The Desire for Normalcy

Sophia Bennett sat at the dinner table in her family’s opulent Washington D.C. home, pushing her food around her plate with distracted movements. Her mind was occupied with her impending transition to university life.

“Mom, Dad,” she began, her tone resolute, “I’ve decided I want to attend Princeton University this fall. But I have one condition—I need to experience it like any other student. No bodyguards.”

Vice President William Bennett looked up from his plate, concern etched on his face. “Sophia, this is a significant decision. There are real risks involved. We can’t just let you go without some form of protection.”

Eleanor Bennett, ever the mediator, reached out to touch her husband’s arm. “William, maybe this is exactly what Sophia needs. She’s grown up under constant scrutiny. Allowing her some normalcy might be beneficial.”

William sighed, his gaze thoughtful. “I understand where you’re coming from, Sophia, but your safety is our priority. We have to be cautious.”

Sophia’s eyes were earnest. “I’m not asking for much. Just a chance to live like a regular student. I promise I’ll be responsible.”

Eleanor gave her husband a reassuring look. “Perhaps this is an opportunity for Sophia to gain some independence. We should support her decision.”

After a moment’s consideration, William nodded reluctantly. “Alright, we’ll arrange it. But there will be some measures in place to ensure your safety.”

Sophia’s excitement was tinged with confusion. “What kind of measures?”

William responded, his expression serious but gentle. “We’ll arrange for someone to keep an eye on you, but they’ll be integrated into your university life. They’ll appear as just another student, so you won’t be aware of their presence.”

Sophia sighed, accepting the compromise. “As long as they don’t interfere with my experience, that’s fine.”

Eleanor squeezed her daughter’s hand, offering a comforting smile. “We’ll make sure they respect your privacy.”

Weeks later, as Sophia arrived at Princeton University, she was met with a whirlwind of new faces and experiences. Among them was Ethan Collins, a friendly and approachable student who seemed to fit in effortlessly. What Sophia didn’t know was that Ethan had been carefully chosen and enrolled by her father to serve as an undercover bodyguard. His role was to blend in, befriend Sophia, and keep a watchful eye on her without revealing his true purpose. As Ethan began his mission, the lines between duty and genuine friendship started to blur, setting the stage for an intricate and unexpected journey.
