44: Two Runners and Ava
AVA's POV
Left foot forward, right foot forward. Running is just like walking only faster. Words of wisdom from Elizabeth who tried to inspire me. Crap, she had me walking with Sara until her foot started hurting. When she ran, I ran. Instead of running, I jogged. I don't think I would even call it jogging. Whatever you call it, it wasn't running. The worst part about all of this was Sara's Foot wasn't even hurting that much giving her an excuse to run more as she wanted to. After an hour, I couldn't take it and fell onto the dirt and sat down. Sara and Elizabeth kept running without care. Every time they passed by, my face could feel the zooming wind in my face. I couldn't even tell if her foot was hurting anymore. Daniel found himself sitting next to me.
"You're doing good," he told me.
"If you call jogging good," My hands pulled on a few pieces of grass.
"Don't worry, you'll get better."
About another hour later, the girls were ready to take a break and gulped on a heavy amount of water. Their shirts ended up drenched in water.
"Good job Sara," complimented Elizabeth. "You're on your way to becoming the next John Jerry."
She found herself laughing. "I doubt I'll be anything like John Jerry. That guy was a crazy fast runner. I remember when my dad would take me to a few of his track runs when he came to town. That guy could move."
Giving her another water bottle, she spoke. "You know, he's actually going to be in town this weekend." She faced me and Daniel. "You both should come. It would be a fun way to end Spring Break."
Daniel was more than happy to agree to that. Me on the other hand, I really wasn't thrilled with that idea. Why on Earth would anyone want to watch a bunch of professional runners run? Crap, most of the time this John guys ends up winning. What would make this time any different?"
"Who's down for lunch?" asked Elizabeth. "I know the perfect little place. I'll drive."
Within a moment's notice, we found ourselves in the car with me in the back with Daniel. Driving out of the parking lot, a question was on my mind. I had to ask.
"Elizabeth, why aren't you going to college?"
She sped like the wind with a soft laugh. "To be honest, I just rather not be in debt. It feels like everyone majors in something stupid, ends up graduating, and can only find a minimum wage job as they spend the next several years paying off loans they can't afford." There was a brief pause. "I know you and Sara are looking into community college, but even with community college, you end up transferring to a university after two years and find yourself in less debt. Don't get me wrong, I considered going to a couple of universities. I was even offered a couple of good scholarships, but I ended up losing it after I injured myself."
"What are you going to do after graduation?" asked Sara.
"I don't really know. And honestly don't care. I just want to enjoy life. Whatever happens, will happen. Hell, I'd be down to marry a rich dude and be a housewife. Not very feminist I know, but there's nothing wrong with being a simple housewife."
She kept speeding zooming through all the yellow lights right before they turned red.
"Let's say you marry someone who's not a guy," I began. Daniel gave me a weird look as if I were stupid. "And this person believes your thought process. What would you do?"
She found herself laughing as did Sara. Daniel just sat there wanting to laugh. "Well, I guess I would worry about that if it actually happened. Like I said, who knows what's actually going to happen? Heck, who knows what's going to happen in any of our lives? All I know is that life is a journey."
The rest of the car ride was quiet with Daniel giving me an apologetic look. We finally arrived at a restaurant. 'Doug's Health Place.' Walking in the building, the place wasn't all that pleasing to the eye. It was simply a boring restaurant. We all sat down with a waiter coming to us. Everyone except me ordered a veggie salad while I ordered a carb friendly sandwich.
"You come here often?" I asked.
"Not as much anymore. I used to come here a lot when I was in cross country. Those were the days." She sighed with a smile on her face.
Waiting for our food, Sara, Elizabeth, and Daniel found themselves in a discussion about their senior year. They discussed all the experiences they had, the teachers, the homework, and everything else you could want to discuss. I just sat there not sure how to add to the conversation. Elizabeth wasn't even that interesting. Why did everyone else at the table think she was interesting? Listening to the conversation, my eyes noticed Sara's Eyes which were lit up with a giant smile gossiping about a teacher. I couldn't help but notice that her eyes were amazing when she was happy. The darkening skin on her face was glowing. Something about her felt different. Maybe it really was all the running. And perhaps it was true that running makes you feel free. Did she feel free? Was it even a good thing if she felt free? What did that mean for me?
"Ava," called Daniel as he waved his hand in my face. I came back from my thinking to reality. "Are you not hungry? You haven't started on your sandwich."
Oh crap, he was right. While they had already started on their salad, my sandwich had yet to be touched. Honestly, I really wasn't hungry, but I ate anyway.
