Chapter Thirteen
Dennis hurriedly walked out of the hospitsl with tear filled eyes, he walked with a jog hoping to reach his car before he exploded and broke down.
He was so shakened up and angry, he was sad and disoriented. He reached his car and brought out his keys from his pocket with shaky hands. He brought the keys to the cars but his hand was shaking so much that the key fell from his hands.
He bent down to the interlocked ground and picked up the keys. He stood up and quickly opened the car sliding into the soft leather seat. He started the car and placed his head on the steering wheel and allowed his mind to wander.
How could Patricia do this? How could she do this to me? To us?. After all we've been through?. After so many years of praying and begging God for a child, our prayers were answered but she destroyed it. He thought bitterly
Tears started to stream down his face as Patricia's face flashed in his mind. He felt bitter and out of control of his emotions.
"Why! Why why?!...why me?" Dennis yelled as he repeatedly hit his head on the steering wheel making the horns blare.
"How can someone be so wicked and heartless? ...what did my poor innocent child do to deserve this?" Dennis bitterly cried as he thought about the many sleepless nights he spent praying for a child, the many times he took days off at work just to attend a church programme or visit the pastor for private prayers for the fruit of the womb.
And when finally his prayer had been answered Patricia wickedly took that chance from him. She snatched away the chance of them ever getting back together, the chance to hold their baby and mend their family all for reasons unknown to him.
He thought about all the times Patricia said she loved him and was happy to be with him. Did she like about it? Has she been deceiving him from the very beginning or did it start not long ago?
"When did she change so much? And why have I never noticed it?" He said out loud as he cried into his palms.
"Ahhh! I was so blinded by my love for her that I didn't notice anything strange about her, God I'm so stupid" He cried.
He sat in the car for about thirty minutes thinking about his life with Patricia. The more he thought about their happy past the more bitter tears streamed down his cheeks.
He felt so helpless and drained as he sat alone. He was engulfed in despair and self pity and with each tear that he she'd he felt his love for Patricia fading away a d getting replaced by hate.
Hate that ran so deep in his vain and slowly spread in his heart like a poison and blackened it.
As he sat in his silent car he cried for his lost child, for the time he wasted with Patricia and for his broken heart. He cried to God and even questioned him, for he doesn't know the reason why he was being given such a punishment when he never committed any evil against anyone.
He felt exhausted and knew he couldn't drive back to his house in this state so he dialed the number if the only person he knew could help him.
After three rings the owner picked up the call. "Hello."
"Could you please come to Lagoon hospital at bourdillon and pick me up?" Dennis said in a rough voice.
"Okay" Daniel replied without asking any questions.
Dennis was not surprised at all. His friend might actually like an immature brat sometimes but he was also very good in reading people's emotions and tone, maybe that was the reason why they were so close even though they were complete opposites of each other.
Thirty minutes later and Daniel parked his car in the hospitals parking lot.
He came down from the car along with his younger brother that was about nineteen years old.
Dennis saw them through the windows and quickly cleaned his face with his hankerchief, he tried to make his face look as neutral as possible as he opened the door just as they reached him.
"Good afternoon uncle Dennis" Destiny greeted Dennis.
"Afternoon Destiny, how are you?" Dennis replied.
"I'm fine."
"That's good and how is school?" Dennis asked.
"It's fine uncle."
"That's good"Dennis replied with a forced smile.
Daniel shook his head at his friends attempt to fake a smile. " Where's your car keys?" Daniel asked.
Dennis looked at him and pointed to the car.
"Good, destiny get into the car and follow us, I beg you in the name of God don't drive like you own the road." Daniel said as he dragged Dennis to his own car.
"Get in" that was all he said.
Throughout the drive back to Dennis's house he didn't utter a single word and neither did Dennis as he got lost in his head once more.
When they arrive he hit the horn button and when the gateman saw them he hurriedly opened the door for them.
Daniel parked the car and gently tapped Dennis on the shoulder. "We are here"
"Thanks" Dennis replied and got out of the car.
"Oga welcome oo" the gateman greeted with a smile.
"Thank you" Dennis replied and got into the house with Daniel right behind him.
He dropped his keys on the table by the door and made his way passed the living room.
"Make yourself at home, I'll go freshen up and then we will talk." Dennis said and continued walking without waiting for a reply.
Time Skip
Dennis came downstairs and his nose was immediately assaulted by the smell of spices and fish. He slowly made his way to the kitchen and to his surprise Daniel along with Flora were busy chatting as she continuously stirred what seems to be fish sauce in the pot as Daniel chopped vegetables beside the sink.
He watched as they made jokes and laughed about silly things as they worked together and felt a thug in his heart as a somewhat similar memory flashed before his eyes.
Flashback
It was a bright and sunny Saturday morning and Dennis was enjoying the full benefits of the weekend as he sat on the kitchen counter and watched as Patricia cut the ugu leaves that was to be used to prepare the vegetable soup that he asked her to prepare for him.
He felt bored watching her and wanted to tease her Abit as she dilligently did her work and expertly moved around the kitchen bring out all that she needed and setting them on the counter.
"Ah...what all these? Do you want to kill someone?" Dennis said
"What's what?" Patricia asked as she continued slicing the leaves.
"You are cutting the leaves the wrong way, those are too big. You need to cut them in smaller size and the Maggi is way too much! How can you add up to six in one pot of soup. Do you want my handsome self to die of diabetes or something like that?" Patricia stared at him with bored eyes as he ranted.
"Mr. Chef if you know how to cook so much why don't you do it yourself" Patricia said and left the vegetables.
"Now go! Chop chop" She said with a smirk on her face.
"Let me show you how it's done. Come and join class" He replied and started chopping the vegetables" Patricia's eyes widened as she saw how big he cut the vegetables.
"What is this?" Patricia laughed as she pointed at the vegetables.
"If this was how they cut the vegetables in all the soups you eat I'm sure you'll only be eating rice till you die." She said.
"You are just jealous cause I can do it better that you. Allow me to continue my work." He replied and got back to chopping.
Three minutes later he finished cutting the vegetable and moved to boilinhthe meat.
He poured three large cups of water in the pot containing the meat and chopped one large onion on it.
Patricia came and peeped into the pot . "Jesus! Is this one pool or river?" She exclaimed as she saw how big the Onion were and how they were swimming on one side of the pot while the oil he added was also on one side with the meat at the bottom.
"Are you boiling meat or making a concoction Mr. Chef?" Patricia asked before busting into fits of giggles.
"What's all this one sef? Come and cook your food since you clearly don't like proffessional help." Dennis huffed and stood to the side.
"How can someone not be able to boil ordinary meat? How did you survive in school?" Patricia asked.
"Mama put and girlfriends." He answered with a shrug.
"No wonder you were looking like someone who has aids when I saw you for the first time" she laughed.
"That's a big lie, I was healthy and looking so fresh when we met that you fell for me at first sight" He smirked.
"For your small mind." She rolled her eyes.
"nis... Dennis..... Dennis!" Daniel shouted.
Dennis visibly shook as he came out of his trance. "Yes?" He replied.
"We are done cooking. Come join us in the dinning room." Flora said with a smile as she walked passed him with a brown and golden food flask.
"Okay, thanks" he smiled softly.
Daniel walked up to him and whispered in his ear.
"We have alot to talk about." He nodded and followed Flora to the dinning table.
