When the Sky is cleft asunder;

When the Stars are scattered;

When the Oceans are suffered to burst forth;

And when the Graves are turned upside down;

(Then) shall each soul know what it hath sent forward and (what it hath) kept back.

O man! What has seduced thee from thy Lord Most Beneficent?

Him Who created thee. Fashioned thee in due proportion, and gave thee a just bias;

In whatever Form He wills, does He put thee together.

Nay! but ye do reject Right and Judgment!

But verily over you (are appointed angels) to protect you,

Kind and honorable,- Writing down (your deeds):

They know (and understand) all that ye do.

As for the Righteous, they will be in bliss;

And the Wicked - they will be in the Fire,

Which they will enter on the Day of Judgment,

And they will not be able to keep away therefrom.

And what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?

Again, what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?

(It will be) the Day when no soul shall have power (to do) aught for another: For the command, that Day, will be (wholly) with Allah.

The major theme of this Surah is the Day of Judgement and the Judgement.

Rasool Allah SAWW is reported to have said, 'He who desires to see the Day of Judgment as though he is seeing it with his own eyes should recite Surah at-Takweer, Surah al-Infitaar and Surah al-Inshiqaq." [at-Tirmidhee]

In other words, these Surah offer a graphic, accurate and a realistic view of what that dreadful day will be like!

This Surah was revealed in Makkah and consists of nineteen verses. Let's divide it into four parts for purpose of study.

The first part, verse 1-5, is a graphic picture of the major upheavals in the universe and in nature on the Day of Judgement when the world as known to us will come to an end and the ultimate reality of Hereafter will begin.

The second part, verse 6-8, reproaches mankind for turning away from Allah and not showing gratitude towards HIM for countless favour and bounties HE has bestowed on them.

The third section, verse 9-12, addresses those who do not believe in the Last Day and informs mankind in general that Allah has set up angels over them who constantly watch and records their words and deeds.

The fourth and final section, verse 13-19, contrasts the happiness of the righteous in Jannah with the torment of the wicked in Jahannam.

The Surah ends with the assertion of Allah's Absolute Command on the Day of Judgement.
