#2: Breaking Big News

To say the least, it was an exciting day. Sure, I didn't know much about writing a novel, but I was just hired to write one with my team. How hard could it be? If I could endure four years of college, I could do anything. Getting in the car and speeding down the highway, I made a call.

"Hey babe, I got exciting news!"

"Really? Well, let's hear it."

A thought quickly crossed my mind. "You know, on second thought, why don't we meet at Espivo's tonight at seven for dinner?"

"Oh, you're going all fancy on me. I didn't realize you were made of so much money. If only you had taken me there on our first date."

I found myself laughing. "But it was a pretty fun first date. You can't deny that."

"True. Anyways, I have to go. I'll see you tonight. Love you."

"Alright babe, Love you too."

With that said, I hung up the phone. With a three-hour drive ahead of me, there would be just enough time to get home, change, freshen up, and get to Espivo's. That is until I saw a mall which gave me another thought. The whole process took an hour, but I found myself at a jewelry store inside the mall. With the money I didn't have, I found myself paying a lot for a ring. Oh well. At least we shared love. With the lost hour, I made it to Espivo's just in time looking my sharpest. The waiter led me to my seat where my girl was already waiting. Ok, maybe I was a few minutes late. But it didn't matter. There she was on her phone when she noticed that I had arrived. She put her phone away and stood up. In all my time dating her, she had never worn such a breathtaking red dress. Her soothing blonde hair in a ponytail, makeup so fine, it made her white semi tannish skin glow.

"Late as usual," she smiled rolling her eyes giving me a hug and a kiss.

We both sat down as our waiter handed us our menu.

"Tonight's special is the Spiced Crab with Special Sauce. Can I start you both with something to drink?" Without looking at our menu, we both ordered a glass of wine. "Very good. I'll be back in a moment."

"So, how was work?" I asked trying to start a conversation.

"Oh my gosh, it actually kind of sucked. You know I really hate my boss. She has no damn eye for fashion. In all honesty, I realized today that I work for the world's worst fashion magazine. You know, I really miss being an intern."

"So how does your boss not have an eye for fashion?"

"Lisa Bardelli has these new shoes that she just released for her clothing line. Of course, I understand she's never been a fan of Lisa Bardelli, but how can anyone not freakin' like these shoes? Honestly, she's biased."

"OK, who's Lisa Bardelli?" This was seriously the first time I was hearing of her. Sometimes my girlfriend likes things and people that nobody has ever heard of.

"Yeah, you probably would have never heard of her. She's an underground model."

"What do you mean an underground model?"

With a deep sigh, she did her best to respond. "She hasn't gone mainstream yet. Honestly, I rather not talk about that. Can we change the subject?" How was your day? Didn't you have something you wanted to tell me."

Before I had a chance to respond, our waiter returned with the wine and wanted to know if we were ready to order. We weren't. He'd be back in about five to ten minutes. All we needed was a minute as we realized we wanted the special. Thankfully, we were able to get back to the discussion.

"OK, I did have something I wanted to tell you." A smile took over my face. "I had a job interview today and was hired."

She choked on her wine. "Seriously? Where were you hired? This is big! Why didn't you tell me earlier you had an interview?"

"Calm down. Have you ever heard of Mid Mills Publishing Company?"

"I think so. I've read a lot Doug Piper when I was in high school. He was OK. My idiot friend Barb liked him a lot and was always letting me borrow the books."

"Well anyways, I'm actually going to be working with Piper and Howard Line to write the next great Young Adult Novel?"

She sat there in confusion for a moment. "Ok, so you're telling me you're going to be working with a bunch of authors to write a Young Adult Novel?" I nodded yes. "Liam, what the hell do you even know about the YA Genre?"

"What's there not to know? I've read all of John Green's Books and I've seen The Hunger Games."

Her hands found themselves rubbing her head. "Oh honey, you're an idiot. Just because you read The Fault in Our Stars doesn't make you an expert. Where the hell is this place anyway?"

Not wanting to respond to her question, I did my best to say it quickly with my eyes squinted. "Pacific City. About three hours away from here. I start on Monday."

Yeah, she was annoyed now. "Ok, so you're telling me that you accepted a job offer in which you're not qualified for, in a town three hours away from here, and you start in less than three days?"

My hand grabbed her hand as if that made things any better. "I guess so."

"What the hell babe?" Do you realize we have to move now? Do you expect me to quit my job? Did you honestly think any of these things through?"

"Ok, maybe I didn't think these things through. But hear me out on this. "I wrote ten short stories in college that ended up in the paper. You even said you liked them. Hell, that's how we met. Anyways, I have an old childhood friend that lives in Pacific City. I'm sure he'll be glad to take us in. He has a teenage sister that I'm sure you'll love. You'll be friends within a week. Now, didn't you say earlier you hated your job? If your boss is an idiot, she's an idiot. I can see you as your own boss. The way I see it, you have fifty thousand subscribers on YouTube. Make with it what you will, but there is money to be made with that."

All of what I said made a lot of sense to her. By the second, she had grown calm. It was the perfect moment. With every nervous tick in my body, I stood up and kneeled to the ground taking a box out of my pocket. She was freaking out and beginning to cry.

"Heather Peterson, will you do me the honor of marrying me and becoming Heather O' Malley?"

Losing any control she had, she screamed and jumped from the table. "Yes!" Oh my gosh! "Yes!" Her lips made their way to mine as we kissed.
