Hiddentale

AU where every monster has a dark secret, that is slowly discovered by the others. Sans is depressed, also an insomniac. Papyrus has schizophrenia, also plagued with anger issues. Undyne beats herself up, as in she doesn't believe in herself. Alyphys is similar, but crazy. Toriel is constantly alone, isolates herself even when she is in good company. Napstablook is himself kinda (SAD!) And Mettaton has childhood issues. The rest have similar problems, but I'll figure out who does what when I get there. Mostly dark and depressing. Oh and Frisk has multiple personality disorder. Kinda fitting.

Just to give you an idea of how things are, here's a character synopsis: Everyone seems to be dressed normally, put Sans looks depressed, Papyrus looks a little hectic, his eyes are always darting around, and usually explodes pretty fast. Undyne looks beat up, mentally and physically from trying to make herself feel better. Alphys looks terrible, even worse than Papyrus, always trembling. Toriel is dressed in rags with heavy bags around her eyes and is always lumbering. Mettaton looks fearful. ETC

"Good morning, Sans. How are you doing? Did you sleep well?" Papyrus asked from where he sat on the couch, looking over the back. Sans looked up with his usual heavy eyes and sighed, lowering his head again as he dropped down from the last step.

"No. I feel dead." His voice was low and heavy, but Papyrus ignored it.

"I know, I know.. No, but you can later.." Papyrus turned away, mumbling to himself in a distant tone. Sans' shoulders slumped and he shuffled to the kitchen, his slippers barely lifting from the carpet as they slid onto the tiled floor. His hands were limp in the pockets of his jacket, and there were dark rings beneath his eye sockets, from lack of sleep and distress.

He came to the fridge and opened it slowly, his jacket rustling as he grabbed the handle with a bony hand. A gust of cool air stirred onto him, but he barely noticed, staring blankly into the depths of the messy fridge, a pot of burnt spaghetti thrown onto the shelves angrily, glass lining the bottom of the fridge.

Instead of cleaning it up, Sans grabbed a bottle of ketchup from the door and drank it slowly, closing the door and turning away with his head tilt up as he chugged it. Lowering his hand, he sighed again, tears threatning to fill his eyes, but he wiped them away, mumbling something inintelligible as he slowly came to the couch, taking a seat next to Papyrus who was talking to himself still.

"No, I told you that I can't! How many time- Just go away! There's no reason for you!" He seemed to get angry with each passing second, but Sans stayed were he sat, his eyes locked on the TV. On it, a robot named Mettaton was broadcasting on a news network, his black hair glossy and erfect as it fell carefree onto his polished metal face. He was reporting a story about the discovery of a small infant child who had been found covered in the dust of their parents in a small house in the city.

The view flipped to a monster who was standing next to a jittery Froggit, a microphone held in its hand as it bent down to interview the creature.

"Ribbit Ribbit! (I as just hopping along on my lonesome, when a loud shriek filled the air.) Ribbit Croak Croak. (It scared me, so I decided to investigate, wondering if they were okay.) Ribbit Ribbit.. (And when I got there, I found that, that, little beast ripping apart its parents.) Ribbit-"

"I'm going out." Papyrus said through gritted teeth, his eyes vacant. Sans turned his attention to him and watched him get up and walk stiffly to the door, grabbing his keys as he opened it briskly.

"Don't kill yourself." He remarked to the shorter skeleton as he slammed the door behind him. Muffled yelling came from the other side as he once again fought with his inner demons before stomping off the porch.

Sans stared at the door a minute longer, engulfed in his own misery before polishing off the rest of his ketchup and dropping the empty plastic bottle on the end table. He reached for the remote across the pillows and turned off the TV, sinking into the pillows as he let his body relax. He felt his soul tremor in his chest, the blue heart a faint blue, with cracks lining the sides from his counless suicide attempts. He would try again later, he thought.

. . .

"Alphys? Are you in here?" Undyne called from the entrance of the lab, her body blocking the door from closing again. She had a bandage wrapped tightly around her midsection, and an arm in a sling. She wore casual clothes, a black tank top, a button up jacket around that, one arm empty, and tan pants that where tucked into her boots. Her hair was drawn back in a pony, and her bangs were mangled, probably from her last fight. An eye patch covered her left eye were a large scar stretched across her eyebrow, stretching past her hairline.

"Alphys!" She yelled again, the flippers that were her ears pulled back as she became more and more impatient, stepping past the threshold, her boots thudding lightly on the lab floor.

"Seriously nerd, where are you?" She mumbled under her breath, crinkling her nose at the pile of instant noodle packages and broken supplies that overflowed in the trash can. A foul smell arose from the heap, so Undyne turned her attention away, her eye catching on a flicker in the shadows. Most of the lights were out, either turned off or dead, and she had to squint to see into the blackness.

"Alphys?" She asked, before letting out a surprised shout as a creature dressed in a long lab coat sprang from the darkness and skittered past her to a large computer screen, twisting knobs and pushing buttons frantically. Undyne sighed, shaking her head, and came over to the monster, looking over her shoulder.

It was muttering something about a "DT extractor" and "them", and continued to flick switches, looking up with mangled grunts at the screen and back down. Undyne pulled her head back, a confused look on her face.

"I think you need to turn it on first, Al." She said, and the reptile's head whipped around swiftly, its eyes narrowing behind its filthy and cracked lenses.

"Huh? Oh, yes yes.. Why didn't I think of that? Stupid stupid STUPID!" She roared, smacking a clawed hand against the side of its head before slamming it against a large button, giving a gurgled kackle as the machine whirred to life.

"Now, what was it you needed?" Alphys asked, her head twitching slightly as she monitored the screen, a bunch of weird symbols and dashes jumbled onto it. Undyne turned her attention from trying to understand it to the strange scientist.

"My phone. I broke it last week and you said you would fix it?" She waited quietly as Alphys froze, her hands slowly cupping in front of her and wringing over each other shakily.

"Phone.. Phone.. Oh, you mean the frigymu?" She asked, looking intently at Undyne with a crazed look that sent a cold chill down Undyne's spine.

"Y-yeah.. the frigymu." She agreed, and Alphys smiled widly, scrambling off of her stool and scampering away once again.

Author: TOO BE CONTINUED.
