Chapter 5

After school, I met Kylie at the Hiero-Tree. The Hiero-Tree was that tree with the weird marks on it that I was talking skit earlier. Most of the kids at school think someone from past history made the marks, while some think that some psycho went mad and took their anger out in a tree. It's probably why the marks looked like someone was angry while making them.

Anyways, I looked at my black camera. It was the last thing Dad gave to me before leaving to Boston. I wish that I could hold on to his true self rather than what a picture showed. I looked back into the camera's memory and switched through the pictures of Dad, Mom, me and Mark, even my first day at the high school.

I then came to one of my pictures, and I realized something about the background. It was a picture of me and Mark, but in the background was a girl, holding a photo album. The girl looked like she was looking through some sad moments. I zoomed in, to the girl's face, and I realized it was Kylie.

"Hey, Keith!" I heard, "Sheesh, I thought you ditched out on the project."

It was Kylie.

"What?" I said, switching the camera's settings, "Not a damn cha-"

"Keith!" she interrupted. "What did I say about swearing!" She out her hands on her hips and gave a sharp sigh. "Gosh, you don't listen. And you were on such a good streak too!"

I rolled my eyes.

"So, what do you want to shoot within the corridors?"

"Mmm, just about anything we can get. Like I said, the petal would be nice to film."

"Got it. So, where should we start?"

Kylie looked up into the sky and smiled. I looked up as well, and I was amazed. Pink, blue, yellow, and green petals filled the air. I quickly got my camera out and filmed them all falling.

"Hey, Keith," Kylie asked.

I looked at her, as she was still looking at the petals. The thing that was different was that she had tears in her eyes. I turned off the recording and walked towards her. When I was right in front of her, she looked to me. Her eyes were glassy and crystallized.

"I'm sorry," she said, wiping her eyes. "I'm just remembering something."

I took her wrist, and she looked up at me. Kylie's eyes went towards my hand holding her small wrist.

"Uh, Keith," she said. "Why are you holding my wrist?"

I realized what I was doing, and I quickly let go of my grasp. I shook my head and reviewed the footage I got. I gotta admit, Kylie was right; the petals did look pretty at this time of the day.

"Let's get some footage of the tree corridors," I said. "I'm pretty sure there's some stuff that I didn't know about that's there."

Kylie gave me a huge smile, and we headed towards the tree house.

We entered the main opening. It was just a few stairs carved into a huge tree trunk.  Gotta admit it, Kylie's dad and grandpa are awesome. I got my camera out and started to record the inside. I did a slow 360 around the area, to show off the designs that Kylie said she made.

There were carvings of flowers, small birds, and even hearts along the walls. We then came up to the suspension bridge that made it's way to the tree house. I recorded that as well as it led to more secrets.

There was another corridor that led further up. Kylie signaled me to follow her as I held the camera and recorded what I thought was good. More carvings went up the walls as the sunlight shone at the exit. I then realized that we were on a platform that was above the trees.

I recorded the overview of the forest as the leaves gleamed green with the light. The trees looked like they're dancing, to be honest. I recorded Kylie leaning over the railing as she was admiring the beauty. She smiled and signaled me to follow her again.

We went through all these corridors that I've never seen, and we've went through just about most of the forest before coming back to the Hiero-Tree.

As I was putting my camera away, I glanced up to the falling petals. I saw that Kylie was feeling the marks on the Hiero-Tree. As her hand went over the lightning bolt marking, she smiled. It wasn't a usual bright smile though. It was more like a sad one. I walked up to her and tapped her shoulder.

"Hey, Kylie?" I said, "You okay?"

She looked at me and smirked. Oh God, what is she going to do. If she does a smirk, then I have a feeling that she's going to tease me in some way. She went right in front of my face, and I felt heat rise into my cheeks. Ugh, hate it when this happens.

"What happened to your face?" she giggled, "What? Have a girl problem?"

"I-I-I, uh," I stuttered.

"Do you like someone?" Okay, I was super red now.

"What? What does that have to do with anything?"

Kylie shrugged.

"Just an idea for why you're blushing. I mean, I don't even have a crush. At least I know another teen doesn't have one as well."

I shook my head and took my camera case.

"You gonna edit this stuff once I send it to you?" I said.

"You got it!"

I smiled and left the forest as the petals fell from the trees once more.
