The Girls
I like to imagine myself as a writer, my world the words I create. I've been dancing with the girls on my team for years, and it was no surprise when the team list was posted in the cafeteria that night.
Abigail Sayler:
That's me. I can't describe myself because I can not see myself through my own eyes. I can describe anybody else based off how I see them, and I know I have a good eye, but I can not read myself. I mean, I know that I'm exceptionally average with my medium height, pale skin, and dark brown hair, but I don't really know how other people see me. I come from California, and my little sister, Josie, who's nine, is attending our camp for the first time this summer.
Beatrice Croft:
That's Bea. She's been my roommate ever since my first summer here, coming from Maryland. Bea's eyes are always on fire, ready to ignite her flames. She is tough, her emotions are the last thing she will ever show, always putting others before herself. At the same time, she does not suffer fools gladly. Quick to fight, untrusting, and yet she's always been my closest friend here. When she dances, she is unstoppable. Hip-hop is by far her strongest style, but even in emotional pieces she always pulls through.
Anna Crevlin:
Anna is the third roommate, and she is the cutest and sweetest person I have ever met. Anna is from New York, and takes the occasional master class at Spotlight during the year. While Bea is sarcastic and reserved, Anna is kind and open. She is the sun, always bringing people up and brightening up the world. On stage, she can be strong, though. She is an actress and can fit absolutely any role; we tested it last summer when she had to play a killer. Anna is pure talent and the epitome of goodness, and everyone wants her on their team.
Tara Paelford:
Tara and her younger sister, McKenna, travel from Michigan every year. They've been coming longer than anyone else, and are undoubtedly the most talented dancers here. Tara is beautiful and radiates confidence on stage like no other, and then she's one of the most beautiful people to interact with in real life. She's the sort of girl that everyone wants to be; she's funny, incredibly pretty, smart, and so humble about all of this. She, Bea, and I were roommates my first two years, but then Tara got much closer with another girl, so now she's almost always down the hall, and we have Anna with us instead. Regardless, we're all still close.
Ramsey Denham:
Ramsey is Tara's best friend. She arrived our second summer, and the two of them instantly clicked— she's one of Tara's new roommates. Like Bea, Ramsey is a firecracker. She's always buzzing with excitement and can't sit still. She's quick-witted and wild, without any second thoughts before she acts. When we were thirteen, she partied with the older guys and got completely wasted. Last summer, she was the second girl our age to hook up at camp. She met Jordan, now her boyfriend. He's hot, just putting that out there. The two of them have lasted through the whole year, at least, they were still together last night. I mean, they live about four hours apart, so I guess that makes it easy to visit each other. Anyways, Ramsey has no limits or fears, meaning she can play absolutely any character. Her technique and flexibility isn't the best on the team by far, but her performance skills are absolutely incredible.
Noah Corley:
I don't know Noah as well as I do the rest of the team. She always roomed with different girls and barely spent time with us. Of course, we used to always be on a team with all the girls in our grade, and there were usually about thirty of us, so we always knew her. Now she's rooming with Tara and Ramsey, so I guess this means we'll learn her story. She took last summer off and dyed her hair, we didn't hear from her much. As far as we knew, she had stopped dancing entirely. Before that had happened, she was never a nice girl. She was loud with no filter, and had no problem speaking her mind. She was smart in the way she saw things; she picked up on everyone's signals and intentions, and she wasn't afraid to call anyone out for it either. She was the one to expose Ramsey for getting drunk, meanwhile exposing that she was at that party too. Ramsey could never get mad at her though. Noah was known to not be able to keep a secret, but as far as I know, nobody had ever trusted her with one. She was brash, and confident, and intimidating, but I can't help feel bad for her. She is the mystery on our team.
Courtney O'Quinn:
There are three of these girls on our team— the arrogant bitches who crave nothing but attention and praise. To me, Courtney is their leader, the alpha. I've never gotten the sense that she cared about anyone else, except maybe her friends. She was always obnoxious in class, but still favored by every teacher; it's reasonable that I've come to despise her so. At the same time, she is gorgeous, which only makes me hate her more. The guys love her, and she loves the guys back. She flaunts her popularity like it's all that matters in the world. Of course, to make my bias stronger, she goes to my school. While my interactions with everyone at camp are solely at camp, I've known her since first grade. Even in first grade I didn't like her. And our parents are friends, which makes it all the more awkward. I'll be honest, she is talented, especially since she doesn't dance outside of camp. And yes, I know that I'm biased, but my friends can't stand her either so I promise I'm not delusional.
Presley Forman:
She is one of Courtney's best friends. I genuinely don't know much about her. She's a cheerleader and comes from one of the most stereotypical families I can imagine. She has two little sisters, both of whom dance at Spotlight. All three of them are blonde with perfect hair and perfect features. One of her sisters is known to be the best dancer here in 9th grade. Presley's not the smartest girl I've ever met, but she gets along. We've only danced together in one or two group routines over the years, even though she's been here for at least four summers. She's nicer than Courtney, but she might just be faker. I can't tell. Her dancing isn't the strongest, but neither are the other girls in her dorm. We're expected to be ranked the highest team, so that kind of surprises me that they chose to put her dorm here. Maybe she'll pull through.
Bekah Huntington:
The third of the popular trio. She is the reason that her dorm is on our team. She's good. And her parents own the studio so that helps. She's not just riding on that privilege, she's talented. She's nice too, so that's a bonus. Bekah's life is about as stereotypical as Presley's. She, too, is blonde with two little talented blonde sisters. One of them is best friends with Presley's sister. Other than being talented though, and really freaking beautiful, Bekah's not that interesting. She's the quietest of her friends, and honestly has no discernible personality. She and her boyfriend, Chris, have been together since they were fourteen. Honestly, that remarkable. They met at Spotlight, taking classes during the school year. The rumor is that they're finally going to be allowed to compete a duet together this summer. It's rare that they mix boys and girls during camp, but hey— when your parents run the system, they let things slide.
Logan Kostiner:
Logan is the youngest in our grade. She skipped first grade, and so she's still fifteen. Honestly though, if she wasn't constantly making jokes about that, nobody would ever know. She is tall, beautiful, and incredibly talented at everything she does. This girl can dance like a dream, and then she can sing and act as well. Her dream is Broadway, and she's the sort of girl who can definitely make it. She's also one of the only dancers here that is primarily a tapper, but she can pull off any style. Besides her incredible talent, Logan is so kind and open to everyone, that I almost forget she's part of Courtney's group. She doesn't room with them, but she's their fourth. And she's the reason I have any faith that they aren't awful people. I trust Logan, and if she thinks her friends are good, then I try my hardest to believe her. It's hard to believe her.
Hayden Gates and Carter Beck:
Hayden and Carter are best friends that are practically inseparable. They room with Logan, and she's really the only one who can distinctly hang out with them without feeling like a third wheel. They're both relatively quiet; I've danced with them both many times. While they definitely have great technique and talent, neither of them are distinctly memorable as dancers. I almost feel bad for them because they're younger sisters are held to such a high standard here. Hayden and Carter are technically a part of Courtney's group as well, but they aren't really. They keep to themselves for the most part.
