PART TWO; Getting His Attention

"You see him, right?" You said, sitting down across from Miguel at a local outdoor café.

You and Miguel were now officially undercover. He was wearing a dark blue long sleeved compression shirt, black jeans and a black baseball cap. His hair was tucked under the hat, but it still spiked out.

You had to prevent yourself from staring at the muscles that his shirt did great favors for. You also had to prevent yourself from ogling at the way the golden hour sun was hitting Miguel's face, revealing freckles that couldn't have been seen otherwise.

Ayodele, your target, was sitting at a table about ten feet behind you. He was scrolling on his phone, sipping from some kind of ridiculously sugared drink with way too much whipped cream.

"Si, I see him," Miguel said, sipping on his black coffee. "Remind me what we're doing here? Why don't we just go get him already?"

You would never let him know, but you had seen him dump an ungodly amount of sugar into that coffee after receiving his order from the barista. He drinks the black coffee to look serious and broody, but you knew at his heart he was the opposite.

"We have to prove that he's actually murdering couples," You explained "Right now, he's only under suspicion. You and I are here to act as bait."

Despite having gone on several undercover missions before, Miguel never got a hang of the idea of being inconspicuous. He was staring directly at Ayodele, and had been for the past two minutes.

Trying not to make a scene, you slid your hand up the arm not holding his coffee and squeezed lightly to force his attention on you.

"Stop staring – you'll attract his attention," You scolded, now rubbing your thumb against his arm. If Ayodele noticed Miguel staring, you now had to go overboard on the PDA to make him believe your cover.

Miguel's eyes widened slightly as he glanced down at your arm. He cleared his throat, avoiding eye contact.

"Don't we want his attention?" Miguel snipped back, earning a disapproving glare from you.

"Not that kind of attention," You sighed. "We need to act more like a couple; right now, you're as stiff as a board. It looks like we're on a really bad first date."

Miguel rolled his eyes. "Lo que. I'll hold your hand," – he grabbed your hand, moving it away from his forearm – "better?"

After about 10 minutes of Miguel and you overdoing the PDA and being couple-y, Miguel's eyes snapped behind you.

"He's on the move,"

You both began to follow behind Ayodele. Your target began moving towards a less-populated area as you and Miguel kept a decent distance behind him. You two continued to hold hands as you tailed Ayodele.

It had been going so well. Ayodele had no idea he was being tailed and you two had been doing perfect acting as a couple.

That was until Miguel's yellowish-orange watch began to beep rapidly and make strange noises. In a panic, he swiftly pulled you into a nearby alley just as Ayodele turned around.

"What are you doing?!" You whisper yelled as Miguel fiddled with his watch to try and turn the noises off. You peeked back out to the street only to spot Ayodele walking towards you both.

Miguel finally got the beeping under control, but it was too late – Ayodele was already close.

"Ay coño, hold on to me, I'm going to get us out of here," Miguel said, grabbing onto your waist.

"Wait!!!" You said, a better idea popping into your head. You glanced outside the alley again, seeing you only had a few seconds before you would be found. You quickly yanked Miguel's hat off and discarded it on the ground.

"Trust me, okay? I'll explain later."

Miguel nodded, a confused look on his face. Right before Ayodele looked into the alley, you pulled his lips to meet yours.

Miguel reacted quickly, pushing you against the wall and grabbing the back of your head. Both of your lips moved in sync as your hands moved up his chest. The hand on the back of your head wove itself into your hair and lightly pulled. The slight tinge of pain made you moan against Miguel's mouth.

"Dios mío," Miguel muttered, moving his hands to the backs of your knees.

"Jump."

Using the momentum of the jump, Miguel lifted your legs to wrap against his hips. He continued to push you against the wall with both hands wrapped around your upper thighs, just inches from your backside. Your hands roamed his torso, one weaving itself into his hair. He began kissing your neck, nipping just below your jawline.

As you two continued to make out, you both heard a camera shutter from just outside the alley. The noise was quickly followed by footsteps that gradually got quieter.

"Is he gone?" You asked, fighting back whimpers and moans.

Miguel began to slow his kisses. With a sigh, he replied, "yes."

He slowly set you back down, but your hands remained on him. Both of his rested on both sides of your head against the wall.

You both were panting, trying to regain your breaths. Both of your lips were swollen, cheeks were flushed and hair was no longer neatly styled.

Miguel muttered something in Spanish that you couldn't quite catch and looked at you, expecting you to say something.

Your mind was spinning and your eyes were glued to Miguel's chest. Your entire body grew hot as the nerves spread to your fingertips. You looked up slightly, meeting his gaze.

Back away, now. The voice in your head said, remembering that this was just for a mission. You need to keep this professional, at least until the mission ends. Stay focused.

You avoided his eye contact as you ducked under his arm and pulled out your phone. You began dialing your sergeant to give her an update.

Before calling, you turned around and glanced at Miguel. He was still facing the wall, but one of his arms had dropped and his hand had become a fist. You couldn't see his face.

Turning back around, you hit the call button and told your sergeant what had happened. You left out the last five minutes, but you told her about Ayodele taking a photo of you two before walking away.

She gave you instructions and you hung up. You turned back to Miguel – he was fiddling with his watch, not paying attention to you. He seemed to have recovered – his face was back to its normal neutrality.

"That was too close," You said, trying to shake off what just happened. "Let's head to the cover apartment the department provided. The 'lease' is under our names, so Ayodele should be able to find us there."

Miguel only nodded, following you to the apartment.

The fact that someone is reading this reminded me that I actually have to write for this story, it can't just be something I've outlined in my head. Oopsie!

Side note; don't ever write an entire 1200 word chapter in one sitting when recovering from carsickness. It is a harrowing experience.

Now that we're at the half-way point, tell me what you guys think! I absolutely despise ghost readers, so tell me what you think and what I can improve on. I value your feedback.

Plus, your comments & votes & library adds remind me to actually write the next chapter.
