Chapter 7
"Hey, Bud!" Dad hollered on the phone. "How's school going?"
"It's okay," I replied. "I mean, Mark moved away, Sophie died, and Mom's attitude isn't helping out."
"Ah, I'm sorry, Keith," he said. "Did you meet any new friends, at least?"
"I mean...." I trailed off.
"Ooooohhhh," he teased, "Did you get a girlfriend, or something?"
"DAD!" I shouted, "No! She's just a fr- acquaintance."
"Sure, kid, sure. But, I can't talk much, gotta get to work. Love you!"
"Bye," I said, a bit harsh.
I ended the call, and I flopped onto my bed. I stared at the blank ceiling and thought about the year so far. Right now, I feel like my family is just being destroyed, I met this energetic girl, and we see each other in every single class! It got annoying at times.
I then heard giggles coming from outside, so I got up and looked out the window. Speak of the devil, there she is.
"The one and only Kylie," she finished, while jumping from branch to branch, "She is on a mission to find the missing kite within the trees that was a gift from her long forgotten parents."
Sheesh, she knew how to make something sound like it's a literal casualty.
"She scavenges the maze of greens and light yellows, as she ju- Oh! And she soon finds a hint of blue. For there is no possible way for there to be a blue leaf!"
I decided to open the window and sit on my little sort of roof thing. I made myself comfortable as I watched Kylie jump from branch to branch. She made climbing trees look like so much fun, but in reality, it gets pretty boring.
I decided to get down from my pedestal, and I jumped down. I leaned against one of the trees, and I saw the kite she was trying to get. It was blue, red, yellow, and green. Wow, the only thing that gives it away, is the fact that it has that blue on it.
I looked at Kylie, and she was smiling.
"She is so close to her target. The wondrous Kylie reaches out for the item, when she realizes the g- Keith?"
I looked at her and rolled my eyes.
"I didn't know you lived near here."
"Actually, I live pretty close," I said, "Why are you so determined to get that one stupid kite?"
"It's not stupid," she said, harshly. "It's something special to me, FYI."
"Alright, fine. Just get your kite. I'll just be out here for a bit."
"Oh, that's perfect then!" she said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Kylie reached for the kite, and she pushed it down towards me. It flew around as it descended into my hands. I studied the flying thing, and I saw these notes on the colors. In the order of yellow, green, red, and blue, I read them.
When you feel happy, rise this kite high in the sky. When you're feeling jealous of others, make the kite fly in figure 8's. When you get raged up, pull and tug at the strings, making the kite fly your anger to the skies. When you're sad that we're gone from this planet forever, fly this kite that we all made together from the trees. We'll be waiting for you in the other life, our little angel.
-Dad and Mom
What? This note didn't make any sense at all.
"Keith?" I got interrupted, "Are you reading the notes?"
"What?" I said, "Uh... no. I was just thinking to myself. I didn't even notice the notes."
"Can I have my kite back, by any chance?"
"S-sure."
I handed her the kite and took a brief glance at the notes. They still didn't make any sense, but at the same time, I wondered what they meant, and why her parents would put that on a kite. I guess that there's not enough answers for everything.
