Chapter 3: Run. They will shoot you.

TW: slight panic
Angst
major confusion

-----------------------

"What is that?"

"What are you even asking, it's a monster of course!"

"Or an Alien."

"Did you miss the news?"

"What news?"

Distant voices made their way to Reak's mind, slowly waking from their painful slumber.

"Ladies and gentlemen, let the police handle this, please."

"Listen to the police. What if it attacks us?"

What was going on? Confusion. They were confused. Why did their chest hurt? It hurt. It hurt a lot. Where were they? outside? It's warm. Very warm.

"IT MOVED!"

Why is he scared? What was going on?

"WAIT, THIS IS NOT A PRANK!?"

Prank? What prank?

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!?"

That? That what?

"I TOLD YOU TO STAY AWAY! IT'S ONE OF THOSE MONSTERS TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE UNIVERSE!?"

What? Monsters? Take over the universe?

"Please calm down, everyone. We have everything under control.", a female voice said calmly, but a hint of panic evident in their speech.

"Ugh", the teen groaned, forcing their orbs to open, only to be met with bright colors and light. They forced their sensitive eyes shut again, blinking a few times. The voices grew clearer by the second, reality slowly setting in the teens mind.

"SHOULD WE FLEE?"

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN FLEE?"

"THIS IS THE WORST PRANK EVER!"

"Please calm yourselves. As my college said before, we have everything under control."

Reak opened their eyes fully, looking around disoriented. There were people everywhere, circling them. And the police? What did the police do there? And why did it feel so warm all of a sudden? It hurt.

"IT'S LOOKING AT US!!", a male said in panic. Reak looked at the brunette with a questioning gaze. Though, the crowd didn't grow quieter, but only louder and louder, unsettling the teen that was being encircled.

watched the police looking at them cautiously. They didn't do anything wrong, right? They didn't break the law? So why was the police here?

And why did their body hurt?

The policewoman and man exchanged two glances, nodding, while one started a conversation carefully. "Excuse us,... But could we ask you to come with us?", she asked, making Reak focus on her. The teen looked at the woman in question.

"Uh-", they started, cutting themselves off mid reply. That didn't sound correct.

Their voice..
Their voice!
Their voice was different!

Why was it different?
What was going on?
Their chest hurt.
Where were they?
Why were they on the streets?
It hurt.
Why was the police here?
Why were people panicking?
Wh-

Breathe... Reak reminded themselves to breathe...

One thing at a time...

The teen breathed in slowly, counting out loud, as to focus on something else than the panic around them, flinching at their deeper voice at times. The teen closed their eyes, reassuring them that they were fine.

Because... they were...

Were they?

They had nothing to worry about!

But the police-

THEY HAD NOTHING...... to worry about.

Reak opened their eyes again, looking around for anything familiar. The houses did. Apparently they are in the nearby neighborhood of their house. And there was an instrument case beside them. It was their cello's. Why was it there?

The teen looked around some more, watching the people around them. The police managed to calm them down relatively, though some seemed to be in trouble. Or maybe it was some

Why were they crying?

The 15-year-old watched the crowd, looking for someone that could explain the situation to them. Perhaps they would make sense of the situation then! Reakstared at the small crowd around them, some even taking videos by now. There were many people they didn't know. There were many unfamiliar brunettes and blonde. A few kids here and some elderly there.

And then there was Reak's family.

...

Their family?

The teens eyes shone brightly at the recognition, their smile widening with ease. They almost called out to them, searching for answers they didn't get themselves, until they saw their father's face.

Their father had tears in his dark blackish orbs, his facial expression showing nothing but anger.

Anger? Tears?

Reak's family, upon closer inspection, were all crying. Their mother, their siblings, their father. Everyone.

But, why?

And why were they talking to a police officer?

Reak's father stared at their child with anger all of a sudden, him nodding along to the police.

It scared the 15-year-old.

Sucking in a deep breath, the teen avoided their gaze unto their lap. But, to their surprise, they found themselves in long black pants, and brown boots.

"Huh..?", looking up they wore a white long sleeved shirt and a vest with a blue flower embroidery on the left chest's single pocket. The teen wore some grey 2-finger gloves.

The outfit was too warm. They felt too warm.

Reak was confused as their focus no longer on their surroundings.

Why were they wearing such clothes?
When did they even buy these?
Are they theirs?

"GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM!"

Reak's head shot up in panic at some loud lady's voice, waking them from their trance.

"Yeah! And don't come back!"

"Disappear you monster!"

"LEAVE US ALONE!"

Before they even knew it, multiple people were shouting at them, screaming at them.

To leave.

The teen smiled nervously, a few tears leaving their face by doing so.

"GO AWAY!!"

What did they even do wrong?

"You shouldn't exist!"

Was ist Punishment?

"DIE!!!"

Was it judgment for the sins they didn't know they committed?

"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY CHILD!?"

Reak's lowered head shot back up again.

That was their father's voice!

But upon seeing his face and realizing what he had said was towards themself, they broke down into more tears.

After all, how could a lovely parent like him not recognize them? His child. His 15-year-old. His family.

Reak attempted to speak, "...", but they could only cough as their throat felt tense and their vocals hurt.

The shouting and screaming continued and the teen couldn't help but feel like running away. They wanted to disappear and never return to all of this. All of this confusion. All of this pain. All of this hate.

The police made an effort to try and calm the crowd, but when one of the police officers pointed their gun at the teen, the crowd went wild and grew louder and louder.

Reak stared at the gun pointed at them, not even taking in that another police officer tried to stop the one pointing it toward them.

They just stared at the gun scared for their life.

But, through this simple feeling of fear that intensified by the second, their body tensed up and adrenaline kicked in.

Reak jumped into the nearby crowd as fast as they could, the surprised people shrieking in fear.

A gunshot sounded at that.

.
.
.

But it did not hit.

The teen didn't look back, staring forward and forward only, running through the little alleyway and to the nearby streets.

Sirens sounded from not so far behind, them getting slightly quieter. The police cars couldn't drive through the crowd, nor get past the fence without causing major property damage. So they probably drove to the streets.

Reak just ran, trying to get away from the police as best as possible. They didn't know about any strategies of the police, nor how they would track them, so they just relied on their bad stamina and their luck.

Curse the fact that they felt so hot.

The teen booked it onto another passageway that was currently under construction. Maybe it would help them get away.

Wait, no. That way only has two exits. One in and one out. If the police found out, they would most likely get captured!

Reak looked back, not having stopped running. They couldn't see anyone, but the risk of getting found when they started running back now was too high.

They would just hope that they wouldn't get discovered.

The police sirens grew louder and louder.

Were they already that close?
How much time till they find them?
Where to run?
How to get away?
Run.
Just run.
Hide.
Run and hide.

Reak was at the exit of the passageway, not seeing any cars yet. After swiftly getting to the other side of the construction warnings and fences, the teen ran further away.

Where were the police?
Did their luck help them for once?

Reak feeling a little bit relieved, ran a bit slower, the adrenaline slowly decreasing at the positive thoughts.

But the sudden and loud sirens of the nearby police reminded them that they weren't safe. The teen continued running for their life as they hoped the police did not see nor hear them.

They booked it into another street, running towards an undetermined destination. After all, how could they possibly think of a good place to run to with all the stress?

The 15-year-old looked at the trees ahead. It was the nearby forest they had been to a couple of times.

...

Of course! The forest!

Reak smiled at the thought of hiding away. They just needed to hide, after all!

Running, the teen smiled at the trees, that gave them hope. Maybe they could survive there. Maybe they could wait for things to cool down and then-

"THERE ARE TRAILS HERE!"

Reak's head shot back, something like bones cracking at the movement, which slightly hurt. They found them. They did. Now what? Hide? Run?

They felt so tired...

The teen ignored their bodily needs of rest and focused on getting to the nearby trees.

Only a little more and they would be safe!

The police wouldn't get to them and they would be safe and then they can wait and everything would be fine and the world would slowly fall into order again and they-

.
.
.

They made it.

Reak ran through the forest, the warm but windy weather not bothering them in the slightest tears of relief leaving their eyes. They were safe!

Now they could think of other matters-

Wait, were they safe?
The police could still find them.
They weren't safe.
They...

Reak sucked in a deep breath, temporarily steadying themselves on a nearby tree, to avoid falling over. Maybe even feinting.

They had to calm down. Calm down and understand the situation. Understand it and make sure to take the necessary measures.

Yeah..

Everything was fine..

Breathe...

The teen quietly walked through the forest. Or as quietly as they could with all the leaves and sticks on the ground, cracking and crumbling under their weight.

They looked back every few seconds, their anxiety not entirely gone from the ongoing game of hide and seek.

Reak walked.
And walked..
and walked...

Until they broke down in the middle of the woods, stress and panic exhausting their body in mere seconds.

They didn't know what was happening.
They didn't know why it was happening.
They didn't know how it was happening.

The teen silently cried cold tears of water, not giving their waterworks a break. This was not what they expected their Friday to be like. Neither was it what they wanted it to be like. This was not what it was supposed to be like.

They wanted to get home, tell their parents about their nice day at school, watch some TV, chat with people online and maybe practice some pieces they got that day on their beloved cello.

But this? How could this possibly be what they wanted?

The teen looked at their covered hands with teary eyes. Why did they wear something so different? Where did it come from?

So many questions and so few answers.

Did they suffer from some kind of extreme amnesia?

That would explain their crimes, that they had no memory of. It would explain all the confusion they felt. It would explain why they felt so weird. So different.

But it just didn't feel right.

Reak felt the urge to look under the mysterious gloves. It was like something was telling them that that would bring them answers.

The answers they seeked so much. The answers that would explain their situation. The answers that allow them to understand.

Slowly, the teen took off their left gray glove. It was a slow, almost painful process for them, as they shut their eyes to not see what was under it.

But, perhaps it was their absolutely normal skin?

There couldn't possibly be something else under those simple gloves.

Maybe it was just a wrong feeling in their gut?

Of course, it was! What else would it be?

Reak slowly opened their eyes again, looking at their hand. Or... not their hand.

The teen stared in wonder, confusion, and fear at the ice cold hand. The few sun rays were bent by the transparent, almost glassy hand.

Was that... ice?
Why was there hard and cold ice under their gloves?

And why could the ice move?
Why did it move the way they wanted their fingers to move?

Why was there frozen water and not their skin?

Reak looked at the ice, making out two little yellow lights. But, upon closer inspection, the light didn't come from the hand.

They were merely a reflection of something else.

"DID YOU SEE IT ANYWHERE?"

The confused and scared teen shot their head up, looking behind, searching for any signs of the police drawing closer to their direction, eyes scanning the nearby area. They didn't want to get caught.

Not yet.

Not ever.
