39: Walk, Sara, Walk

Ever try doing squats? Crap, they're hard. Maybe if I was in better shape, they'd be easy. I'm not sure how Sara is able to pull it off with a broken foot. Crap, why was her physical therapist making her do them? At least she got to sit on a chair while she did them. Not kidding. She gets in squat mode while mostly on the chair and does her squat while coming back to the chair.

"You sure that's good for the foot?" I asked the physical therapist.

"Of course. A chair helps because she doesn't have to stand on it for a long period of time. The quick pressure helps. These squats are a sign that her foot is healing."

Well, I guess he's the doctor and not me. I continued to watch Sara do these squats. There were a couple of times she gave me a smile as did I. She did these for an entire hour.

"OK Sara, keep doing your exercises at home. And please make sure you practice your walking. Slowly apply pressure to it. I recommend using the track field at your school. Eventually, you'll be able to run."

Once the appointment was done, we were off, but where were we going?"

"Down for the lake?" I asked.

"No, let's go to school. I want to use the track field."

And I found myself driving back to the school. It's everyone's dream to come back to school for an hour or so after leaving it. Nevertheless, we were going back to school.

"How was the trip to the community college?" she asked. "Was it everything you dreamed it would be?" A smile captured her mouth leaving her to poke my arm.

I couldn't help but chuckle myself. "Oh you know, it was such an amazing experience. This is the school of my dreams."

"It's not that bad of a school though. I'm actually going there in the fall."

"Really? I guess we can take every class together" I joked.

"That would be awesome. By the way, did you ever come across Professor Snyder on your tour?"

"I honestly didn't pay much attention on the tour."

"That's too bad. You should've. Anyways from what I hear, Snyder has been there for over fifty years and looks like a pig. From what I hear, he talks mostly like a pig."

"What?" My hands wanted to be off the steering wheel. "Crap, it's like that episode of Seinfeld. Remember Kramer and the pigman?"

She burst out laughing. "I loved that episode. Kramer gets himself into the dumbest crap. I swear he's an idiot."

"To be honest, I think Kramer is pretty smart."

"There is no way that he's smart."

"What about that episode where he pretends he has a job and all the employees think he works there?" My eyes had a hard time staying on the road as they wanted to look at Sara with my heart racing and a finger pointing towards her. "You know how hard it is to get a job? It's pretty awesome that he was able to pretend he had one and have everyone fooled! Crap, I really should try that sometime."

Her eyes were rolled. "He ended up getting fired, but whatever."

With our Seinfeld discussion continuing, our drive to the school was rather quick. It was only a matter of time before we found ourselves on the track field. To her advantage, there were a couple of chairs on the field. She had me hold on to one and follow her.

"Alright, I'm going to step out of these crutches and walk for about ten seconds. I want you to bring the chair to me so I can sit down and do it over again."

That's exactly what I did. On that cold day in which I should've brought a jacket, she practiced walking. One step, two steps, three steps. Boom, on the chair. We did this for over two hours. At the end of it, she was worn out and found herself sitting on the bleachers. As we sat on the bleachers, Daniel showed up in his running clothes looking like he was ready to run a few miles on the field.

"Hey girls," he said as he put a bag on the bleachers. "Fancy seeing you here." His eyes went towards Sara. "Is your foot getting any better?"

"Yeah, it seems to be making a lot of progress. We just spent the last two hours practicing to walk on this field."

"Well good. It seems like it should be healed within a month. Just make sure you don't go hiking in the snow again," he joked.

We both smirked. "Yeah, I think I learned my lesson. Wouldn't be the first time I did something crazy though."

A thought popped into his head. "You know what? You should talk to Elizabeth Jay. She was in cross country and broke her ankle. To be honest, I think she could help you not only walk but run. Damn, you'd be an amazing runner like her."

Her face turned red. "I don't know. I don't think she would want to help me."

"Well think about it. You want to watch me run?"

We both agreed and watched him run. There wasn't much to see when running is as boring as golf. Crap, I think I'd rather play golf than run. Anyways, he was moving his feet like a madman and not once took a break running an entire mile. During that mile, Sara was cheering and rooting for him.

"Go, Daniel!"

It really wasn't that interesting. Or maybe it was. I guess it is pretty cool that he can run without stopping. My legs hurt just thinking about it. With the sun starting to set, Daniel finished his mile and walked back to where we were.

"Running is pretty simple when you get the hang of it" he chugged his water down.

For the next twenty minutes, Daniel sat with us while we partially looked at our phones.

"So Daniel" began Sara. "You ever watch Seinfeld?"

"A few times."

"Would you say Kramer is an idiot or a genius?"

Before he could answer, I gave him a look. He took that look to heart. "Kramer's Kramer."

Sara was able to pick up on the fact that I gave him a look and punched my arm.

"You cheater, you can't do that."

Punching her arm back I responded. "I can do whatever I want."
