidence.

And, to be honest, I really liked being here.

I sat on the couch (that was my bed at night) with a pencil I brought with me from the Ruins. I wanted to draw something, but I couldn't think of what. I sat, my mind swirling with things to decide on, until I realized what I could draw.

My mind wandered to my human mom, and it left sour taste. Though I didn't want to forget her face, I decided it was her I should draw. Getting to work, I imagined the most genuine smile she made, working out her facial structure and eyes. I outlined her hairstyle in the usual ponytail, sweeping her bangs over her soft eyes. With a 'stroke' of luck, I nailed her smile so well it made my heart ache just how far I've gotten.

Erasing a stray sketch line, I glance up to see Sans coming down the stairs.

"Whatcha doin, kiddo? Drawing again?" Sans crashes on the couch next to me as I nod in response. I keep sketching as hoodie-clad skeleton peers over, watching my pencil draw in the glow in my mother's eyes.

"Who is this?"

My pencil stops. I set it down carefully and sign simply, 'mother.' Sans hums as I go back to drawing.

Sans sits in silence as he watches me draw, always non-judgemental. The thought made my heart twist as I remembered mom being the same way. Something swelled in my chest, and it wasn't a good feeling. It ached a little, and I couldn't push the feeling down.

A drop hit the page.

"Kiddo?" Sans' question brought me up out of my daze.

I blink and feel warm tears coming down my cheek. Gripping the pencil in my hand tightly, I furiously rubbed away the salty water from my face and eye.

'I'll be okay,' I signed shakily, preparing to draw again before a bony hand went over my own, gently taking the pencil from me. My eye traveled to Sans, his expression even with the smile looked...concerned.

"Hey..." Sans started, "that wasn't 'okay'."

I gave him a questioning look.

"I dunno what's bothering you, but that phrase," Sans explained quietly, "is something you use a lot...I've noticed."

I processed his words and more tears slipped down my face. I absentmindedly rubbed at them. Sans looked conflicted, but continued anyway.

"Kid...listen to me," Sans put a hand on my shoulder, "I know this'll be hard on you, but please remember we're here to talk if you need it."

I sniffled, seeing my dad's and Flowey's menacing faces side by side in my mind's eye.

"You don't have to face it alone."

I frowned, while Sans cocked a brow-bone.

"Ya get me?"

'I got you,' I replied silently after a moment, a small smile on my face.

"Right then," Sans stood and stretched, "I'm gonna take a snooze. You'll probably find Pap at one of his puzzles if you need anything."

For a second I looked back to my sketchbook to study mom's face, then looked back up to watch Sans go up the stairs.

He was already gone.

-------------------------------------------

The cold bit at my face with ice cold fangs, pouring into my core and solidifying my joints, aching when I moved.

I happened to walk out right in the middle of a snowstorm, looking for Papyrus. I had my yellow sweater I've come to like and my red coat over it completely buttoned up and hood over my face as far as possible. I borrowed Sans' gloves and they acted as a second barrier along with my deep coat pockets.

Still, somehow, the cold wormed it's way into me.

I could only walk around and look for him since I couldn't shout the tall skeleton's name to help. Suddenly stepping in a deep section of snow, I almost lost my balance.

Gaining back the ability to stand straight, I realized that I stood in one of the puzzles Sans showed me on my way to Snowdin. It was one where you had to find the button between trees or whatever.

Confidence rising a bit, I walk a little faster through the snow.

Jeez, this snow is so thick I can barley see three feet in front of me...

Tripping a little, I steady myself against a tree, the snow coming down at an unpleasant angle. As I caught my breath, I heard something alike to a voice, making me stop short. I listened over the winds and snow, hearing the voice again.

"REID? WHERE ARE YOU?" The voice was far away.

Papyrus!

My heart lept, taking a step towards the voice in earnest.

I expected snow to crunch, but what I got was empty air. My mouth gave an airy yelp of surprise, falling forward and my heart skipping a beat.

Just then, after a mini heart attack, something or someone gripped the back of my coat, yanking me back. I stumbled backwards into the somebody who had my coat, narrowly avoiding toppling over in the thick snow. I gasped in relief, and looked to who saved me.

No one was there.

I did a double take, and looked around to see if they had started to walk off in a direction.

Nothing.

With the largest 'wtf' expression I could muster, I looked at the edge I almost fell off of. Gulping, I shrunk back, realizing how close I was to death once more. It was too deep to see the bottom.

"REID?"

Papyrus was farther away. My heart dropped in my chest, realizing he was going away from where I was.

Carefully making my way around the cliff, I worked through the snow, hustling towards Papyrus's voice. The snow made my face numb and the wind made my eyes water.

Rubbing my eyes, I opened them to see Papyrus's back to me, his movements suggesting he was looking for something...or me.

Well, I shouldn't keep him waiting.

Pumping my legs, I broke into a sprint and made sure to make some noise over the wind storm of snow, snapping a branch in my path. The tall skeleton whipped around to look towards me, his face turning from confusion to bright like it always was. I barely registered my hood was flung off my head.

It didn't last, for at the last second I saw a ten foot wide crack in the cliff between us, and I was going to fast to stop. Papyrus's face dropped to realization.

"HUMAN! SLOW DOWN, YOU'LL FALL!" Papyrus shouted, running towards me on the other side.

It was too late to try to slide to a stop, I could fly right off the edge.

With quick thinking but not exactly thinking straight, I decided in a split second moment I would try to cross the gap. With the strength I had left, I pushed hard on my last step on the edge of the cliff and launched myself across the empty space. I almost flew through the air, Papyrus running up to meet me at the other side. With a skip of a beat in horror, I knew I wouldn't make it.

As I missed the other side my a meter, Papyrus stretched his arm the rest of the way and grabbed onto my extended arm, dropping down onto his hand and knees with his arm attatched to me by death grip over the edge.

Holy f*ck I made it. Barely, because of Papyrus.

I wheezed a gasp of air. Relief.

"HUMAN...!" Papyrus strained, "I'LL GET YOU UP! THE GREAT PAPYRUS IS HERE TO SAVE YOU...!"

Papyrus got ahold of my other arm with his, pulling me up quite easily until I stood on solid ground once more. I felt drained.

"THERE WE ARE! SAFE AND SOUND," Papyrus brushed off some snow off of my now exposed hair. To return the favor, I tiredly brushed off some snow from his vibrant red scarf.

'Can we go home?' I signed to Papyrus. He gave me a confused look. I huffed in embarrassment, realizing he didn't understand sign language all that much, or what they call it down here 'speaking in hands'.

Fabricating some gestures, I pointed the way back to Snowdin.

"BACK?"

I placed my hands over my head, like a circle shape with my arms.

"SHELTER? WHAT A GREAT IDEA! WE BETTER GET OUT OF THIS SNOWSTORM BEFORE IT GETS WORSE! COME ALONG HUMAN!"

The energetic skeleton started marching, but I couldn't even begin to trod behind him. Everything was so cold, but so hot at the same time. I was sweating, and I was extremely dizzy. After taking a wobbily step after the skeleton, I limply fell into the snow. Papyrus doubled back, hearing me.

"AH, YOU MUST BE TIRED. HERE," Papyrus hoisted me up easily, brushed the snow off, and propped me on his back, "I'LL CARRY YOU!"

I uselessly become a mass of tired on the skeleton's back as Papyrus generously gave me a piggy back ride without a second thought. Lazily wrapping my arms around his neck loosely I relaxed my head on his shoulder, feeling fatigued, dizzy, sweaty, and overall gross. Shaking with cold, I jumped at Papyrus's booming voice right next to my ear.

"YOU'RE VERY LIGHT, HUMAN! MORE SO THAN MY BROTHER. THEN AGAIN, YOU DON'T GO TO GRILLBY'S AS OFTEN AS HE DOES. HIS EATING HABITS COULD USE SOME WORK, AS WITH YOURS," I try to listen to what he was saying, "YOU'VE EATEN SO LITTLE SINCE YOU GOT HERE, AT LEAST THE BARE MINIMUM. IT SIMPLY WON'T DO! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL NOT STAND FOR IT!"

'Then sit down,' I would sign, but I was too tired to sign. He couldn't understand me anyway.

He continued to babble on as I started to drift off, feeling so hot and gross nothing can begin to explain what I was feeling. I began to shake more, Papyrus becoming white noise and his rythymic fashion of walking lulling me into darkness.
